A Comeback for "Clothesline" Cater?

Stay connected for news and updates

Back in the fall of 2010, I recall seeing a young man take the field in SU's football game versus Maine. He had put in some time that year on special teams, and was finally given some minutes at middle linebacker in the final quarter of the game, where Syracuse was already well ahead.

Over seven downs, it was as if someone had allowed TNT in an SU uniform onto the field, so explosive were the hits. That young man, Malcolm Cater, was quickly dubbed "Clothesline" for his crushing take-down attack on Maine's opposing QBs

Sure, you can say - that was an FCS team already beaten, and he was fresh vs Maine's fatigued. Say what you will, you cant take away the fact that the kid came to Syracuse ready to play and make an impact. In seven downs, he recorded two tackles for a loss with Dan Vaughn and two sacks for a loss. The first one left the first string quarterback without his helmet, and on his back, and had to be walked off the field stumbling. The next down, he repeated it for a 9 yard loss on their backup, taking him out for 1 down, the Maine coach probably seeing himself losing two QBs right after one another, and put in his 3rd stringer for the next play.

Malcolm Cater had come to Syracuse and he came ready to tear heads off opposing offenses, and a replacement spot for outgoing Derrell Smith was all but locked up.

Fast forward one year, and Malcolm Cater is off the team, charged with burglary of his own teammates (his QB no less), and is going to shock camp for a year in lieu of 1-3 years in the big house. Another player gone, and a 4 star talent from Riverhead NY down the drain. We learn Malcolm had a rough past, and had overcome a lot of adversity before he even set foot on the field for SU. We sigh, and we move on.

And here we are today, Malcolm has served his time, and is looking to come back to Syracuse, his athletic body has been kept trimmed from months of forced personal training, and being in shock camp has further enforced in him the mistakes he knew he made.

So, if Malcolm Cater can get back into Syracuse University, should Malcolm Cater be allowed to suit up in Orange?
