Syracuse Basketball: As Bob Knight Watches, Boeheim Passes Dean Smith
Not lost in the great Syracuse Orange win over the Georgetown Hoyas last night is the fact that James Boeheim passed Dean Smith for No. 3 on the career coaching wins list with his 880th victory.
In his 36th year, Boeheim is also No. 1 all-time in Division 1 wins at one school. Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski have both coached at multiple schools.
Next up on the list is Knight, who was on-hand to see Boeheim win No. 880. Knight has 902 wins, which is extremely attainable within this and next season. So long as he lasts at least one more year, Boeheim should retire at No. 2 on the list since we can assume Coach K will still be going for many years yet.
Of course, based on the way Syracuse played in the first half, Boeheim was in no mood to celebrate:
"I’m upset with this team right now," Boeheim said. "We’ll address all that another time."
It's that kind of charming demeanor that got this far. And if he can't be excited, then Brandon Triche will be excited for him:
"All he does is win," guard Brandon Triche said. "He’s a great coach, and I’m happy to be a part of his legacy."

Beautiful
The only thing better would have been a win over our hated rival on a last second 3 pointer by the team’s star player……..
….wait a second: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
/happy dances
Go Orange(men)!
That's a good point
Everyone is slurping the Duke/UNC game because Duke won it on a buzzer beater. Call me biased, but an OT game won on a clutch 3 with under 30 secs to play is pretty damn exiting too.

Yes!
Since the early 1990's I have not been able to get Mike Hopkins' bloody face out of my brain. I don't remember what game it was but I'll never forget that as my first memory of SU basketball. Mike Hopkins, bloody face, bloody nose, all for the love of Syracuse.
Awhile back
I was having the typical “Syracuse doesn’t play anybody” conversation with a guy I play pickup ball with. In addition to insisting that the Orange hadn’t played anybody at that point in the season, he also said Boeheim can’t be compared to the likes of Coach K because of Jim B’s almost 900 wins, 400 of them came against Siena and Colagate (as a hyperbolic example).
Needless to say, that’s bull. Regardless of the mathematical aspect of the fact that, in any given season, there are maybe 3-4 true cupcake games, the whole line of thought is asinine. W’s are W’s. Jim B said it best himself. He’s most proud of having coached at teh same place for 36 years. Who coaches at the same place for that long? Jim B, Coach K, Calhoun. That’s it. You don’t get to keep your job that long if you don’t get Ws. It’s that simple. Every win counts. Every win means something. And winning at the rate Jim B does is simply outstanding

The win record
Is a measure of a lot more than just how good the teams were over the years. There are few coaches with a better story than his.
So your friend lives in a world where Duke never plays any cupcakes?

Mussburger metioned OSU
Did you catch Mussburger’s comments when they had a shot of Coleman? He said Boeheim was all set to take the job at Ohio St, but once Coleman committed, he decided he needed to stay at SU. I had forgotten that JB interviewed for the OSU job, and didn’t realize he almost took it.

Oh yeah
I remember the Knicks rumors, but kinda have the impression no one took them very seriously at the time. But that may be just age catching up with me…
