Big East Tourney Trip Suggestions?
I'm a huge 'Cuse basketball fan from Minnesota. I'm heading to my first Big East tourney next month- first trip to NYC as well. I was hoping someone could offer some suggestions about how to make the trip a bit easier. I don't have tickets and plan to get from scalper out there. What can I expect? I assume there will be plenty of tickets available, but how about lower level tickets? Or where are good seats to sit at MSG. Any help would be great. thanks

You should have good luck
Assuming SU gets the double bye , wait outside the Garden after the early rounds and pick up loser seats, no problem.
That is your best chance scenario
And if you have friends in NYC/NJ/Long Island area, stay with them as opposed to a hotel!
Hell, stay somewhere upstate and take the train down.
Trains out of Poughkeepsie run down to the city like every 1/2 hour

I went to a preseason NIT
I stayed in Secaucus, NJ. There’s a bus stop right in the middle of a bunch of hotels. Take that to the bus station and right into midtown Manhattan at the port authority on 40th street. It’s like 9 blocks to MSG on 31st.
When they have sporting events like that the stations stay open late, also, so you will be able to repeat your path back to the hotel.
First trip to NYC?...if you can swing it, stay in NYC!
Respect to the other posters suggesting staying outside the city, but come on!!! This is the greatest f-in city in the world here. If you are in for the first time, do everything you can to stay in Manhattan. For one, do as Mike I says and wait for the first and/or second round games to end…find the losers and make a deal with them outside the venue.
Plan your visit from there. Try if you can to get out of the Garden/Times Square area for a while and check out the city. I was a Syracuse townie and for years didn’t leave the area around the garden…I thought NYC was a total dump.
Have lived in Manhattan for 6 years over the past two decades and there is so much cool stuff to do. Hit the village, SOHO, whatever, but explore and enjoy! This isn’t a travel blog so I’ll stop here…have a GREAT time, explore, and Go Orange!

Hotel
I don’t know what your money situation is, but if you’re not rolling in it, finding a hotel in Manhattan will be tough.
Don’t be afraid of decent hotels in Brooklyn or Jersey City. They don’t sound too inviting but so long as you stay close to the water, you’re only a few subway stops away from Manhattan and no further away from MSG than if you stayed uptown.
But please stay near the rivers, especially in Jersey City. It gets dicey quick when you go inland.

okay, now that we've scared the ____ out of him...
…if you can swing it (mid $200s all-in), there are lots of hotels Midtown East (40’s-60th street, east of Park) and Upper East Side hotels that are not nearly as expensive as the tourist traps in Times Square, and are legit, clean, good hotels. Affinia Gardens on 64th St b/w 2nd and 3rd is an example that isn’t too far from where I used to live. a block away from the F train that drops you off a block from the Garden.
Sean and Mike I are right, there are quite good options on the Jersey side, but again, it’s a lot more fun to stay in Manhattan if it’s your first time.
Have a great time no matter where you stay!

thanks for all the suggestions. I will be arriving Wed. morning until Sunday. Wed. night staying at a friends place in Brooklyn, but will be in a hotel thurs-sunday. Hopefully I can score some lower level tickets from one of the losing teams fans.
Even if you have upper-level tickets
If you are staying for both games of a double session, you can always grab a lower-level ticket stub from fans departing from the first game. This works great in the NCAA games if you happen to be playing in the second game, too!
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.
