No one needs an alternate uniform but let's face it, most teams these days have to have one.
Uniforms move the meter, as Colin Cowherd probably says before you throw up on your radio listening to him. Whether you hate anything that isn't the home-and-away combo that your team has, most everyone has a reaction one way or another to the many wonderful combinations the folks at Nike and Under Armour can come up with. And as we know, having a reaction is more important than what the reaction is.
Last night's platinum experiment being a key example.
So assuming our platinum days are officially over (which is not a solid assumption if you ask me), what is the next evolution of the "alternate" uniform for Syracuse Orange basketball.
Blue - The most logical choice beyond a white and orange uniform would be the blue uni. We've done it a few times but not since 2008. Mike Waters talked about them in his mailbag and mentioned how since we've lost the last two times we've worn them, they're probably not coming back anytime soon. I've seen enough people mention here and elsewhere that they actually like the blues and wouldn't mind seeing them again. Even if they only make up 20% of the fanbase, that's probably the most around of SU fans you'll ever get to agree on a non-orange and non-white uniform.
I wouldn't be opposed to seeing them again. As much as I'm an orange-first SU fan. I kinda like the last version and would be up for a rare appearance. Maybe we might want to break them out against Albany or someone like that so we can break the curse, though.
Considering the school's recent expunging of blue from the record when it comes to basketball, something tells me they're not thinking about it.
Gray - No.
Black - Syracuse never gave in to the whole black uniform craze from a few years ago. And I'm not saying that they should, but I'd be interested to at least see a mock-up for curiosity's sake. We saw what a black football uniform would look like back when we did that design contest and while it's not anything we need to be doing, it's a whole lot better than wearing gray again.
I don't really think anything else is up for serious conversation. The other way you could go is with a throwback alternate, which is much more up most of our alleys. An update version of the Syracuse Script uniform might do the seemingly-impossible...galvanize both young and old Syracuse fans at the same time. Invest your time there, if anything, future Syracuse alternate uniform designers.
