Thank you, NunesMagicians... Thoughts From the Bomb Shelter

You know me. I've posted from time-to-time. I lived in Atlanta, sat in the front row of the Georgia Tech tire fire, and occasionally offered insights into my life as an Orange student back in the good ol' days between 2002 and 2005.

Sometimes life takes a giant left turn. Last Spring, my wife was offered a post-doctoral fellowship at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I was told that the lab is one of the most prestigious in the world. This was a career-changer. So in June we packed up the kids and moved to Israel.

Convenient timing. When we arrived is about when the rockets started flying over the country. I'm not going to discuss politics, religion, or religious politics. But I will say that living in a place where you have to be near a bomb shelter at all times can rattle even the strongest of us. You worry for your family and children, both for their physical and psychological well-being.

Part of living here is constantly keeping an eye on the news. All we think about, talk about, and hear about is the "Situation" (matzav in Hebrew). How many rockets came today? Was that a rocket being shot down over my neighborhood or a back-firing truck? Why didn't the siren sound? Do I know the family whose house was destroyed? Are the rumors of quiet true? Day and night, we "refresh" the news websites for up to the second information on what's going on around us.

And that's why I want to thank you guys. The one distraction I have is Syracuse sports. No matter how crappy the news is here, I can hop over to my favorite website and catch up on the latest goings-on and laugh a little bit. It's a huge reprieve. The staff writers, the fans posting, and Sean... you've meant so much to me these last few weeks.

I know we think that all we're doing here is talking about sports. But to some people it's so much more. Come hell or high water, I will hack into ESPN3 and watch every Syracuse game that's broadcast. The 7 hour time difference won't stop me either. Because Syracuse sports are a part of my soul. Otto lives on my bookshelf. My kids love him. The Orange(men) bring me joy even in the worst circumstances.

So let's have a great season cheering on our boys to victory!

Go Orange! And כתום קדימה!!!!
