Since I am not a regular in posting you may take this with a grain of salt, but I think that its a valid question to ask when looking at FCS competition....so here we go.
With the recent talk about how Syracuse should have remembered who they are and put the proverbial boot to Stony Brook’s throat and trampled over them I think that we might have to look at the competition of FCS teams now. Since 2007 38 times has a FCS team upset a FBS team. 14 of them have been wins over teams from the BCS conferences, most notably Appalachian St over #5 Michigan in 2007 and James Madison over #13 Va Tech in 2010. While I do believe that Syracuse could have beaten Stony Brook by more, I think that we also have to take into consideration the maturation of competition between FCS and FBS schools. I think that it’s a lot like when it was a big deal that mid majors would upset the big conference schools in basketball, now we have almost come to expect it. Call it a blind love for Syracuse sports but looking at the Stony Brook game I think Syracuse came up against a quality opponent and played an OK game due to mental errors that need to and I do believe will be fixed before the Minnesota game. I have full confidence that this team will be 5-2 going into the game against USF. Below is the list of BCS conference teams that have lost to FCS schools in the past 6 years.
2007
Appalachian State beats #5 Michigan
North Dakota State beats Minnesota
Northern Iowa beats Iowa State
2008
No notable upsets
2009
William and Marry beats Virginia
Richmond beats Duke
2010
North Dakota State beats Kansas
Jacksonville State beats Ole Miss
James Madison beats #13 Virginia Tech
2011
Richmond beats Duke
Sacramento State beats Oregon State
North Dakota State beats Minnesota
2012
Youngstown State beats Pittsburgh
Sacramento State beats Colorado
Oh and thank goodness that Syracuse hasn't been one of those teams above....
