funding football through grassroots donors?

I've been thinking about this for a while now, particularly after reading the article comparing SU future 17million facilities upgrade with Oregon's 68 million insanity.

As far as I know, Syracuse can't see to find our version of Phil Knight to pony up a cool billion, but there are a fair amount of fans out there, alumni or no, and I bet some of them are even employed. Has any ever seriously considered some type of grassroots funding program a la what the democrats did in 2008? I'm not saying such a program could raise 68 billion, but I'd be interested to see what we could accomplish.
