Nerlens Noel to re-classify to 2012

http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=9&c=2&cid=1154998&nid=4293721&fhn=1

In a move that has been speculated since the beginning of the year, Nerlens Noel has decided to move from the class of 2013 to 2012. The news was first reported by ESPN.com.

By making the decision to move from the 2013 class to 2012, the five-star prospect now is in line to take over the top spot in the rankings. He was the No. 2 recruit in the country in 2013.

Recruiting wise Connecticut and Providence have been regular visitors to Noel's games. Along with those schools Kentucky, Syracuse, Florida, Georgetown, and North Carolina will all be contenders for Noel.

Star-divide

I know he was our #1 prospect for 2013 and we were recruiting him hard, but I think him coming out early hurts our chances. We should have a lot of depth at Center next season and I imagine he'd prefer to go to a school like Kentucky where he can play right away rather than compete with Fab, Christmas, Coleman, and Keita for playing time.

I just saw this over

on the “Mother Ship” as well. He doesn’t seem like a true center, rather a Carmelo type of player. In any event, it would be a good problem to have. ESPN can continue to say SU has so much depth for another season, so that is always good.

If he is able to play the 4 then I think we have a good chance

With Joseph gone, we could use the depth and size on the wings. He plans on visiting again Feb 11th for our home game against UConn. Who knows, a 30,000+ crowd and big win could potentially sway him.

I would like to see Rupp Arena one day

and then mock its capacity to all the fans there. 30K in the Dome > 23K in Rupp, if you want to play in front of crowds larger than the NBA gets.

Kentucky had higher attendance than SU last year

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/ncaa/pdfs/2011/2011+ncaa+mens+basketball+attendance+full+report

Averaged 23,606 to our 22,312

Also beat us in 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 … then I stopped looking. Looks like they beat us every single year in recent memory. So I don’t think you should be mocking very much.

while they do have a better average per game attendance, Cuse destroys them in overall tickets sold per season

Cuse sold 400,000 tickets for a couple seasons running

You keep chanting one more year, I thought college was four years

Cuse played more home games than Kentucky last season

Because, we don’t play any real road games. Didn’t you hear that before?

UK routinely leads the nation in attendence

But, at the same time, 23K is a sellout at Rupp. 22K is a borderline poor showing at the Dome.

Depends on how you perceive it

There are a ton of crummy seats people have to sit in to get to the 30K mark, and even then there’s a ton of open space and empty bleachers. In Rupp, there are less people but nothing is open and sound doesn’t escape like it can in the Dome.

Davis is going to be the #1 pick in the draft

With Coleman committing to Syracuse, Calipari still needs a defensive stud to replace Davis. If Noel stayed in the 2013 class, I could see Syracuse having a chance at him. With this move, Noel is all but guaranteed to be a Wildcat and will spend a year swatting shots in a weak SEC before leaving to enjoy his lottery pick millions.

Then again, who he picks probably has a ton to do with whether or not Fab declares for the draft this year

If Melo will, I’m sure the coaching staff has an idea already and knows they will need another big. They drop a note to Noel saying that he’ll be the starting center next season. Voila – reclassification.

Going to be hard to convince him he'd be better off at SU

when Calipari has a perfect model to compare him to in Anthony Davis. He gets a ton of recognition, probably will be first team All American, and then will get drafted in the top 3, probably number 1.

I would be ecstatic, but there’s no real way SU can compete with that. Plus he’ll probably make $500,000 from jsut committing to Kentucky.

But hey, 35k at the Dome may be our ace in the hole.

I'd say

no longer having to sleep with Laurie Fine is a huge selling point too.

Selling line #1

Don’t worry, ESPN would never say anything bad about Kentucky.

by orangetundra on Feb 2, 2012 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Jeff Borzello made a good point

Saying that Noel has the talent to start over all of them and Jimmy B has shown he’s not afraid to start freshman. Maybe if the kid shows something while he’s out there he would get the PT right away.

I don't know about that

How many times have you seen a Freshman have success playing Center in our zone?

by crouton on Feb 2, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah he'd start every game like Rak and Fab

And play 2 minutes a game.

I’m mostly kidding, because obviously Melo, Gerry and Forth did more than that their freshman years. But starting a freshman is different from playing a freshman.

Noel is 6'10", 205

According to his Scouts profile. He’s not going to be playing center. He’ll be a PF. KJ will be Gone, so CJ will be starting at SF next season. Rak isn’t exactly setting the BEast on fire in his freshman campaign. There’s no reason to think that he couldn’t start at PF next season.

But I will agree with most of the others. In a proabably one-and-done situation like this, the primary concern is going to be, “Where can I get a ton of burn right away and show NBA scouts what I’ve got”. Unfortunately in this case, that place is Kentucky.

Dont forget

competing with Coleman. I understand Noel might be the “better prospect” but not by a whole lot. Coleman seems to be much more polished offensively then Noel. So, its not that he’s just competing with Rak. I’m agreeing with everyone else. Reclassifying hurts our chances.

Someone needs to make a Noel high top haircut big head right now for the UConn game.

You'll excuse me

if I’m missing some sarcasm. But it was mentioned in another thread too. How could that be a recruiting violation? How can the NCAA govern what the student body does?

Other thing Noel is a NE kid

Might wanna stay int he Northeast, plus how often SU is on national TV could be a big selling point. If he thinks he’s one and done, he might stay in the East so his family can see him play.

by fatmofo55 on Feb 2, 2012 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Although I'm sure kentucky

would fly his family out first class and put them up 5 stars and give them a bag with 5k cash in it, if he went there.
