The SU women's lacrosse team wasn't the only one with a flair for the dramatics today. SU lost to Arizona St. 3-1 before surviving the double elimination by beating Long Beach State 2-1 later in the evening. The Orange are now 42-15 overall.
The Cuse scored quickly against Arizona St. Lisaira Daniels scored off of a Stephanie Watts single to left field that gave SU a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Unfortunately, SU bats were pretty quiet after that as they managed only two hits for the entire game. Arizona St. could manage one good inning, but it was enough for the victory. The Sun Devils had a big 3-run bottom of the 4th rally that gave them the win. Jenna Caira got the loss with 6 innings pitched.
Long Beach St. earned the right to face the Orange again with a 5-4 9 inning victory over a pesky LIU Brooklyn team in the 1st elimination game.
Once again, SU drew first blood in the top of the 1st when Veronica Grant scored off of a Julie Wambold double to center. It remained 1-0 SU until Karli Sandoval hit a home run to right center in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game.
Caira took over from Stacey Kuwik in the 6th inning with the game still tied. Outside of the lone home run, both pitchers were reliable as the 49ers managed only two hits for the entire game.
Leadoff hitter Jasmine Watson cracked the stalemate in the top of the 8th with a left field blast that put the Orange up 2-1. The 49ers couldn't do anything in the bottom half of the inning and SU survived to play on Sunday. Jenna Caira got the win for the Cuse.
The Orange will play Arizona St. at 6pm (EST) on Sunday. If they lose, they're done. If they win, then they will play the Sun Devils again at 9pm to decide the Regional winner.
This is the furthest that SU has ever gotten in the Regionals/NCAA Softball Tournament. Last year, they were eliminated by LSU in the second elimination game.
