since LeBron recently brought up the topic in the NBA, there has been a lot of discussion (especially on NY sports talk radio) about the Mt. Rushmore in various sports. Over drinks with some SU buddies (and 1 St. Johns alum) over the weekend, the topic of SU's version(s) came up.
There was a general consensus that Melo, Pearl and the Honorable Mayor Bing are all "no brainers". There was a debate about Coach Jimmy. He is admittedly the face of the franchise, but should all 4 spots go to players? If so, DC1 probably outranks the likes of Moten, Sherm, GMac and Wallace. That said, our final decision was Roosevelt....just because his 'fro would look great carved in stone.
The first three of Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis were also unanimous. Again, the coach discussion (Schwartzwalder) came up. If just players, we couldn't decide on a 4th. Among those discussed were Mackey, Ringo, Donovon, McPherson, Csonka, and Monk.
If we did a non-sport specific Mt. Rushmore (to be constructed 44 stories high on the site of the water tower in Thornden Park) we all agreed that Jim Brown, Jim Boeheim and Gary Gait get carved in. Again, we couldn't decide on a 4th so maybe it should be Otto.
