This Day in 'Cuse History - February 16, 1987
Today we're going back to February 16, 1987. As we all know this was a pretty decent year for the Syracuse Orangemen.
On this day, Syracuse beat the Villanova Wildcats 96-82 in front of 13,678 fans at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Syracuse would improve to 21-4 and continue their march to the National Championship game.
Villanova started strong, taking a nine point lead at the half. However, Syracuse dominated the second half, outscoring Villanova 58-35 to finish with the 14 point victory.
The General led the 'Cuse with 27 points and 7 assists. Freshman Derrick Coleman poured in 20 with 11 boards and "DJ" Rony Seikaly had 20 points and 8 rebounds. Also, Stevie Thompson came off the bench to score 6 points and had 3 rebounds. The Wildcats were led by Doug West with 21 points.
SU's Howard Triche scored ten points and rumor has it he might be related in some way to current Orange Brandon Triche. Don't know if you knew that...no one ever mentions it.
It's all about the Orange!

don't forget Greg Monroe
With the “Pearl” bolting for the NBA, he stepped in nicely
Monroe, very good shooter as a two...
but it was sophomore Sherman Douglas at the point (most of the time).
I was a senior that year. Ah, memories. (including one where a very distracted Rony Seikaly almost murdered me with his Jeep on Comstock).
