Syracuse 95 - St. John's 70: MCDubz In The Hizzouse

Look, when it comes to Michael Carter-Williams, I'm going to make MCDubz happen. You can either get on board or you can get out of the way. Kinda like how the St. John's Red Storm got out of the way of MCDubz and the Syracuse Orange on Saturday.

Fab Melo returned to the Syracuse lineup after a three-game absence and the sophomore center paid immediate dividends with a career-high 14 points, as the No. 2 Orange controlled the paint and rolled to a 95-70 victory over St. John's at Madison Square Garden.

Dion Waiters and C.J. Fair also scored 14 points for the Orange (23-1, 10-1 Big East), while Kris Joseph added 13. The comfortable victory gave Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim his 879th career win, tying him with the legendary Dean Smith for third on the all-time Division I list.

Of the many big stories on the day, perhaps none stands out as much as MCDubz' breakout game. In seventeen minutes of action, the freshman scored 13 points, dished three assists and sparked the offense as it pulled away late in the first half. Oh and he also did this...

Kudos to MCDubz' mom for signing the permission slip and allowed him on an overnight trip to NYC. He earned his ice cream today. As you imagine, the little guy is tuckered...

If you want to watch Kris Joseph's solid garbageman work, Christmas' alley-oop dunk and Dion's mega-slam that slammed the door on the game, you can do so here.

This game was just what the doctor ordered. A ton of points, Fab re-establishes himself, the team starts to re-gel and the Orange looked dominant. Just in time, too, as the Georgetown Hoyas come to town on Wednesday. Check out some more quotes and stats from SB Nation NY.

on that Waiters dunk, if you freeze it right, he looks like that Fab statute someone posted the other day

no idea how he cocks his arm so far back like that…if he ever gets jammed by the rim it would dislocate his shoulder with how much force he uses.

What I like about this pic

Is that you can see he’s been in the weight room and is working on filling out his frame. He’s got a little meat on him. He’s listed at 184 but I’ll bet he’s over 190 by now. If he can fill out to an even 200-205 or so, he’ll be a beast.

He definitely has

It’d be great if he got up to even 210, though. I think Andrius got up to 205, and McDubz is a 2-3 inches taller.

And what I liked more than the dunk

Was the decision making. Pushing the ball after the press break, head up, saw no one was closing off his lane to the rim and….BANG! Poster.

Southerland

I’m still dissappointed in JSouth for the end of that game. I know the Johnnie did a little fake pass or whatever, but it just irked me.

I think we all feel that way

That plus having an awful game might land him on the bench for all of Wednesday and Saturday. I couldn’t tell if the two had been jawing at each other or not (a lot of people are saying they were), but when you just kicked the shit out of the other team on their “home” court, you don’t need to respond to it at all. Just point at the score, smile, and walk off with the win. Anything more is being a clown.

Don't be too hard on him.

This isn’t the NBA. He is a college kid. He’ll learn. Doubt we see anything like that again. Small lapse in judgement.

I agree that it was a stupid, ridiculous play

But nothing that merits a benching.

Gotta let it go man, thats just something really petty to be mad over...its not like he dunked with 1 second to go up 9 like henson did for unc tonight

Henson acted he like we dribbling the clock out and sprinted for a one handed dunk.

I don't think it was that big a deal

I thought Southerland was just joking around, and the St. John’s player understandably wasn’t in the mood. It was a dumb thing to do by Southerland, but I don’t think he was trying to show anyone up.

by Rocklionheart on Feb 4, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

Agree, because he is a goofy kid

But what if he had poked it loose… would he have gone in for a jam? Now that would’ve been bush.

If it was easy, I'd be doing it...

by RunADK on Feb 4, 2012 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but it wouldn't have counted anyway

They stopped play with 0.8. Even if he had gotten the ball, there’s no way he would have made it to the other end in time for a basket.

Honestly, I would have liked to see him throw down something sick after the buzzer just because.

It just felt like he was being a bully or that annoying kid who thinks that’s funny. I know it’s not a big deal but think about if someone on Georgetown did it to us (not that we’d ever lose to them, especially by 25).

Considering his target was the ball

I don’t think he should be repremanded very much, maybe some extra suicides or something. If he went at the player then that definitely merits a suspension, but his target was the ball.

by adselver15 on Feb 4, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

It was bush though

Game was over. That was rubbing it in for no reason.

No suspension, but he definitely needs to learn not to do that.

I think he was just handing the ball to the ref

I don’t think Southerland should be benched, but it looked like St. John’s was just handing the ball to the ref and trying to walk of with a little class (it’s hard to walk off with much pride when you lose by 25). Syracuse usually plays with class, and it’s dumb moves like that that damage the image.

Who'd thunk it?

Five different guys in dbl figures today… and three of them were not Scoop, Brandon, or JSouth. I think that speaks volumes for this team. Those 3 guys have in the past, and will in the future, produce for us to win big games as this season moves on; but gotta love the efforts of KJ, the Big Bastard, Dion, CJ, and MCW. We won the rebounding battle, didnt turn the ball over, and won by 25 going away while still shooting less than 30% from 3. Those shots will fall eventually, but its great to see this team overcome and keep its focus on winning each game. Players play the game; but gotta give the coaching staff kudos for all they are doing… whatever it is, its working. Go Orange.
