2012 NFL Combine: Grading The Orange

Stay connected for news and updates

The 2012 is in the books and four Syracuse Orange players have done what they could to try and stand out from the crowd. Some succeeded, some did not and questions still remain for all of them.

Jared Smith at SB Nation NY gave grades to each player based on their performance. The best performer, as you suspected, was Chandler Jones who received a B-.

There was nothing outstanding about Jones' NFL Combine performance, however, there wasn't anything bad about it, either.

Phillip Thomas suffered from a rough 40-yard-dash en route to a C-.

Needing a strong showing in the 40-yard dash to secure, at least, a draft position, Thomas posted a disappointing time of 4.74 seconds, making him the fourth-slowest secondary prospect in Indianapolis.

Smith added that Thomas may have tweaked his ankle in the process.

OL Andrew Tiller had himself a no-good, very-bad combine and he received a D.

Tiller (6-4, 324) had decent measurements, but, that's about all the good that came out of his NFL Combine performance, as his numbers were among the lowest of all the offensive line prospects.

Finally, Nick Provo received an N/A since he skipped drills as he recovers from undergone shoulder surgery.

So how did their combine performances influence draftability?

Smith sees Chandler as a 2nd-3rd rounder, Thomas is a last round/FA possibility, Tiller will go undrafted and Provo will go on the final day of the draft.

Meanwhile, In the first Draft Tek seven-round 2012 NFL Mock Draft, Chandler went in the third round to the Buffalo Bills. They also had the Detroit Lions picking Thomas in the fourth round in a bit of a surprise.

This blog at WEEI.com says Chandler Jones could be an option for the Patriots in the firs round, but doesn't pull the trigger.

RantSports.com, meanwhile, does pull the trigger on Jones for the Patriots with the 31st pick.

The most important day for all of these guys and a bunch more former Orange will be March 8th on Syracuse Pro Day. One interesting question raised on Twitter is whether or not Phillip Thomas is allowed to participate in that considering he's suspended from football activities. If anyone knows, please share. Otherwise, we'll find out soon enough.
