SU Hoops at Madison Square Garden throughout history

Jim O'Connor-US PRESSWIRE

This is an incomplete but rather intensive effort to chronicle the success and history of SU Hoops at the Garden. Using info collected from multiple sources (with a big shout out to OrangeUpdate.com where much of the info was culled) I've found data on 99 Syracuse appearances at the World's most famous arena. These include regular season St. John's games back to 1990 only (I know there are games pre '90 that I've missed, but after 3+ hours and finding fewer and fewer sources for info I called it a night), various pre-season tournaments (Preseason NIT/NIT Tip-Off, Coaches vs Cancer, Jimmy V Classic) and of course BE tournament games (those I have all the way back to the inception of the MSG tourney run in 1983).

The Google spreadsheet I created to log the data is here. A summary of the data is below.

Over the 99 games I logged, Syracuse's record was 60-39. Our biggest margin of victory was a 35 point drubbing of Texas Tech on 11/17/2005 in the NIT Tip-Off Semis. Our most memorable win is the 6OT thriller against Connecticut in the 2009 BE Quarterfinals. Perhaps our most enjoyable win was a 102-78 beat-down of Bob Knight's Indiana Hoosiers on 11/30/88 (less than eight months after Keith fucking Smart) in the Preseason NIT Semis. At the time this was the most points ever allowed by a Bob Knight coached team. That record would stand for two days until North Carolina got a hold of the Hoosiers in the Consolation game...

Given that Jim Boeheim has coached over 99 college basketball games at the Garden (plus a certain handful of regular season St. John's games from 1981 to 1990), that means that he has more HC appearances there than Norm Roberts (102), Mike Jarvis (83), Brain Mahoney (78), or Fran Fraschilla (59) had conference games (home and away) as head coach at St. John's... Sweet Lou Carnesecca coached the Johnnie's for 219 Big East conference games, so his MSG total is probably (take roughly half the conference games to get to 110) just higher than Coach Boeheim's...

I suppose this is just another way to say that JAB has been around a long time, but I found it fairly interesting, and only moderately maddening to uncover.
