All signs point to the Trojans entering the season as the No. 1 team in the nation, pissed off after spending 2011 on probation and featuring Heisman Trophy candidate Matt Barkley and his band of five-star merry men.
As if that didn't sound menacing enough, a ghost from Syracuse Football Past has returned to haunt us once more. Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Tee Martin.
Tee Martin, the quarterback for Tennessee's 1998 national championship team who then played in the NFL and has spent the past 6 years coaching, has been named wide receivers coach at USC, Trojan head coach Lane Kiffin announced today (Feb. 23).
I don't need to tell you that Tennessee opened that 1998 championship campaign in Syracuse and I don't need to tell you that they won the game on a controversial 4th down pass interference call that allowed them to drive for a chipshot field goal to win 34-33.
You can actually watch the entire second half of that game on YouTube if you like. Ending aside, it was a great game (PI call at 1:12:58).
If we can possibly destroy USC's national title hopes AND get some karmic vengeance against Martin, well, that's the best of both worlds.
