Since we had certain people calling him Greg Robinson 2.0 after last weekends derpfest. I'll concede that there was zero reason for this game to even be close, let alone needing a TD with 6 seconds left to take the lead. Some of that was derpy play calling on the part of Shafer and McDonald. If I watched this game again on my DVR right now, I'd probably come down from the high of this win because of how stupid some parts of it were. Now that his first regular season has come to a close in such exciting fashion, let's look at what our first year leader has been dealing with-
-He's a first year coach.
-He had a first year QB under center that had some of the worst accuracy in the country for a stretch of about five games.
-He had a squad that lost a ton of talent to pro ball over the winter.
-He had what was arguably the most injured team in the ACC.
-He's pretty much had no kicker.
-His schedule was littered with teams who boast speed that we haven't had to deal with in past seasons.
-While facing said schedule with a ton of speed, the players in his secondary are so slow they were outrun by Chase Fucking Rettig for about 75 yards.
Now lets look at some other things:
-Scott Shafer's first season as HC is the second most succesful debut season Syracuse has had since the end of World War II behind Pasqualoni, who's first year team could have been coached by a cardboard cutout of Coach Mac to 10 wins.
-His first season is head and shoulders more successful than the first seasons of Ben Schwartzwalder, Dick MacPherson, Doug Marrone and, of course, He Who Shall Not Be Named that SMFS has managed to be compared to over the course of this season.
-His first year just saw his team finish third (!!!) in the ACC's Atlantic Division behind Top 10 teams Florida State and Clemson.
If Shafer doesn't mature as a coach over the next year or two, we're not going very far with him as our Head Coach. He deserves a ton of blame for the Pitt loss and the lack of preparation for Georgia Tech was embarrassing. Even with the win tonight, we'd all kill to have the Penn State and Pitt games back. And the "hard nosed" talk while pretending penalties don't matter is an insult to the intelligence of our fans (granted, they aren't very intelligent). And no one here is pretending that, at 6-6, this squad is as good as
Alabama Florida State.
BUT, how about we actually sit back and watch him deliver on that maturation, and enjoy what has been a rather successful first year as our skipper. And after tonight, don't stay at home and tell me his team doesn't give you a good product in exciting football.
