Syracuse Defeats St. John's: Quotent Quotables

The Syracuse Orange defeated the St. John's Red Storm 95-70 on Saturday. Here are the quotes to prove it.

Dion Waiters before the game:

"I’m back...I’m back, baby, I’m back."

Dion Waiters after the game:

"I told you I was back. A minor setback for a major comeback."

C.J. Fair, upon learning that he hit his first three-pointer since November 29th against Eastern Michigan.

"November?. Dang, that’s long.’’

Rakeem Christmas, summing up the rebounding problem that plagued Syracuse before today:

"Other teams are outrebounding us, and (SU coach Jim Boeheim) doesn’t like that."

Star-divide

Scoop Jardine, on the return of Fab Melo.

"He’s our anchor. As you can see, we’re a totally different team when he’s on the floor with us.’’

Fab Melo, on what it was like to not only be back but to do so well on a "home" court:

It feels good to be back. S/o to my teammates for handling the business well. MSG is def our house, it was like playing at the dome.

Melo on whether or not he was worried he might not play again this season:

"No, I was never nervous. I knew at some point I would play. I wasn’t nervous about it.’’

Melo on what he brings to the 2-3 Zone:

"I know I affect the zone. I intimidate the other team. They're not going to go inside to try to get layups, stuff like that. That's what I do."

Michael Carter-Williams on his monstrous dunk:

"I just saw an opening and just tried to finish it as hard as I could. I was trying to pick us up a little bit. I was trying to be aggressive. It just happened. We were having fun."

Boeheim, on his attempts to get MCDubz in the game more:

"Michael is a very good player. He just needs to get some time, and I just haven't quite figured out how to play four guards."

Dion Waiters, on how Cousin Scoop is always there to cheer on his accomplishments:

"He's always got a new celebration for me every time I do something, and the first person I look at on the bench is him. He was waiting right there when they called a timeout. That's priceless."

Dion Waiters, responding to a St. John's fan on Twitter who said Dion was "trying o act hollywood in our gym" and that he should "gtfoh."

From what i kno its syracuse gym lol

Kris Joseph on Syracuse's ownership of Madison Square Garden:

"We love playing here. It’s fun playing here. Our fans always come out and support. I always feel like our fans over-power the St. John’s fans. I feel like I didn’t hear them all game. When Cuse Nation’s is in the building, that’s a good sign.’’

I was at the game with my SJ jersey and let me say this: St. John’s fans…YOU HAVE TO START COMING OUT TO GAMES. I would say the ratio of Syracuse fans to SJ fans was at LEAST 10:1. I understand Cuse has had much more success, much more alumni, and a bigger University, but I mean come on. We were at home…not Cuse. New York City is OUR home and there were barely any SJ fans excluding maybe 500 in both student sections. It was to the point where I didn’t even bother getting up to applaud any positive SJ buckets because I was all alone. ST JOHNS FANS PLEASE START COMING TO GAMES AND GIVE US AN ACTUAL HOME COURT ADVANTAGE! So disappointed.

His frustration...

…is understandable. It’s really pretty remarkable how Syracuse fans have taken over that building. Back in the day, ‘Cuse fans outnumbering St. John’s fans at MSG like that would be inconceivable.

Cuse is a good school, but let’s not make it out to be the next Notre Dame or Duke…they are a good not great academic school. When people apply to Cuse they think about the basketball team (For guys anyway), not their academics.

Saying many students don’t go to Cuse solely because of their basketball team is like saying many students don’t go to U. Texas solely because of their football team. Of course they do.

I also can’t help but wonder: what percentage of Syracuse students do you think go there BECAUSE of the basketball team? I would voucher a guess somewhere around 50-60% of them. Syracuse is almost in Canada, yet so many people from the metro area are alumni…makes you wonder if it’s mostly because of basketball.

If Cuse wasn’t in the Big East and didn’t have an amazing basketball team, they would probably have record low applications. I’d bet my life on it.

Security confiscated about 4 signs from the student section 5 minutes into the game. Security told my friend who was holding the Jim, You Knew" sign that they were taking them under the order of Chris Monasch, who thought they were personal attacks. The signs taken were “Jim, You Knew,” “Every Syracuse Player Nailed laurie,” and “Accepting Cowards like Cuse since 1953.” Censorship at its best.

I saw a "if you think he didn't know, you're clueless"

Apparently there are St. John’s fans who know more about the whole thing than we do.

Also, "never schedule them again, " comes followed with “payback is going to be a bitch!” Which is it? Are you playing us or no? Plus they act like Lavin’s classes are the greatest things since sliced bread. Yeah, we haven’t had great recruiting classes. Not to mention those classes keep falling apart and Lavin is the Greg Schiano of basketball (great recruiter, underachiever with that talent). And “they only want to play us to recruit NYC players”. How many scholarship players from the NYC area have we had in the last decade? Mookie, Southerland and Terrance Roberts? Pretty sure that’s about it.

I think this is my favorite-

remove Fab Melo and one other starter and play us again and SJ would have been much much closer in the game because these kids do not quit.

Yeah! Remove half our team and see how well we do then! #2 team in the country my ass!

Also this-

I’m furious at the Orange fans. I get that you can root for your team no matter where they play. But to disrespect the St. John’s fans by doing their stupid standing (how original!) until Syracuse scores is not only disrespectful, but it’s downright inappropriate at an opposing team’s arena.

That’s implying that it’s your arena. And even if it was….really? Disrespectful? Are you that f*cking stupid?

I could go on and on, reading the posts there gives you a million “you serious, Clark?” thoughts.

Pretty nice for fans of a nice catholic school

I guess they must not be alums, especially considering their 6th grade spelling ability. I love that SU fans are the worst ever. Sorry, it is like that no matter what fans they are, but I could feel your pain if the dome was 22K G’town fans and only about 2K SU fans. Of course, how bad are your own fans to sell season tickets?

To be honest, I don’t care about St. John’s. Will anyone miss them if they don’t schedule? They are just another game. Lavin may bring them back, but really, who cares. SU will only schedule them to keep a game at MSG. G’town, Nova, UConn, yes. The rest of the BE is nothing and benefit from SU and Pitt more than anything. Screw them.

But only if they are good and it’s at MSG. The BET game last year was great but those instances haven’t happened in a long time. It’s pointless to play at the Dome though….

Oh man, reading that SJU thread about our fans was awesome!

Best part was how, as the thread progressed, the proportion of Orange fans went from 70% to 75% to 80% to 90%. I could be convinced any of those were correct (it was almost 100% in our section). And I liked the guy complaining that most of the ’Cuse fans were drunk by the time they showed up at MSG… why yes, yes we were!

St. John's should play less games at MSG

There are really only a handful of teams they should play there. Even a game like Louisville or WV only draws a couple thousand at the Garden on a weeknight. Expand Carnasecca somehow and have an actual college basketball atmosphere. Have some weekend games against teams like Louisville, Georgetown and the like as well as any game against Syracuse, UConn and Duke at MSG, and have the rest in Queens. They play Cincy there on Wednesday, how many people do you think they’ll get? 3,000?

Syracuse / Basketball School ..

I bet students/parents love the idea of paying $200,000 just to go to a basketball school.

Currently, there are 12 students at Syracuse that go to Syracuse because it’s a basketball school. And those 12 just manhandled the 12 students that go to St. John’s because it’s a basketball school.

Going to a school with a big-time athletics program is important, but most choose the best academic route.

Also, there’s apparently more hype around the game in NYC if it’s St. John’s we’re playing. That’s why there were about 2,000 non-SU fans there today.

Went to game today ...

I went to the game today who met up with my old intern who is going to St. John’s law. He also went to St. John’s undergrad.

He sat in the student section and admitted that his friends were all dopes for bringing the Laurie Fine photos. Even the kids holding the photos knew it was stupid. They did it to basically get on tv and get fans riled up, which basically worked. They know their team needs a lot of work and more recruits to compete.

He respects Cuse’s game to no-end. His group just wanted the Storm to attempt to make it a game. They really knew they didn’t have a chance.

Aside from a few kids holding photos, it was an amazing atmosphere. The streets around the Garden had a “Marshall St.” feel with thousands of Syracuse fans walking the NYC streets. Even the St. John’s fans I conversed with had tremendous respect for Boeheim and the Orange. They, obviously, want more St. John’s fans to attend games, but without a winning record, like any college team, ticket sales will be down.

Overall, the atmosphere was amazing. Cuse fans bonded all around the Garden.

Highlight of the day was the drunk 50 year-old, who drove down from Cuse with her family this morning, who asked me in the beer line, “Do you know how many beers you can buy at a single time? They only allow two at a time at the Dome.”

storming protocol

I think it was justified…imo, storming fully justified when:

opponent is your biggest hoops rival – check
rivalry is about to be destroyed by conference re-alignment (get in the last laugh)- check
opponent is among the top ranked – check

Therefore, protocol mandates a court-storming on Wednesday!

Was at the Garden...

…and it was as I expected. I’ve said it before and I will say it again – this is the best Cuse team I have ever seen. It’s a shame our rivalry is coming to an end – I expect next years game at the Dome will be the last regular season one between the two schools. As for the crowd, you guys had the edge, but not overwhelming. When your down by twenty, your fans don’t make a lot of noise. I expected that for a Saturday noon game on a Giants superbowl weekend when we had very little shot of doing anything. But again, Cuse looks very, very good. I think it’s you guys and the Wildcats. The ACC schools are overrated. Our five freshmen were within four of Duke with under a minute at Duke. I am not sure who will beat you the rest of the way in conference, but I am sure there will be one. The NCAA is all about match-ups but I would be shocked if you did not get far. Our Johnnies are on their way. With a few more bodies and Lavin on the bench next season, we’ll be back in the top half with this group. See you at the BET.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 11:17 AM EST reply actions

Not overwhelming?

Most accounts from either team’s fans have it at an 80/20 edge….

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

No...

…that is false. It sounded louder for Cuse because the Johnnies were really out matched. As I said, NYC newspapers put it at 50/50 but it was not that either. I would say 60/40. That’s the first Cuse / St. Johns sell out in over a decade. We have been getting between 11 and 14 k for weekend games except fir duke which has sold out.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Huh

The Post, Daily News and Times don’t say that, so I’m not sure what NYC papers you’re talking about. What the Daily News says is "The Orange, with its large alumni base in the Metropolitan area, provided a convincing argument for that Saturday when its fans filled three quarters of the soldout Garden "

The way it looked on TV didn’t say that. Your own fans don’t say that. Everyone I’ve talked to that was there don’t say that.

Guess you’re the only one that was paying attention, though. I mean, it’s usually at least 60/40 SU fans, but this time your fan base is throwing hissy fits over how many people in Orange there were.

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Could care less how many orange fans there were...

…it’s a big deal for you guys to play a game or two at the Garden. New York newsday had 50/5o and espn said half the crowd was Cuse. But they were wrong anyway. It was more than half Cuse. That is for sure. Not close to 80/20, but a Cuse crowd nonetheless. Too bad it’s done. I don’t see Cuse and the Johnnies scheduling together after the move and next year will surely be at the dome unless we play you twice. I am thinking Cuse and Pitt are not going to get the teams they want on the schedule next season, like BC in their last season. Nice while it lasted.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I'm curious where you got your information from.

ESPN said:

Syracuse (23-1, 10-1 Big East) rallied behind the return of the 7-foot Melo, taking a 41-27 halftime lead and blowing it open by starting the second half on a 16-3 run in front of a sellout crowd of 19,979 at Madison Square Garden, most of whom were wearing orange.

And New York Newsday’s recap doesn’t give any indication of the breakdown of the crowd.

It looks like neither of those sources said 50/50. If I had to guess, digging your heels in is not worth it.

I wasn’t at the game and also don’t care much what the breakdown was. But obviously I care a little bit, since I took the time to check into your claim. And obviously you are a little bit since you went out of your way to make the claim that it was closer to 60/40 than 80/20. Sort of like you went out of your way to guess that Syracuse would lose again in conference play. Unlike you, I’m not going to make any predictions about how your team will fare for the rest of the season. I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was a sore winner.

by TEMSON on Feb 5, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

I was there...

it was AT LEAST 80/20 Syracuse

by tommyt330 on Feb 6, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

One more thing...

…which was a very moving point of the game. Evefry second half St. John’s honors a miliatry member and recites his or her accomplishments and put the individual up on Garden vision. A great ovation from the crowd for yesterday’s honoree. A nice Big East moment.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 11:29 AM EST reply actions

As someone that lived near Jamaica Queens for years...

Syracuse is better… That part of Queens is very nice, actually a lot like any random Upstate suburb, albeit one with an exceptionally dense population. The people have decent sized backyards, you can have friends over for cookouts, etc. It’s a great spot for families. However, the nearest area with even a halfway decent nightlife would be Bell Blvd in Bayside (hi James Southerland!) and that’s at best a poor man’s Armory Square.

Now if St. John’s actually wants to move their campus to Manhattan, they might have a point. However, this con some of their fans try to run on the internet that they’re located in Midtown is just a lie. Seriously, Marquette or Cincinnati fans might be gullible enough to buy that, but we’re Syracuse. Most of our fans either come from NYC, move there after graduating, or spend a decent chunk of their lives there. We know exactly who St. John’s is and where they’re located. Manhattan’s a big place. Want to share? :-)

It’s kind of a moot point though. When the Roosevelt Island tech campus is finished, the entire city is going to belong to Cornell anyway. Cornell sells out MSG for college hockey games. COLLEGE HOCKEY!

Good point...

No different intention at all..

…just responding to the responses that were made after. Cuse by far was the better team, knew it would be. Definitely a Cuse crowd, but not the 80/20 that some on here are saying and not the 50/50 reported by some NYC outlets. Always liked the Cuse Johnnies rivalry, but it appears to be done once the acc move is made. You guys can call it your gym all you want, I get it. I get why you do it. Not a big deal. Was actually complimenting you guys, but it was taken the wrong way by some. Good luck the rest of the season.

Have you ever even seen a St. John's fan anywhere in NYC outside of 4 or 5 in the Garden?

Living in the NYC area my whole life, I know I haven’t. But New York is a Johnnies town!

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

I’ve spent my whole life there. Most people know where Syracuse is.

Then again, it wouldn’t be surprising if someone with a St. John’s education wouldn’t know what state NYC is in, let alone Syracuse.

Did you read what I wrote?

I didn’t say they don’t know where it is, they don’t generally care much about upstate ny.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

I thought you were leaving?

You said they “don’t consider it part of NY State”. Only a moron with a degree from a school like St. John’s follows logic like that. There’s an NY following Syracuse.

And who cares if they don’t care about upstate New York? We already know that the NYC area cares much more about Syracuse than anyone else, especially more than a commuter school like St. John’s.

We are pretty lightened up

You just seem butthurt about MSG being a home atmosphere for us that you feel the need to come on here and boast that NYC outlets are reporting it was 50/50 when none of them are. Your the only person in the world who believes it wasn’t an incredibly orange tinted crowd. Only one complaining and lying is you, homeslice.

See you next time the Garden takes an Orange bath. Maybe your team will have better luck against us then, but probably not.

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

There won't be any more games

And I suspect the G’town rivalry will end too. I never considered St. John’s a rival though. The BE non-basketball schools are furious with Pitt, Syracuse and W. Virginia and I expect them to mutually agree to not schedule any of those teams in the future.

The funny thing is fans of the non-basketball schools will never see why football teams had to leave a conference where basketball only schools dictate what happens in football. When schools like St. John’s teamed with Notre Dame to kill a billion dollar football TV deal, they essentially kicked those 3 teams out of the league. Oh well. I can see Syracuse setting up annual games at MSG.

by orangetundra on Feb 5, 2012 3:12 PM EST reply actions

St. John's did not vote against the contract...

…Pitt actually did with most of the football schools. I don’t fault Cuse for leaving. I get it. It’s a football world. My guess isvthatnit had morevto do with Cuse not wanting to be in a football conference with the bigbeast football schools then the hoops schools. From what I have read most Cuse fans would rather not leave big east hoops, but if you need to take care of football first there is really no choice than to either split or join another league. I don’t think STJ will schedule Cuse only because we generally play two major ooc games a season besides any November tourneys. Duke is always on the schedule and we are not going to leave that one andante second usually rotates among the other big conferences. This year and last it was UCLA. So I just don’t see it continuing. But I am not an AD so I have no idea whether it will or not. And I would suspect that g’town would be the game you would keep, not us.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much right

Most SU fans would love to stay in the BE, basketball side only. But that’s not how it works. Football will generate a lot more revenue. I think the main goal of SU will be to preserve G’town game. But, like I said, that probably won’t happen. It no longer matters who voted (or didn’t vote) for what. Read the W. Vir lawsuit and you will see there has been a clear line drawn. It will take some time for that anger to subside. I can see UConn on the schedule only because they will want to create allies so they can move to the ACC later. Otherwise, the rivalries will be lost because grown men got their feelings hurt (on both sides of the divide) and acted like a bunch of little kids. Too bad. I think an annual G’town v Syracuse in MSG would be an awesome tradition to start.

by orangetundra on Feb 5, 2012 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see you guys keeping UConn...

…why would you? And I don’e see wanting to play G’Town at MSG either. Why would you want to move that game out of the Domw where you would sell more tickets and keep every penny. It’s the same reason Boeheim said he’ll never play an ACC home game at the Garden. Over the last decade. St. John’s Syracuse has sold out once – that was yesterday. During the last handfull of stj /cuse at the garden, attendance is generally 14k. Once you go to the ACC, the G’Town game will probably gain popularity. So why not make the Hoyas go to the Dome in from of 30k plus. Boeheim said he wants to keep G’Town and STJ on teh shedule. UConn may be with you guys in a few years anyway

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

And the way the Garden works...

…is you pay rent obviously for the games. St. John’s is a tenant of the building during college hoops. They use the Knicks locker room (although now they remove all the knick carpeting, pics and name plates and replace it with Johnnies stuff). A few years ago I had lunch with Norm Roberts who said the Johnnies keep all ticket sales and a piece of concession for their games. Generally, they make a profit at the 9,000k mark of attendance. Last year was the first profitable year for them in a while because it was the first year they began to improve and were hitting more than that 9,000k on average. Even this season attendance has been pretty good except for weeknight games. So if Cuse has to rent the place for 100k for one game (which is about the number), why do that when you get a much better home court advantage at home and keep all the cash?

It’s more about throwing a bone or two to our NYC alumni

by Dan Lyons on Feb 6, 2012 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

UConn rivalry is probably falling apart

Not only because of the conference shift, but because Calhoun is probably gonzo.

Georgetown doesn’t have a whole lot to gain by playing in the Dome, just like we don’t have a whole lot to gain playing in DC now that UMD, UVA, etc. are on the schedule. I don’t think either side will really want a home and home.

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Agree on UConn

Once you remove JB and/or Calhoun, not much there. I threw that out there only to say UConn would be receptive to a game only because they have made it clear they want in the ACC and keeping allies (like SU) would be important. The rest of the BE are probably going to stonewall the 3 teams leaving.

I think an SU/G’town game at MSG would be less about money (though still important) but more about SU keeping their footprint there. You cannot deny how much they’ve grown in NYC the past decade. Keeping NE recruiting lines open while playing down south is important. Some things are more important than money if not for any reason than to keep a funding stream alive.

by orangetundra on Feb 5, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think going to the ACC is that much of a threat to losing a 'NE footprint'

I think the ACC is going to be looked at much differently than a southern conference now. You have us, BC, Pitt, Maryland and UVA all in what I think a lot of people would consider to be the northeast (from having family in Charlottesville, I’ve always had a real tough time considering it “the south”; Blacksburg is a different story). And I don’t doubt for a second that the conference tourney will take over MSG.

On the flip side, the Big East all of a sudden becomes a conference that in the very near future may only have G’Town, ‘Nova, SH, SJU and Providence in the northeast. Even if UConn and Rutgers don’t defect, the majority of the conference is now in Florida, Texas and the Midwest. And it isn’t like Duke and UNC don’t get kids from Jersey City, Elizabeth, the Bronx, etc.

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think G'Town will continue

SJU would try and get us in there if they were smart, otherwise they’re playing in front of 3k at the Garden every night. All of this “you’re killing your tradition and rivalries!” stuff is just bullshit. We already only play G’Town once, the same as Fordham, Eastern Michigan, Florida or DePaul. If other teams think we’re doing this to kill a basketball rivalry that already is barely happening thanks to the conference, then I don’t know what to tell you.

I read someone the other day say how Syracuse should’ve waited because look at what the Big East pulled in. Seriously? How long did you want us to wait? Until the Titanic was completely underwater? And now the conference is even more chaotic- non-football schools, full members, football only schools, schools in Idaho, California, Texas…that conference isn’t staying together very long. Even the Boise and Houston fans are skeptical, and the UConn, Rutgers, USF, Cincy and L’ville fans want out ASAP. And if we wait, UConn and Rutgers take those ACC spots. They wanted us to stop and save someone that was already dead (DePaul, Providence, etc.) while someone else took the last life raft.

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think Syracuse was right to want to go.

The way I see it from Syracuse’s perspective is this. Generally they had no problem with their basketball partners, especially the original ones. But they had to make a choice for the money maker – football. The choice was one of three:
1.) Stay with the Hybrid
2.) Split off with the football schools and expand
3.) Find a new league.

The worst option for Cuse was number two. I don’t think they wanted to be in an all sports league of 12 with the schools they would have to be joined with. If they could not go to another BCS conference, it was far better to stay with the hoops only schools because it put them against their natural hoops rivals in the markets they want to be in and with business partners that worked for them hoops wise. Being in an all sports league with just the football schools and maybe houston, ecu and ucf was not appealing (which is why I hope the Catholics split off as well at this point). The best option to protect all of cuse’s sports was to go Big Ten or ACC. ACC basketball has been pretty bad and I think Cuse will well there and might have even more sucess than in the Big East. There does not seem to be that every night is a grind in the ACC. No reason for Cuse to wait. They knew who would be coming in. It was never going to be Penn State or Maryland. You guys will keep Georgetown. I think both schools’ alum will want it and TV will want it. That’s really all that matters.

by redmen9194 on Feb 5, 2012 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

That's always been my point

If the BE could get some good football schools (like Boise) so easy, why wait until 3 teams decide to leave to do anything? The WV lawsuit is a an awesome document and shows just how problematic the conference is when non-football schools have equal vote in football matters. The basketball schools did not want to expand to 12 football teams because that means they now have 20 basketball teams to divide the pie with.

It is clear WV is leaving after this year and the AQ spot is gone by 2013. The BE could have remained strong by expanding but it is clear they will become weaker from inaction. The real question is 2012/13 the last year of SU and Pitt?

by orangetundra on Feb 5, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

To continue crappy Titanic analogies

The ship was already sunk when the captain said “hey, I think we have a leak, send someone to go take a look at it”. And then when duct tape gets thrown on it and only the mast is sticking out of the water, people want to tell us, “see, you should’nt have jumped on the life raft, the ship is sailing just fine!”

by cuse2012 on Feb 5, 2012 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

I hate to say it...

…but I think we all actually agree on this! See there is common ground. I think 2012 / 2013 is the last year for Cuse and Pitt. The hoops schools actually said they would let them out earlier but are deferring to the football schools who want them in as long as possible. If new teams are coming in 2013, there is really no reason whatsoever to hold them to another season.
