Syracuse Defeats Georgetown: Quotant Quoatables

The Syracuse Orange defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 64-61 on Wednesday. Here are the quotes to prove it.

Jim Boeheim, on the great job his team did:

"This was a disaster game as far as I am concerned. This is very disappointing at this stage of the year."

Jim Boeheim, on how well the team is rebounding:

There is just no excuse the way we are rebounding right now. It’s a team effort; it’s everybody, it’s not one guy. Right now, I don’t think we’re a good basketball team because we can’t rebound.

Jim Boeheim, on how he knew Kris Joseph was primed for a big night:

Well, yesterday was the first day that I can remember in a long time that he made some shots in practice.

Boeheim, comparing Fab Melo to Rick Jackson:

"I’d say he’s [Fab Melo] just a little bit better shot blocker. Not as good of a rebounder but a better shot blocker."

John Thompson III on whether or not he was disappointed:

"Yes, it's disappointing."

Star-divide

Kris Joseph on the clutch three to seal the victory:

"There were three options: Scoop (Jardine), Dion (Waiters) or myself. For some reason, they left me open. I was open and I just got it to fall. I was ready for it and it fell."

Kris, on what it means to beat G'town tonight:

It’s the last game I’ll ever play against Georgetown, assuming we don’t play them in the Big East Tournament," Kris Joseph said. "So it was good. I feel like I came out on top in this rivalry."

Kris, on who motivated him to keep shooting and break out of his slump:

My teammates told me to keep shooting them. My coaching staff told me to keep shooting them. My mom told me to keep shooting them (laughs).

Scoop Jardine, on the feeling inside the locker room after the game:

"We’re not pleased with ourselves. We can be better. We can rebound better. We’re not making shots. But I know one thing: We’re all happy with the win. We got a big win against a tough Georgetown team and Coach broke a record. So, he’s happy . . . for the most part."

Dion Waiters on the battle to make Boeheim happy:

"I don’t know what we gotta do to make Coach happy, but we’re satisfied with the win. That’s Coach, man. We got a great win tonight. It was a battle."

C.J. Fair on the rebounding issues:

I don't know how to pinpoint it. Sometimes we were just out of position looking for shooters. Depending on how you they go off rebounds, you might be going against 2-3 guys. It is a zone. There can be a lot of people in the area. For me if I'm not rebounding, he (Boeheim) will take me out to make sure I'm rebounding."

Brandon Triche on why he didn't play at the end of the game:

"I have no clue, honestly. I'm disappointed. But whatever it takes to win. Coach has been doing it a long time. 880 wins. He obviously knows what he is doing. And we got a win."

Jim Boeheim, summing up Scoop Jardine:

"He’s really the only point guard that gets us into plays and gets us into sets and makes plays. He’s going to make a bad play every once in a while, but he makes good plays. You need that. We need him doing that.’’

Fab Melo, on how watching tape on Rick Jackson has helped him:

"I watched Rick’s films the whole year. I got his videos when I went to China. He’s great at getting into position. He knows where he has to be in zone. That’s how I learned how to play."

Melo on the Brazilian flag that some fans brought to the game:

"I saw that. That’s very nice."

Jim B on Scoop
“He’s really the only point guard that gets us into plays and gets us into sets and makes plays. He’s going to make a bad play every once in a while, but he makes good plays. You need that. We need him doing that.’’

I see where Jim B is coming from. Yeah, Triche was playing decent ball last night and is less prone to dumb mistakes. But he’s also more robotic, for lack of a better word. My HS coach always used to tell us to not be robots; don’t just run the set play as its designed, make plays based on what the defense gives you. That’s what Scoop brings that Triche doesn’t. Triche runs the play and goes with what is designed to happen. Scoop runs the play and finishes it based on how the defense reacts, not on how the play is “supposed” to go. At this point in the season, when there’s a gang of film for opponents to study, you need to have that creativity in your offense. Especially for a team that struggles in the half court like Syracuse does. So, yeah, Scoop had 4 TO, but he also had 8 ast. You’d be hard pressed to find any coach who’s upset with a 2:1 ast/TO ratio. I’ve been saying this for a long time. Scoop is a playmaker. Whether its taking a shot, making a pass, whatever, he makes plays. Mistakes happen. They’re bound to with a guy who handles the ball as much as he does. But his play is a net positive 90% of the time and he’s the best guy for the job at the moment.

I think the JB reaction

Is him knowing this team could be Final Four, but they are just not executing like they want it. Any other year he looks more relieved after a win like this. But G’town (and teams before this) exposed some problems with SU. I think a main problem is how easily they had things until that ND game. They just didn’t do the little things for a full 40 minutes. Now they are starting to see what happens when you don’t play all 40 minutes against top teams.

And that fluke ND loss starts to look a lot different now that they are 8-3 in conference. They are probably the only threat to a #1 BE seed right now.

very tough schedule ahead

Coach needs to get them believing they are vulnerable and not supermen or we WILL lose some coming down the stretch…

Agree 100%

They look at UConn as 2 easy wins, which is a huge mistake. With or without Calhoun, they have great players and they know how to break down the zone. For UConn, Syracuse is the ticket back to being an NCAA lock. Of course, two against Louisville is not going to be a picnic either. This is that stretch where we see how good this team’s chances really are.

by orangetundra on Feb 9, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know

If UCONN can break down the Zone, they don’t work as a cohesive group.

by fatmofo55 on Feb 9, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

If you watch UConn, you can see how much they've struggled with zones

And it hasn’t really gotten better over the course of the season.

Still, you have to think they’ll come in fired up after the pathetic performance they had at Louisville. Much like we were to Louisville two years ago, we are their ticket to the tourney. They don’t really have resume building games left, either.

by cuse2012 on Feb 9, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

This is why I agree with the national pundits

Who say that Cuse needs to play a tougher schedule early. It is a joke. Who cares if we only have one loss if we don’t get enough practice against quality opponents. I really don’t understand the extreme that Boeheim takes on this. To me it is a flaw of his style.

by W.A.Wilson on Feb 9, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Its ok to agree with them

but I still think Jim Boeheim knows a lot more about coaching than you, and them.

Our SOS is 14.

Our RPI is 1. We played Florida, Marshall, Virginia Tech, Stanford, NC State and Bucknell. Two of those teams are having “down years” for their programs. All of them are top 100 RPI. The remainder of our schedule (conference, which we have no say over) consists entirely of top 100 RPI teams with the exception of Providence, Depaul, Rutgers and St. John’s. Given how far out games get scheduled there’s only so much you can do.
Looking at Duke (SOS 2), they played Michigan St., Michigan, Kansas, Ohio St., Colorado St. and Temple. Three of those teams (M. St., C St., Temple) are similar caliber teams on a year-to-year basis as many of the non-conference teams we scheduled. Plus you have to look at who will play you, where they will play you, and what neutral site tournaments you get invited to. The whole “Boeheim doesn’t schedule anyone” is pretty tired, and generally has been bogus for some time. (Duke also scheduled Belmont, Presbyterian, Tennessee, NC-Greensboro, Western Michigan and Penn.)

I'm getting ready to change my birthplace to Syracuse.

by Seadog on Feb 9, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Plus

Who of us had any idea UConn, Pitt and Louisville would both be so terrible this year? That’s four games right there. Marshall was getting as much praise as Memphis coming into the year, we didn’t have any choice who we played in the Preseason NIT or the SEC/BE Challenge, etc. So many teams have burnt out playing a tough NC schedule followed by the BE schedule, it isn’t worth it to say “well maybe everyone will have a down year in conference that we need more games against Kansas and Kentucky”.

Our SOS is pretty damn high. There are very few teams out there with the big marquee wins people are demanding that we have. It baffles me how many people say we don’t have any big wins and rank UNC, who has less good wins than we do, ahead of us because of that. Kentucky has Kansas and UNC, neither on the road, and then 22 wins against average to mediocre teams. We can go on and on.

Yeah, before those teams hit the skids a bit

our SOS was in the top 5 all season.

pretty sure that argument is dead.

Boeheim Should just play 10 on 5 in practice

With the 10 on Offense and 5 on defense, and make the 5 rebound. If they don’t get the rebound they run.

by fatmofo55 on Feb 9, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions

I respectfully DISAGREE with the HOF'er.

Yes, Scoop is more creative, but frankly, Triche should’ve gotten more end-game PT.
What was Dion doing so great that BT had to sit for the last what, 5-7 minutes or so?
I understand Scoop as lead guard, but Brandon was playing well, & he’s more of an outside threat than Dion, IMO. I also think he would’ve made a “better” play than that 30ft heave in regulation.

by VerbalKint on Feb 9, 2012 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Completely agree

Scoop and Brandon should have gotten at least a few minutes together. Maybe he mouthed off – doesn’t seem his style, though – or Boeheim didn’t like his effort earlier in the game or something, who knows. As long as it’s not a lingering issue.

It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

by Girardi Party on Feb 9, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I'll agree here

Dion didn’t do much either, so I’m at a loss as to why he got the crunch time minutes and Triche didn’t. The only thing I can think of is the same thing we keep coming back to in regards to Triche. He tends to shy away from big moments. Yeah, he may have played all around better for the game. But in that situation you need players on the court that are at least going to try to make a play. Most of the time in that situation, Triche hesitates, or gets caught up thinking rather than just playing. Much like Scoop, Dion at least is willing to try to make a play. Now, of course, the decision to launch that three at the end of regulation instead of making the extra pass to KJ was dumb and selfish. Quintessential “old Dion”. But you’d be hard pressed to make me believe that Triche would have been any better in those 3 seconds that Dion is. Triche is more likely to pass. But he’s also more likely to hesitate that split second that turns a wide open KJ into a steal by a closing Hoya.

Could be

Scoop has more upside than Triche. He just also has more downside.

I cant be the only one to see Triche' reaction after Joseph made the game winner...

he stood there emotionless, then went to the slow clap you see at some golf event. The guy sitting next to boeheim who keeps track of the stats showed more emotion, as well as the cop sitting behind the bench.

You keep chanting one more year, I thought college was four years

by PointBlankPeriodPeriod on Feb 9, 2012 1:53 PM EST reply actions

Triche

rarely shows emotion anyway. I’m sure he was happy for the team, but probably conflicted since he wasn’t in. Especially the way they executed down the stretch I don’t blame Triche for being down. He should have at least gotten some run. Scoop was terrible at the end of regulation.

anger is an emotion

maybe Coach is just trying to coax something out of him. Needs to get out of his head and feel more…

That's just how he is

He showed a little after he made that one pull-up 3. Overall, I think he takes the game a little bit too seriously. I mean, I appreciate Triche being a lunchpail guy who doesn’t mind grinding to get better and to get Ws. That’s admirable. But I also think part of his inconsistency stems from the fact that he always wants to be perfect and to make exactly the right play. It’s like he’s afraid to let himself loose and just play ball.
