Copeland was second in the ACC 6th Man of the Year and was expected to play a key role for next year’s Syracuse squad. We’ve heard rumors for a while that this was going to happen, but it’ll be interesting to see where Copeland ends up as schools ramp up their NIL offers to grab transfers. With Taylor and Copeland departing, Adrian Autry now has an open scholarship for next season and until things get clearer, it’s a bit hard to speculate on need. It does seem like a center might not be the top priority for the off-season....but who knows what’s next.

Good luck Quadir, we’ll always have this shot

Taylor played out of position at power forward for the Orange thanks in large part to Williams’ off-court issues. The 6’6” Taylor started every game for Syracuse and averaged 5 points and 4 rebounds. His shooting never came around in his second season as he hit 35.2% from the field and only 30.1% from 3. Despite the offensive struggles, the coaching staff praised Taylor’s work ethic and preparation as the wing player was often forced to defend much bigger interior players.

It’s no surprise that Taylor will look to leave Syracuse as his treatment by many fans was pretty harsh. While he certainly was hesitant to shoot this year, booing a player at home during starting line-up introductions is ridiculous.

Right now, the Orange will have enough scholarships for their incoming recruiting class and as we wait to hear who else will be departing, we’ll evaluate the needs for the 24-25 squad. With Donnie Freeman and Elijah Moore coming in, plus the return of Chance Westry, Syracuse appears to be deep at the wing positions, so Taylor’s departure for more playing time (and a more welcoming environment) is understandable.

Good luck to Justin in his next home....unless it’s Virginia or Virginia Tech because we’re supposed to be the only #disloyalidiots around here.

No MSG, No Orange

The Syracuse Orange (20-12, 11-9) seemed to be a safe bet to be selected to the 2024 National Invitational Tournament, so it seemed a bit odd when the Orange didn’t appear in the 32-team field.

We had heard from Adrian Autry last week that the Orange would accept. As soon as the NCAA Selection had wrapped, we heard that Memphis, Indiana, St. John’s and Pitt were going to decline.

Had Syracuse released a statement like this prior to the NIT Selection Show, it would have been clearer what was happening.

It was a long season for the rotation players, so if they got back from DC and collectively determined that they were finished for the year, that’s fine. We know there are departures coming, but it doesn’t make sense that Syracuse needed to decline because the transfer portal opens today.

The portal officially opens meaning schools can contact players who enter. Do you think that schools in the NCAA Tournament won’t be in touch with those players? Do you think that schools haven’t been in touch with AAU coaches or athlete representatives throughout the season? We should be accustomed to this new normal in the portal era- especially what we saw in football where there were transfers who committed to Syracuse before they visited campus.

Right now, Syracuse has had one official departure in Benny Williams. That means one more player will need to be leaving in order for the Orange to have the scholarships for both Donnie Freeman and Elijah Moore. If Syracuse does open up more room, we’ll look at what the roster needs and those players who would potentially fit.

After a lot of conference tournament chaos, any hopes you had that the Syracuse men would find their way into the final at-large spots is gone. Will NC State’s ACC Tournament win just knock out a fellow ACC school from the bubble? It’s going to be an interesting selection show because of all those bid stealers and you can tune in tonight at p.m. ET to CBS to find out the final brackets (and prepare for the upcoming TNIAAM Bracket Challenge). The selection show will also stream on Paramount +.

The Orange women will hear their names called during the women’s selection show which begins at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN, and streams on ESPN+. Felisha Legette Jack’s squad is projected to be a 5 seed when the brackets are revealed.
New York State's Number 1 prospect commits to SU.

When Fran Brown was hired to lead the Syracuse Orange, one of the first things he did after arriving in Salt City was head to the Dome for the New York State high school football championships.

That included watching Christian Brothers' Academy, who capped off a perfect 14-0 season by winning the Class AA title game. One of the prospects he saw that night was two-way star Darien Williams, and now three months later, the local star announced he is staying local for college by joining the Orange:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every program that offered and took an interest in me. After much prayer, conversations with my family, my pastor, and my coaches I have decided to commit my academic and athletic collegiate career to Syracuse University.
— Darien (@darienwilliamss) March 16, 2024

Williams, who is both a wide receiver and defensive back for the Brothers, is rated as the Number 1 recruit in the entire state of New York. He had 44 catches, including 11 touchdown grabs, for a hair under 900 receiving yards in his junior year at CBA.

I saw Darien make some impressive plays on both sides of the ball during CBA'S Section III regional against Cicero-North - more than enough to confidently say the 6', 160 lbs. prospect can turn on the jets like crazy. Regardless of which side he eventually settles on, Williams should make a big impact for SU down the road.

Williams is the third commit so far in the Class of 2025; Javon Lawrence, another New Yorker, also verbally committed this weekend.

Take a look at what makes Williams New York's Finest:
