I'm sure that by now, everyone knows the situation with Lance Thomas at Duke. Assuming that back in the day someone did pay him a lot of money, for whatever reason, chances are pretty good the NCAA will rule him retroactively ineligible, thus revoking 35 of Coach K's 927 wins, including Duke's 2010 national championship.
Ok... so what, you ask? Well, 927 minus 35 equals 892. That's how many wins Coach K will officially have if it is ruled Thomas was ineligible. Coach Boeheim currently has 890 wins. Suddenly, there's a realistic possibility of Boeheim catching or even surpassing Coach K. After this season, barring the implosions of their respective teams, both coaches will pass Bob Knight on the all-time Division I wins list. There's no reason to think Boeheim can't/won't pass Coach K at some point, and perhaps even retire as the all-time winningest D-I basketball coach. Wouldn't that be something to add fuel to a potential Duke-Syracuse rivalry, as well?
