It appears that WVU is heading to the Big XII next year. So, they just withdrew from their scheduled game against FSU at Doak Campbell. I would bet that SU would be a good candidate to play at FSU on Sept 8. We are supposed to play WVU away this year anyway, so we wouldn't lose a home game. Plus we're going to the ACC sometime, so it seems like a natural solution for SU to replace WVU.

Interesting to see how things play out

W Virginia will be liable to all BE teams for lost games, home or away. It is real late in the year to find games for Sept. I know they stand to make a lot of money, but it may cost W Virginia a lot more in the long-run unless they strike a deal with the BE ahead of time. Meanwhile, you have 7 BE teams needing to fill a spot and that is going to be hard.

If we end up with just six Big East games

I say we try to schedule a low end MAC or Conf USA team. We already have three AQ’s out of conference and think adding a fourth is a bit much. We need wins and some confidence. This isnt a Rutgers situation, we always schedule tough. Suppose it’s also possible the Big East accelerates one of the new members joining.

I’m sure WVU has done the math and figured the Big 12 money more than makes up for penalties for leaving the BE early and canceling FSU.

If WVU leaves

Is the Big East BCS eligible?

If WVU leaves

It opens the door for Pitt and Syracuse to do the same. IT won’t matter to us if the BEast is BCS elig anyway.

Don't know the costs yet

I assume WV leaving cancels the TV deal. The BE will no doubt sue them for that if they don’t negotiate an exit first. I think they will keep their BCS bid because they have a grace period to move back to 8 teams (which happens in 2013). I’m curious where this takes SU. They aren’t getting out in 2012, but a WV exit almost assures SU out for 2013. In fact, Pitt and SU should shake down the BE for money or they can sue to get the WV treatment and leave the league with 5 teams next year

Im shocked

we havent been more aggressive. I know we want to see how the WVU thing plays out, but the fact that we have no voting rights really bothers me. We really should renegotiate our exit fee and get more tv dollars for staying. Its such a joke. If I were Doc Gross Id be really pissed.

At worst, we should sue the BE to make them pay for the home game we have to schedule now that WVU is leaving. We shouldnt be penalized because the BE couldnt enforce its bylaws.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

West Virginia is in a better position

They have a lot more money to fight the BE. If they get out, it sets the stage for SU and Pitt in 2013. I think that is the end game. The BE will have a hard time defending the 27 month holder if they reach an agreement with WV. Whatever happens, you can be sure WV will be liable to all the BE teams for a lost game. The question is who fills the slots? I think SU was already down a game for 2012, finding 2 teams will be pretty hard with 6 other BE teams trying to do the same.

I think the failure of the BE

to protect its members interests when that happens is the ground we have to get out. And the fact that we are being held to our contractual obligations while not affording us any of our contractually assured rights is what bothers me and Im sure could be argued as a breach of contract.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

I'm with you.

The idea that we have no say so in how anything is happening in the BE, but are still being held captive is really grating.

Already missing 2 teams...

Unfortunately, I think this is where FSU comes into play. If WVU backs out of the BE next year, there’s a really limited number of schools that we can feasibly schedule. I guess we could go the Rutgers route and schedule a bunch of schools for the Deaf and Blind. But, I really don’t see the good Doctor taking that approach. At this time, I’m really feeling like SU will play at Doak sometime this season and lose by 35 just to get to 12 games. Thanks again Marianatto.

reposting from BECB

I looked up all the non-Big East schools that still need an opponent next year, assuming WVU is in the Big 12. Here’s what I came up with.

according to fbschedules.com, assuming WVU moves and the only games anyone will drop are a second (or more) FCS game.

ACC
- Florida State (already playing USF)
- NC State currently has two FCS teams scheduled (already playing UConn)
(FSU and NC State will be in Syracuse’s division in the ACC; both ACC schools may be inclined to help their future conference members)

Big 12
- Oklahoma (2)
- OKlahoma State
(may be inclined to schedule Big East schools if it helps smooth over WVU’s transition)

Big Ten
- Nebraska

CUSA
- UAB
- UTEP
(may not want to schedule Big East schools, since the Big East is raiding CUSA)

MWC
- Bosie State (allowed a 13th game due to playing @Hawaii)
(may want to help their future conference)

SEC
- Arkansas
- Texas A&M (2)

Sun Belt
- Middle Tennessee
- North Texas
- UL-Lafayette

WAC
- UTSA (in-process of moving up from FCS) currently has four FCS teams scheduled

I’d figure FSU, the Oklahoma schools, Boise, and Texas A&M are the best bets other than a second FCS school. The first four have an opening and reason to help out (Oklahoma has two openings and reason to help out), while Texas A&M just has two openings and so really needs someone. If all of their openings were used on Big East schools, that would do it, but it’s likely some won’t be, so someone Rutgers will end up with two FCS schools.

also, they're a state school

which puts them in a somewhat stronger legal position; it’s arguable a non-WV state court can’t force them to do anything.
