This Day in 'Cuse History - February 3, 2001

Shumpert living the dream in Europe. via cdn.euroleague.net

It seems like the Signing Day excitement has calmed down a bit so it's a perfect day to travel back to February 3, 2001.

This was the day the #12 Syracuse Orange traveled to Raleigh, NC to take on the unranked North Carolina State Wolfpack. Syracuse was down by nine with under 4 minutes to go and the Wolfpack had two shots to win but could not convert. SU pulled it out and squeaked by in this non-conference battle 54-53 in front of 16,494 fans.

Syracuse improved to 18-3 while NC State fell to 10-10.

Leading the way for SU was Preston Shumpert as he poured in 25 and grabbed 9 rebounds. Damone Brown finished with 12 points and 12 boards. Allen Griffin had a solid game with 8 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals. Other highlights for 'Cuse included Jeremy McNeil with 4 rebounds and DeShaun Williams with 6 points and 4 assists.

Anyone remember James Thues (always wondered about that spelling)? He played two minutes coming off the bench. This was another pretty talented team with Shumpert leading the way! It's all about the Orange!

Shump is my fav all time Orangeman.

Just make sure that you never, NEVER bring up this same group of players’ follow-up season.

The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.

Shump was an also-ran IMO

Among all-time Syracuse players. He came in as a shooter and was able to develop a nice all-around game by the time he left. He’s the proto-Demetrius Nichols (take that however you want). I will say, though, Shump is a genuinely nice guy. I played 2 on 2 against him once in Archibald and he was just having a good time busting my ass, but wasn’t a dick about it or anything. As opposed to, say, Allen Griffin who was, let’s say, less gracious the couple times I played with him.

Rode on an elevator once

With Thues and DeShaun. All I remember of their conversation was Thues saying, “He [some absent third party] got them white b*tches.” That pretty much sums the two of them up.

Does anyone remember Shump's shot

I always remember it having a crazy high trajectory.

Oh yeah!

He used to bring it way up, almost behind his head before he would shoot.
