Stiff challenge for the Orange this weekend- and got me to thinking , short of devine intervention, what was an outcome Cuse fans could live with. Post Georgia Tech, I'm feeling a little better 'bout the Orange, mainly on D,, and would love to think they could, at least for a while, lay a little "northern style football on the noles, and perhaps do better than the 56-0 pounding they received in Atlanta.
And this got me thinking about the past.
1991 is one of my best SU football memories. After years in SYR, I had moved to California, but came back that fall to see SU hammer Florida and f***ing smug Steve Spurrier in the Dome. A few weeks later, had a chance to go to Tallahasee, and we watched SU take on Florida State. This was a good Cuse team, with I think less talent discrepancy then than now vs FSU, but they were still huge underdogs.
They scored on the second play of the game, and after FSU tied it, Qadry (the missile!) Ismael returned the kickoff for a TD. FSU would regain the lead, but late in the 2nd quarter, SU marched down the field. So there we were, trailing 17-14 to one of the top teams in the country, marching for a touchdown,in hostile territory. It was awesome, we felt at the center of the football universe! We thought, what if ????Unfortunately, in the second half, it went south quickly. The Noles would go on to win 46-14.
But I loved those moments- and my hope for the 2013 Orange, who are are developing and growing stronger each week under coach Shafer, is to give us a few of those moments Saturday. I want them to kick the s*** out of those 'Noles Saturday, but short of that, give me that same moment, when I can look around and say, hey, look what's happening here, um , we can do this.
FSU would go on to win 46-14. SU would go on to
