Syracuse 12 - Albany 7: Start Slow And Carry A Big Stick

Pretty sure that's what Roosevelt said.

Down 2-0 early, one couldn't help but wonder if the 2012 season was truly about to turn into the sum of all fears and that the uncertainly about the midfield, the inexperience in goal and the lack of production from our face-off unit was about to send us spiraling into a chaotic free-fall where everything we know about Syracuse lacrosse would become undone in a matter of minutes.

Then the No. 8 Syracuse Orange lacrosse team went on a 10-goal run over a 41-minute span, erasing all doubt and winning 12-7 over the Albany Great Danes.

Junior midfielder JoJo Marasco scored all three of his goals in the first half and added a fourth-quarter assist, junior middie Ryan Barber and sophomore attackman Derek Matlz scored two goals, and senior attackman Tommy Palasek had three assists for Syracuse (1-0).

Redshirt freshman midfielder Hakeen Lecky also nabbed his first career goal.

Starting goalie Matt Lerman was excellent in the pipes, recording six saves, and replacement Dominic Lamolinara held his own for most of the second half en route to ten saves.

Syracuse led 10-2 after three quarters and the Danes basically worked their way back against the second unit at the end.

Box score and more here.

Up next for the 1-0 Orange are the Army Black Knights, who visit the Dome on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and whom we still hate for beating us in the NCAA Tournament a few years back.

It’ll be interesting to see if SU moves up a spot in the polls this week. #5/5 Denver lost to unranked Ohio State and, even in Lacrosse, I don’t expect them to retain their high ranking after such a loss. #2/3 Duke lost to #9/9 ND. So my bet is that we stay at #8/7, Notre Dame moves up pretty far, possibly to 4th. The question will be how far Duke falls. May just be to 5th.

Provided they do a poll this week, which I’m only assuming.

Sure, polls are literally irrelevant at this point and, having no idea if Albany is any good, it’s hard to know if we are any good. But man, seeing SU at #8 gives me hives.

Both polls dropped both teams pretty solidly.

Duke dropped to 8th below Maryland which make sense, Denver dropped all the way to 11th. Notre Dame hopped up to 4th as predicted. So Syracuse is up to 6th in the media poll From 7th).

Coaches was a little weirder. Notre Dame leapfrogged all the way up to 2nd, UNC jumped Cornell to move to 3rd (no idea why, UNC’s had a few games where Cornell hasn’t but playing Mercer and Detroit Mercy is sort of like playing no one and they only beat Penn State by 4), Duke fell to 10th behind Villanova and Umass, Denver dropped to 12th, and Syracuse leapfrogged Maryland up to 6th (again, not really sure why, but I’ll take it!).
