Syracuse fans as a whole are insecure and have an inferiority complex when comparing ourselves to Duke. Only one coach has more wins all-time than Coach Boeheim and that’s Coach K. We only have one national championship, Duke has 4. Syracuse fans feels unlucky; maybe if things had gone differently, we might have at least 3. (Keith Smart, the Fab Melo suspension, Arinze Onuaku tearing his quad etc.)
When we look at Duke, we see what we aspire to be, as far as the success that the Blue Devils have had. Syracuse fans WANT the respect that Duke has as a basketball school, and the last few years things have been heading in that direction; but they’re not there yet. One of the ways we can earn that respect is by playing (and beating) the best.
And that’s what Duke is.
And that’s why this game is so important to us fans. It’s for validation; to prove that we belong in the conversation as one of the elite basketball teams in the country.
That’s why 35,446 people are going to be in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night.
That’s why we want to BEAT DUKE.
