Before the Syracuse Orange's 28-17 win over Stony Brook, Doug Marrone announced that Steve Rene was going to take on more duty on punt returns and kick returns, much to the confusion of many Orange fans. With Jeremiah Kobena out, Marrone looked at Rene to give us a boost on kick returns, even though the numbers didn't seem to back it up. Rene didn't do much before leaving the game with an injury. Turns out, that Dreaded Upper Body Injury will keep him out this weekend against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
So who's going to return kicks for SU?
Sophomore safety Ritchy Desir returned two punts fir 17 yards vs. the Seawolves after Rene went down, and junior tailback Prince-Tyson Gulley handled kickoffs, a duty he held as a true freshman. That noted, true freshman cornerback Wayne Morgan, who returned kickoffs in high school and has already burned his redshirt playing mostly on special teams, fielded several kicks today at practice and could also be an option.
Meanwhile, cornerback Brandon Reddish has been MIA from practice for the past two days. No official word from SU. Reddish had an interception in the fourth quarter against the S'Wolves and there was no apparent injury that anyone could see.
That obviously leaves Ri'Shard Anderson and Keon Lyn but could mean that Wayne Morgan and Julian Whigham will see some serious playing time. Hmm...
