Per FBSSchedules.com, we're now one of two FBS teams needing another game, the other being Western Kentucky. There had been a lot of FBS options a month or so ago (i.e. NMSU, Idaho, Hawaii) but no more. WKU was a middle of the pack Sun Belt team last year in what was one of that league's best years. Besides getting waxed in Tuscaloosa all of their losses were by single points. And of course they've added Bobby Petrino as coach. If we're looking for a guaranteed gimme game, I'm not really sure the Hilltoppers would be it, though seeing their mascot and Otto in the same place plus heckling Petrino would be quite a delight.
FBSS has a rumor that we've been negotiating with Old Dominion, who was very good in FCS last year and is moving up to FBS. As we saw with Stony Brook last year, these upper echelon FCS teams aren't as easy as they seem, and we were pretty fortunate to not turn out like Pitt. ODU has some pretty gaudy offensive number, putting up scores like 57, 45, 70, 64, 45, 53, 41 and 63 in 13 games.
Isn't Savannah State begging everyone to get their ass kicked for cash? Get 'em on the phone, Doc! With Penn State and at Northwestern on our schedule, plus Clemson and FSU in conference, this last NC game really needs to be a virtual guarantee.
