Too Many Bowls?

One my favorite things to keep track of in college football is the number of bowls vs. the number of bowl eligible teams. Last year came real close to having more bowls than bowl eligible teams. However, this year, could finally be the year where a 5-7 Syracuse or 5-7 Notre Dame type team will play in some obscure, far-flung location, before Christmas. Apparently, with all of the NCAA bowl bans and self-imposed bans (see, Miami) there could likely be more bowls than bowl eligible teams this winter. The common-sense solution would just be to cancel one (or more) bowls b/c there is no qualifying team. Of course, that will never happen with all the money and sponsors wrapped up in this charade.

Instead, there will be even greater mediocrity this winter when a 5-7 team plays a 6-6 team.I can't wait for the bowl committees and NCAA to fall all over themselves trying to convince fans that a 5-7 Vandy team "deserves" to play in a bowl.
