Pete Thamel Investigating Shabazz and Noel Recruitments

Seems to be that Thamel is got wind of some major rumors surrounding these two players. Jeff Goodman seems to agree with Thamel that something may be up with these two recruitments. Apparently there are a lot of rumors swirling about Shabazz, and some rumors have popped up with Noel after he reclassified. Thamel has apparently been asking around some of the entourage that surrounds both of these top recruits. There is no real news yet but Thamel did break open the whole UCF recruiting situation, and once one person starts to pursue a story other outlets like Yahoo! might pounce on it.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out especially after the Anthony Davis reports of asking for 200k last year. If anything comes of this I'm sure SU will cool on Noel, and even with just rumors it might severely effect his recruitment.

Do have a link you can post here? A small part of me wants Kentucky in the Final 4. Along w/ Cuse, obv. Anthony Davis asking for (getting??) 200K would complete the trifecta of vacated Final Fours for Calipari.

What a great way to ensure someone ends up at Kentucky

Spread a rumor. The classy schools back off. Go to Kentucky.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

honestly

in my opinion this can only be a good thing. i know boeheim and our program plays by the rules in recruiting, unlike calipari who has proven at the other schools he has coached at that he has bent the rules and got caught.

if this rumor is true, chances are- based on history, that UK is in the wrong and that would mean noel may be more likely to end up in orange. right?

Pete Thamel can investigate my ass.

Seriously, all he does is ruin people for the sake of being a holier-than-thou muckraker.

Ask the winless Binghamton Men’s Baseketball program.

The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.

I tried,

but they fired the secretary of the athletics department, too.

Ok Binghamton I understand.

Drug dealing, fake grades, etc.

But a high school recruit? When did he become the authority on proper recruiting? It seems like a really weird thing for a reporter to “investigate.”

If college basketball is his beat

Then it is definitely his business. And it might be high school recruits, but it is also multiple big business basketball programs.

Oh I didn't know that was his specific duty,

I assumed he was just a sports writer in general.

Makes a lot more sense now.

I thought he just woke up today and said, “Hey, I want to go see whats up over in that part of the sports universe, because the NBA is boring me and nobody likes baseball. Also, what is a hockey?”

Huh? Look at it from the perspective that he is investigating colleges and boosters who are recruiting the high school students. This he is qualified to do.

When you get paid for it

It makes you a journalist. Sounds like you’re in the wrong line of work.

Ok, from now on when I write shit that makes you all call me names I expect to get paid.

Binghamton had it coming

It was a complete mess not to mention a real pissing away of state tax dollars with that team.

by jimmiejones on Feb 21, 2012 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

Thamel

From what I’ve seen he is one of the best journalists out there. You can’t fault him for doing his job. If there are shenanigans with Noel wouldn’t you want that put out there? I’m guessing with Calipari involved that’s where the violations will be found if there are any.

by jimmiejones on Feb 21, 2012 6:06 PM EST reply actions

Chicago suntimes reported the 200k to davis story a while back, holding firm on their story and refusing to take any. Flack for niot taking the story off their website.

Honestly wouldnt shock me if any money did change hands, which is why i think uk fans are real nervous if they do win it all…they are wondering if it will all be stripped away. Someone always has dirt on someone else, usually money keeps everyone involved hush hush in situations like cam newton, but we also know what happened at smu where they couldnt stop the payments or the players would tell on themselves like we saw happen in the end.

You keep chanting one more year, I thought college was four years

by PointBlankPeriodPeriod on Feb 21, 2012 6:12 PM EST reply actions

IF?

Of course it will be stripped away. Hello? Calipari?
They made the bed, now they can get bedbugs.

by dacj501 on Feb 22, 2012 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

UK fans hate the story

However, if you go back a year, a story appeared in the DO that Davis’ commitment would cost 100K, so SU stopped recruiting him. Not coincidentally, the same day as the DO story appeared, a story appeared in the Duke student paper stating that Davis’ people (his father) made the same demand of Duke. They got out of his recruitment too and soon thereafter he became a UK commit. What amazes me is that ESPN hasn’t investigated it at all. It’s almost like they want to build UK up and then burst their bubble next week by actually pursuing this story.

The sources are vague generally

Mainly Twitter, and/or whispers on the internet. But Goodman at CBS seems to be saying that Thamel is looking into it.

by fatmofo55 on Feb 21, 2012 6:15 PM EST reply actions

Where on Earth are you seeing this?

The last 24 hours of Goodman’s Twitter say nothing of the sort.

by cuse2012 on Feb 21, 2012 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not doubting you since other people are talking about it

I just did a quick scan of that and his blog and can’t find anything

by cuse2012 on Feb 21, 2012 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Wow this blows my mind

I hope the NCAA hands down some serious punishment to the offenders… or at least the uninvolved players and coaches four years from now after Cal and his players have moved onto greener($) pastures.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

by ryanwk628 on Feb 21, 2012 6:18 PM EST reply actions

I Think

Thamel just REALLLLY wants to catch Calipari red handed, as ifhe has knowledge he is doing something illegal/against the rules, and he just needs a little bit more evidence before he nails him.

by fatmofo55 on Feb 21, 2012 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Or he's just reporting

It’s a crazy thought these days, since the 24/7 information world tells you to run with every story true or not. He probably heard something, is looking into it, and will report on it if he finds anything.

Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. That’s why you ask questions.

Slightly but not really off topic

But hot damn MSU is lighting it up on UK in the first half. Mizzou already lost tonight…if this holds up, we HAVE to win to prevent them putting Duke at #1. I mean, if all three were to lose they should keep them the same (maybe flip Duke and Mizzou), but you just know they’d put them at the top.

Well looks like it's about to be another vacated in the next few years win for Kentucky

Already hearing about how this is them “proving they’re number 1”. Not that I disagree they’re the best team right now, but when we have games like this against average teams it shows how we aren’t as good as Kentucky.

by cuse2012 on Feb 21, 2012 11:10 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I was thinking the same thing

When we have games like this, we start writing out own obits.

by Mike I. on Feb 21, 2012 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

Either way though when we win games like this

3 years from now they will still be on the books as wins…

by dacj501 on Feb 22, 2012 1:37 AM EST up reply actions

Noel is recruit X?

I’m assuming so as the writing styles are similar and both start with:

What’s up, world?

Recruit X Blog
http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/boys-basketball/tag/_/name/recruit-x

Noel Blog
http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/boys-basketball/post/_/id/3196/nerlens-notebook-kentucky-cuse-visits

Point is, “Recruit X” talks about recruiting violations and a coach offering him money so if Thamel’s sniffing around there’s good reason.

by Rich Pageant on Feb 22, 2012 2:22 PM EST reply actions

I'd say you're on to something...

This is the end of Noel’s blog. I wonder if he assumed people would immediately tie him to the Recruit X blog?

Well, that’s it for now, everyone.

Oh, you guys remember: If you don’t read it from me here on my blog, in my own words, then it’s not true.
Thanks again for reading, and I hope you guys come back for my next blog real soon.

IF, and this is 100% speculation, Recruit X is Noel, then it definitely seems like he could’ve been talking about going to bars in Syracuse (I remember there was at least one other recruit visiting with him).

by Syracuse is Oranges on Feb 23, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

Both could definitely fit the mold, but neither is a shocking development in the world of college athlete recruitment.

by Dan Lyons on Feb 23, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

the recruit x blog is a bit weird because most D1 coaches don’t offer over the phone. the danger is there for it to be recorded. it sounds fishy but the coach must be really brash
