Syracuse on SUnday 2013 (Week 1)

Syracuse on SUnday is back for the 2013 season with 12 former Orange on NFL rosters (down from 14 in Week 1 of 2012) plus 2 head coaches with the addition of Doug Marrone to the Buffalo Bills.

Since this is the 1st Week of the regular season I've included players that didn't make final roster spots.

Baltimore Ravens - Arthur Jones (DE) & Jameel McClain (ILB)

Buffalo Bills - Doug Marrone (Head Coach)

Houston Texans - Alec Lemon (WR)

New England Patriots - Steve Gregory (S) & Chandler Jones (DE)

Pittsburgh Steelers - Shamarko Thomas (S)

San Diego Chargers - Dwight Freeney (OLB)

Chicago Bears - Tony Fiammetta (FB)

New York Giants - Tom Coughlin (Head Coach), Ryan Nassib (QB) & Justin Pugh (OT)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Mike Williams (WR)

Washington Redskins - Tanard Jackson (FS)*

Tony Fiammetta (Chicago Bears) - Started & recorded no stats in win vs. Cincinnati. (It’s good to see Fiammetta back on the field after he walked away from football last year as a member of the Patriots due a unknown family issue &/or a suspected concussion)

Ryan Nassib (New York Giants) - Inactive in loss @ Dallas.

Justin Pugh (New York Giants) - Started & recorded no stats in loss @ Dallas. (Pugh started his first career game for the Giants at RT & became only the 2nd Rookie O-lineman to ever start right away under Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin)

Mike Williams (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) - Started & recorded 4 catches on 8 targets (long of 17 yds) for 52 yds & 1-TD in a loss @ NY Jets. (Williams also had 1 false start penalty & went down with what looked like a possible knee injury but returned to the game which is good news for the Bucs who in July gave Williams a 5-yr extension on his rookie deal meaning a six-year, $40.25 million contract, including $15 million guaranteed. Not too bad for a guy who never graduated college.)

Dwight Freeney (San Diego Chargers) - Started & recorded 1 assisted tackle, 1/2 sack & 3 QB-hits in a loss vs. Houston on Monday Night Football. (After playing 11 years for the Colts, it's strange to see Freeney wearing a different uniform.)

Steve Gregory (New England Patriots) - Started & recorded 9 tackles (7 solo) & had 1 pass deflection in win @ Buffalo.

Arthur Jones (Baltimore Ravens) - Inactive in loss @ Denver on Thursday. (Jones missed the Raven’s season opener due to an "undisclosed illness" which turned out to be a "viral infection near his heart" & could be cleared soon to return to practice.)

Chandler Jones (New England Patriots) - Started & recorded 6 tackles (4 solo, 1 for loss) & had 1 QB-hit in win @ Buffalo.

Shamarko Thomas (Pittsburgh Steelers) - Recorded 2 solo tackles in loss vs. Tennessee. (Thomas played mostly special teams including an offensive holding call during a punt return.)

Alec Lemon (Houston Texans) - Place on IR on 8/27

Jameel McClain (Baltimore Ravens) - Placed on the PUP list on 8/27 due to his on-going recovery from last season’s spin cord contusion. (McClain agreed to a pay cut changing his 2013 salary from $3 million to $1.5 million.)

Tom Coughlin (New York Giants) - Coughlin & the Giants opened with a loss @ Dallas & did not use any Coaches Challenges during the game.(Doing what some people thought the Bills were going to do, the Giants drafted the top 2 SU prospects giving them the most former Orange on any roster if you count Coughlin.)

Doug Marrone (Buffalo Bills) - Marrone started his NFL career with a possible upset of the New England Patriots only to fall in the end 23-21. Marrone also wasted no time throwing his first NFL challenge flag on the 3rd play of the game on what looked like a possible Patriots fumble. The ruling on the field was upheld & Marrone is now 0-1 in challenges as well as an 0-1 record. (As we all know Marrone jumped ship to the NFL after last season’s Pinstripe Bowl victory over West Virginia. Despite having a few former Orange players during the preseason none made the 53-man roster.)

Tanard Jackson (Washington Redskins) - Jackson was able to apply for reinstatement on August 31 since he was suspended indefinitely last year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Will Allen - ? Can’t really find anything about Will Allen who was on IR with the Patriots last season, my guess is that at age 35 we won’t be hearing from him again.

Donovan McNabb - McNabb has finally made his retirement official on June 29th after not playing a game since 2011 when he was in Minnesota. The Eagles will retire his #5 on September 19th when Andy Reid & the Kansas City Chiefs are in Philadelphia. McNabb can now be found on the Fox Sports 1 show "Fox Sports Live" with Gary Payton, Andy Roddick & Gabe Kapler.

Quinn Ojinnaka - While Ojinnaka hasn’t officially retired from football, but he has now become a professional wrestler (photo link).

Curtis Brinkley (RB) - Waived by Chicago on 8/26

Delone Carter (RB) - Traded from Indianapolis to Baltimore on 8/21, cut by the Ravens on 8/30

Zack Chibane (G) - Waived by Buffalo on 8/31

Ryan Durand (G) - Waived by Kansas City on 8/26

Doug Hogue (LB) - Waived by Carolina on 8/31

Nick Provo (TE) - Waived by Buffalo on 8/31

Marcus Sales (WR) - Waived by Atlanta on 8/26

Andrew Tiller (G) - Waived by New Orleans on 8/31
