No. 2 Syracuse Orange ( 23-1) vs. No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas (18-4) GameThread

Georgetown Hoyas at Syracuse Orange, Feb 8, 2012 7:00 PM EST

The No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas and No. 2 Syracuse Orange have met many times in the Carrier Dome, but Wednesday night might be the last time they do it as in Big East battle. You can be sure both teams will make it count.

This will be the 87th encounter between the Hoyas and Orange. Syracuse leads the all-time series 47-39 after it picked up a 58-51 victory over Georgetown last season on Feb 26th, 2011 in Washington, DC.

Jason Clark is pacing Georgetown this season with a team-highs of 15.2 points and 1.8 steals per game. The senior guard has shot 56.2 percent from the field in his last two outings. Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims are both vital to the Hoyas' success as well. Thompson is second in the team with a scoring average of 13.7 PPG. Sims had team-highs of 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in the recent win over South Florida. Otto Porter is reeling in a team-high 6.6 RPG.

But what else do you need? It's Syracuse vs. Georgetown. If you can't get up for this one, you're probably a UConn fan.

I’m usually pretty optimistic, but 7 games is a trend not a blip. Syracuse can’t rebound and can’t shoot 3s.

Thoughts

Some of the best refs all year.

Some of the biggest laziness of the year. They tried harder the notre dame game.

They need to attack the inside the whole half – they only did that for the last 10ish minutes.

Also, put a hand up and actually try to get a damn rebound. They won’t get all of them, sure, but effort is huge in rebounding – I’m not seeing it at all.

by pegs on Feb 8, 2012 7:52 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Refs are letting them play

Which I love. But there were 2 calls I felt they just should have called. Sometimes letting them play goes a little to far.

Halftime

Disappointing, yes. Disastrous, no. The board work has been weak, Beyond weak, actually. When a single frosh put rebounds the entire team, they deserve the tongue lashing Jim B is bound to deliver at half time.

Now, the silver lining. 11 offensive rebounds surrendered, 6 second chance points allowed, they’re only down 4. KJ is carrying the offense by himself, and they’re only down 4. They’re getting to the line. They’re getting good shots. They’re forcing turnovers. The formula for a W is in place. They have 20 more minutes to get it done.

The same old, same old weaknesses

If you aren’t rebounding and aren’t shooting with any degree of competence, all the talent in the world isn’t going to help you. This team totally… completely… and entirely lacks a big time scorer/“go to” guy. Our team needs a guy who can bury a few three pointers to turn momentum and keep it.

Ah well, can’t have it all.

Its been said

But down 4 after the worst half played all year. Ill take it. No way they have another one of those. My keys to the game. Try to rebound. It will help. KJ… stop shooting so many 3s.. Dion. Go to the hole. I hate your fade away shot that hits off the front of the rim.

by Collin B on Feb 8, 2012 7:56 PM EST reply actions

I normally complain abotu too many 3's

But most of them have been good ones, wide open off of drive and kick action. I have no problem with those at all. Just gotta make them.

Enough of the Dion to NBA talk

I don’t think there is a demand for a 2 guard who can’t shoot, can’t pass, can’t rebound, can’t hit winning shots and can’t hit FT to seal a game. Just saying.

Fab on the other hand. Time to start begging him for 1 more year.

Apparently refs 'gave this game to the Cuse'

Because of the charge Melo drew (a textbook charge)
Not letting the shooter check in (Its the rule, a technicality but the rule)
And the last out-of-bounds call, which was close and not clear either way. Ref was 3 feet away.

by Nebkreb on Feb 8, 2012 9:20 PM EST reply actions

All of those calls

by Rocklionheart on Feb 8, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know

but although Scoop made a great play at the end he made a lot of bone head plays. Can’t understand with the way Scoop and Waiters were playing, I don’t get why he didn’t take one of them out and put Brandon in.

by CNYOrange on Feb 8, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

It's NOT about Brandon...

we all want to win a championship. Well the coach needs to determine what his various combinations can do under pressure… particularly end game pressure. Keeping the scooop & Dion combo on the floor is an attempt to let them earn…. what many think should be their’s; the crunch time go to opportunity. Think about it… if Dion is such a force of nature, we need to get him some experience in the moment; AND unfortunately its DION who needs his hand held, his confidence pumped, his game respected. Coach and the rest of us pretty much know what Brandon can do, and that he will continue to do it no matter what. Its Dion we’d like to see live up to his natural talents… or get the opportunity so there’s no arguement left; hopefully just a H&H Dion. The coach, the team , and the individuals need to experience the reality of pressure end game situations. Scoop’s been there; Scoop’s good with Dion; Brandon’s been there and will be next year; its the good Dion we are trying to find and support.

by supgs on Feb 8, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeahbut...

Triche has kinda been suckin out the past few games. Bad ball handling, bad passing, throwing bricks and missing layups. I luv brandon dont get me wrong. I luve the diff combos too…but Triche is in a slump er sumthin…it’s noticeable…at least to me. It’s not just tonight. It’s been a few games now.

Lots of Cuse fans in the DC area. GTown always sells out the Verizon Center for that game. Why end that? Also, a built-in OOC game against a good team for both schools. This seems like a win-win.

How about?

Coming out of a timeout in regulation and launching a fadeaway three pointer? And then that last shot by Dion in regulation? It’s been so long since we have had a decent play in a late game situation with the clock winding down.

It’s odd because we are usually so good coming out of timeouts early in the game.

He had an off night

Every shot he took he makes 9 out of 10 times. All those one times just hit at the same time. He’ll bounce back. Only flaw I’ve seen in his game is he’s not the greatest passer, tries to toss it in where it should be a bounce, and has no zip on his passes. If he can get his passing down he will be a zone buster.

That was the best game I’ve been at in my 4 years here (6 OT Big East tourney was the only BE tourney I haven’t been at since our spring break schedule was different that year). Absolutely awesome tonight. I don’t think I’ve bro-hugged and high fived so many strangers in my life.

I think G’Town missed a lot of shots they normally make, but KJ was the only one doing anything for most of the game, and Fab woke up a little bit over the last 10 minutes or so. And we still won. Absolutely awesome. I’ll remember this one for a long time. .It’s too bad this game wasn’t Saturday with UConn tonight, but whatever.
