Returning Starters on Football Schedule

I think continuity is very important to college football success. When you're dealing with 19, 20, 21 year old players, their comfort level playing with their teammates & in the same scheme are major factors in the success of that program. To that end, college football writer Phil Steele compiled a chart of how many starters each FBS school would have returning for the 2014 season. Based upon the chart, Central Michigan is tied for first with 19 starters returning. Maryland is tied for sixth with 17 starters returning. Now, both of those programs struggled last year, but with that many returning starters, each program may be poised to be much better in 2014. Syracuse, by the way, is tied 26th (and tied for 1st in the ACC) with 15 starters returning. Here's a link to the chart: http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2014/JAN14/DBJan23.html

Of Syracuse's opponent's next year, here is each team's number of returning starters next year:

Villanova: N/A (Only FBS teams listed)

Central Michigan: 19

Maryland: 17

Notre Dame: 11 (although this list doesn't count Everett Golson as a returning starter because last year's starter, Tommy Rees graduated; also lost offensive & defensive coordinators to other programs)

Louisville: 13 (also completely changed coaching staff)

Florida State: 13

Wake Forest: 10 (also completely changed coaching staff)

Clemson: 12

NC State: 15

Duke: 14

Pitt: 14

BC: 10

Based upon these numbers, the Central Michigan and Maryland games might not be as easy as initially expected. But I think the Louisville game won't be as hard as a lot of other people do because we're playing them earlier in the season with a new QB & new coaching staff with completely different offensive and defensive schemes. Also, while the BC game is in Chestnut Hill, they won't have QB Chase Rettig or Heisman candidate Andre Williams, so that game should be easier than it was this year. All in all, I think the program can take a step forward with a seven or eight win season and hopefully their 4 bowl win in five 7 years.
