No. 2 Syracuse Orange (22-1) vs. St. John's Red Storm (10-12) GameThread

Syracuse Orange at St. John's Red Storm, Feb 4, 2012 12:00 PM EST

Photo

As Fab Melo returns to the lineup after missing three games over an academic issue, No. 2 Syracuse wants to reaffirm its place atop the college basketball kingdom, not to mention the state of New York, when they take on the St. John's Red Storm Saturday at noon. The game will televised on ESPN.

Considering the Johnnies don't have a player over 6'8", Melo's return should keep help the Orange regain their footing in the paint, grab more rebounds, change the course of the other team's offense and control the tempo.

MSG is the Orange's home away from home. Syracuse will be playing in Madison Square Garden for the third time this year (NIT Season Tipoff) and the 159th time in the program’s history (all-time record of 87-71).

St. John's has won two of three since starting an all-freshmen lineup led by D'Angelo Harrison and Moe Harkless, who have combined to average 43.7 points in that stretch. They dominated the same West Virginia squad that almost beat Syracuse last week.

Syracuse leads the all-time series with St. John’s, 48-37 and has won the last six meetings.

G'ORANGE!

This article made me laugh

Even if you win today, we’ll keep outdrawing you every single time we go there.

they are utterly disregarding the tradition that St. John’s has with New York City and Madison Square Garden. It says a lot that they need to try so hard to make things clear."

And that “tradition” includes routinely getting outdrawn by Orange fans and getting smacked in your own building.

Oh Queens Community College fans, they’re a silly, delirious bunch.

Halftime

I couldn’t have scripted it any better. Even the first 5 minutes was OK, given the defense effort. Fab showed why he’s Syracuse’s most important player. MCW played great fro the 3 minutes of burn he got. KJ is off to a great start with 9 and 5. Great way to tune up for G-Town on Wednesday.

In departure news, West Virginia today notified Florida State that they will not play this year.

Could this mean WVU is definately on it’s way out? Could this lead to us leaving as well?

Go Cuse!

South shouldn't have done that

Shoving him isn’t any better. Take the ball away and go home with your loss.

by cuse2012 on Feb 4, 2012 2:04 PM EST reply actions

And all is right in the world again.

Talk about depth and balance. 14 from Fab, Dion and CJ, 13 from KJ and MCW. I know St. John’s is young, undermanned, undersized and missing their coach, but damn. For the Orange to flex and lay the smackdown on them like that is impressive. I’m not even gonna bother with key stats. Everyone played well. Even Southie got it going in the end, though the attempted steal at the end was questionable. I like the KG-esque, “no freebies” attitude, but its prolly bet to leave that one alone and take your 25 point W back to the ’Cuse.

To be fair about the coaching part

not many schools have someone as qualified on their bench as Keady. and no school has anyone with as great a combover.

by nc44 on Feb 4, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

True

But the only thing I saw Keady do all game was hold a clipboard and look old.

St John's

This is the same St John’s team that battled from 22 down at Duke in the second half and got it down to 4. If everyone stays they should be very good next season. For Cuse to go out there and take away all their will in the second half is impressive even though St John’s isn’t that good yet. That was something Duke couldn’t do AT HOME.

by krackatoan on Feb 4, 2012 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

I take that back

I do have a couple key stats:

Syracuse, 7-21 3pt. Still far too many in my opinion, but at least they made a semi-respectable percentage.

Syracuse, 70 field goal attempts. That’s a lot. A lot.

St. John’s- 70 points, 40% FG,. 46% 3pt. 14 ast, 6 stl, 10 TO. Honestly, it wasn’t a bad showing by the Johnnies. If they play like that against pretty much any other team in the BEast, they probably win.

by FeloniousPhunk on Feb 4, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair, we pretty much stopped playing D for the last twelve minutes.

And started playing “let them score so we can get more points”

by Mike I. on Feb 5, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

But is there another team in the BEast that’s even half as good defesively at their best than Syracuse at their best? Matador D by the Orange is what most teams are able to do when they’re on.

I don't think Southerland was really trying to steal the ball

Just messing with the dude. But you know what they say: “It’s all fun and games until someone gets lightly shoved in the back.”

Besides that, great win. I really hope Waiters sticks around for another year for a lot of reasons, one of them being the chance to watch him and MCW play significant minutes together.

Let them have that

They don’t have anything else. Not even their home arena. I see they were bitching about having so many Syracuse in MSG montages…..maybe that’s because we actually have history there.

Irish up 5 with 15 to go

Also, I’ve noticed we keep getting ACC Network games here. Have they been doing that everywhere or did they just expand it to here and Pittsburgh?

by cuse2012 on Feb 4, 2012 2:15 PM EST reply actions

ND

win would be big here. I don’t see ND winning at WVU this week. which would mean an SU win against Gtown would put them basically 3 games clear (tiebreaker over Marquette) with 6 to go.

by krackatoan on Feb 4, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Southerland?

Pretty fuckin stupid. Makes the team look like a bunch of dicks…

by SyracuseBills on Feb 4, 2012 2:17 PM EST reply actions

He wasn't

playing hard. He was being a goofball and was just standing around and then tried to take the ball from SJU who clearly was content in letting the clock run out. It’s not like Southerland was playing tough defense and tried to steal the ball. He was being a clown. Let the clock run out. If someone did that to SU we would be going crazy.

by krackatoan on Feb 4, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Right

To me he was just goofing off, but it was still stupid as hell when you win by 25. Not very sportsmanlike. If I was the SJU player I would have chucked the ball as his dome.

by SyracuseBills on Feb 4, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously?

I mean, the chirping that we were “running up the score” when St. John’s was pressing up until the end is absolutely retarded.

But there’s 10 seconds left in a 25 point game and he’s holding onto the ball to let the clock run out. I don’t know if the guy was chirping at South or anything, but even if he is, remind him that a) we thumped them and b) that sell-out crowd was there to see the boys in Orange. Anything more is just being a clown.

Anyone watching this UNC/UMD game?

Officiating is HORRENDOUS. One MD guy got called for pushing a guy in the back who was BEHIND him. Just now the Terps’ center got called for fouling Henson after missing the block and the man by a mile. After Henson misses the dunk in embarrassing fashion and the ref blows the whistle a solid 3 seconds after the miss.

I’m telling you, this ACC thing is one big UNC/Duke conspiracy

by cuse2012 on Feb 4, 2012 5:42 PM EST reply actions

After this win

I don’t think there’s any question as to what our ranking should be. With Fab we win games by 20, without him, we win by maybe 5 or so. This team is either the best or 2nd best in the country with Fab Melo.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
