A lot of frustration has come to the surface after the loss to Minnesota. Poor play calling, penalties, and mistakes have become the norm. I still see people labeling Marrone's recruiting as fine, good, or acceptable. Looking at the Rivals recruiting rankings over the past decade or so paints a different picture:
Class Year - Rivals Rank - Coach
2013 - #76 - Marrone (in progress)
2012 - #65 - Marrone
2011 - #75 - Marrone
2010 - #78 - Marrone
2009 - #117 - Robinson/Marrone (hopeless, do not blame HCDM for this one)
2008 - #48 - Robinson
2007 - #48 - Robinson
2006 - #52 - Robinson
2005 - #56 - Pasqualoni/Robinson
2004 - #50 - Pasqualoni
2003 - #53 - Pasqualoni
2002 - #44 - Pasqualoni
You always have to take recruiting rankings with a grain of salt; however, according to these rankings, Robinson recruited on par with Coach P, while Marrone's average class ranking is about 20-25 spots behind our previous two coaches. I'd say he has done much more with the players he's brought to campus, but it looks as though the caliber of players has decreased.
I cannot decide what to do with HCDM. I love the passion he brought to the program right away, but now I don't see that, he reminds me of Art Shell on the sidelines. I do think that Hackett needs to go now, and obviously we need to go in a different direction in regards to special teams. It makes me wonder what our situation would be if Marrone was working with the top 50-55 type classes of GERG and P.
