No. 2 Syracuse Orange (28-1) @ Connecticut Huskies (17-10) GameThread

Syracuse Orange at Connecticut Huskies, Feb 25, 2012 9:00 PM EST

The Connecticut Huskies hope to exact some revenge against the second-ranked Syracuse Orange tonight, as the Big East Conference rivals meet at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

This is the second meeting between the two in the last two weeks, as the Orange prevailed at home on February 11 in an 85-67 final. As a result, SU's lead in the all-time series increased to 52-36, and it was the fourth win in the last five encounters for coach Jim Boeheim's club over the Huskies. Ironically though, the Orange have never won at Gampel Pavilion.

UConn will be playing once again without coach Jim Calhoun as he continues to nurse a back injury that has been bothering him since last summer. The Huskies are 17-10 on the year, but a game below .500 in conference at 7-8. They have however, won two of their last three games, the most recent being a 73-70 overtime decision at Villanova on Monday. Split between Storrs and Hartford, UConn is 12-3 at home this season.

UConn owns favorable margins in both scoring (+5.0) and rebounding (+4.3) this season, but is in the negative in turnover differential (-1.7). The Huskies have three double-digit scorers in the form of Jeremy Lamb (17.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg), Shabazz Napier (12.7 ppg, 5.8 apg) and Ryan Boatright (10.2 ppg), while center Andre Drummond nets 9.9 ppg and leads the team with 7.6 rpg. As a collective unit, Connecticut is limiting the opposition to 38.3 percent field goal efficiency. Lamb hit for a career-high 32 points in leading the Huskies back from an 18-point deficit to prevail at Villanova earlier in the week in overtime. No other player reached double figures for UConn, which managed a 43.1 percent shooting effort that included a 7-of-23 showing from three-point range. The Wildcats shot just 40.3 percent from the floor, but committed 15 turnovers. UConn outscored 'Nova in second-chance points (17-8) and in bench points (11-4).

I have a buddy who goes to uconn and he said one of his friends saw burr at a frat party last night doing a keg stand. They later threw him out because he drank all the beer.

by cuse445 on Feb 25, 2012 8:50 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Man this one would be sweet

We don’t have much to lose (or really gain) tonight, but UConn losing this game could do so, so much damage to their program for this year and the future. They’d start to look like the norm in that C-USA revival the Big East is about to become.

by cuse2012 on Feb 25, 2012 8:23 PM EST reply actions

No tourney this year,

no tourney next year, and stick a spoon in a HOF coach. I’m not an expert, but that has to hurt recruiting.

That, more than anything, is what makes me nervous

There are plenty of bubble teams that are desperate for wins. But this is on another level. UConn is DESPERATE here.

by cuse2012 on Feb 25, 2012 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

Hope they planned for Drummond this time

He was killing them last time until he twisted his ankle. This arena is pretty dumpy for a 1st Round NIT site.

by orangetundra on Feb 25, 2012 8:30 PM EST reply actions

He was

But he was also in foul trouble when that happened. All of the excuse making for that game, but he was going to have to sit for a while soon anyway.

by cuse2012 on Feb 25, 2012 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

He was very ineffective too

They should have left him on the bench. UConn can look like a final 4 team every game. Today, it is just a matter of which final four: NCAA or NIT.

by orangetundra on Feb 25, 2012 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I think they definitely look like a NCAA Final Four team tonight

Question is whether or not we will with not much to play for.

I kinda think UConn gets into the tourney either way, the bubble sucks and teams like Seton Hall are falling to Rutgers. But UConn is so bipolar, there’s no way they stay on the good side multiple games in a row. I don’t see them getting out of the first weekend.

I don’t care if he misses an open 3 with 15 seconds or so on the shot clock. It’s the threes he dribbles into early in the shot clock with a guy on him that irk me.

Why did Waiters give up two fouls at the end?

I thought the idea of fouling to negate the 5 second opportunity was good, but why did Waiters do it? I mean, two fouls from one half isn’t bad, but why not waste them on a bench player so Jim Burr doesn’t have the opportunity to wake up next half and hit him with two more quick to take him out of the game? Am I missing something?

MCW, Fair, Triche, Coleman and X-mas with an off season Melo transformation

Southerland, Keita, Grant and Cooney

All giving strong minutes off the bench. Not as dominant, but could grow into a strong team.

3-0 against white outs this season, good stuff

And G'town still sucks

Seton Hall crushes them then loses to Rutgers? Ouch

In hind sight I guess we didn't need MCW in the second half,

and I understand Boeheim’s plan is to probably test our guys that play the most minutes, but MCW was perfect.

He played 7 minutes and hit a 3, got a rebound, dished 2 assists, and got a steal.

I hope he sat for a good reason!

We are building his confidence

Scoop had his moments. Triche and Waiters had their moments. But those three are the best three on the court right now.

Awesome bounce back

After getting no minutes for a few weeks. Love him and Fair. Syracuse basketball is going to stay on top.

29-1.

It hasn’t come easy. I think that in most years we would be a 14-win conference team. We just don’t have that killer instinct. But credit to the team for overcoming their various weaknesses like no other team that I can remember. Historical season. Let’s hope there is more to come…

Way too close

The intensity seemed to stop all of a sudden. They shouldn’t have let them get that close. At least we won though which is of course the most important thing.

Time to finish it

Senior Day!!! Last game for at least Scoop/KJo and probably Fab/Dion. Some great names for Syracuse history. Wish Fab and Dion would stay; they could have their jerseys hanging from the Dome in 2 years.

Scoop shot too much, and when he wasn't open

We needed to get CJ the more ball in the 2nd half.

Disagree

Scoop has been clutch late in a lot of games lately. He has to take shots. Agree on CJ though, but he tends to just disappear. Good workman effort and again they found the points when necessary.

6-21 from scoop and dion

many forced shots, mostly from dion, cant keep doing this

I am the LAST person in the world to question Boeheim

But I can’t help but wonder if our first half brilliance was the result of playing all our guys, rather than just seven.

I think our first half brilliance

can be summed up with one thing—making shots and rebounding.

This team will go as far as its offense will take it. Shot selection, offensive rebounds, and just plain making the baskets. We get consistently good defense. It’s the offense that worries me.

Keita missed a zero footer last night in the second half that led to 4-5 point swing. Joseph and Triche each had a close shot roll out. We stopped going after the boards aggressively. Meanwhile, UConn smelled blood and turned up the intensity.

We have a great desperation instinct—I just wish we had the killer instinct to put these teams away before they make a run to give us desperation times.

Crap

When I added “and rebounding,” I forgot to change the “one thing.” Oops.

I would add "lack of turnovers"

Statistically, of course those are the reasons. But the team just seems to play looser with the shift changes.

by Mike I. on Feb 26, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

In other words

The cause and effect relationship may be wonky. Coach has been playing the reduced rotation in response to our being in close games. Perhaps we’ve been in close games because we’ve been playing the reduced rotation.

by Mike I. on Feb 26, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah Uconn really protected the ball in the 2nd half

Theyre playing for everything, at home. They were not going to roll over. And Syracuse still won.

What a solid team. So many ways to win.

I've been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower. But you make more money as a leader.

We're starting

to get some credit for our resiliancy from the media. Let’s face it, since we’ve been ranked so high for so long, we’ve basically been seeing everybody’s attempt at an A game. Everybody wants to be the team to knock off the #1 or #2 team in the country. And every time but one we’ve fought back and won the game no matter what. The fact is that in a few weeks we are going to have a bunch of close games. This team is capable of slowing things down and finding a way to win.

We are on an amazing run. Let’s appreciate this team for what they’ve accomplished and keep our hopes up for next month.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
