Impression from Louisville game
Tough win, on the road, against the foe that always has our number, on a night when our two leaders were in foul trouble or didn't make a single shot. Don't care about 2nd chance point, or offensive struggles. We won in Louisville.
One thing that cannot be glossed over: Boeheim's coaching was phenomenal. Got Scoop out of there when he realized he had nothing. Let Triche and Waiters control the game. And most of all, changed defense assignments. In the 2nd half, when that one big man from Louisville got the ball at the top of the key, Melo would leap out to confront him. He would either go around Melo and score/get fouled, or he would dish it to a cutting wing under the basket. Lots of easy points.
At halftime, Boehiem changed the gameplan. Melo didn't step up. He allowed the big guy space to shoot a jumper and the guy bricked every one. It was brilliant. And a ballsy thing to do. If he makes that shot, everyone on that defense and Jimmy B looks stupid. One time in particular, he caught it, turned, pump-faked, then forced a pass that KrisJo picked off. It was weird to see - a guy has the ball wide open, at the foul line, and passes to a covered teammate. None of the talking heads will mention it but it won us the game.

Boeheim didn't change the gameplan
He said in the post-game interview that was the gameplan coming in, but the guys got a little excited and kept jumping out at him in the first half.
Oh I missed the postgame press conferences
Interesting. A marked difference between the halves, maybe coaches just reminded Melo and BMK about it
Bilas
and Raftery both pointed out how they were leaving that guy open in the zone. I really don’t care what the studio guys say (especially Hubert Davis and Digger. ugh, they stink),but the game guys definitely noticed. Hubert Davis said the weak link for Syracuse is foul shooting. Not rebounding or 3pt shooting.FT shooting. Did he get sent here from the 80s?
Bilas and Raftery...
are so great to watch. Don’t always agree with Bilas’ rankings but he’s a great color commentator
Bilas is great
Because he tells it like it is.
Bilas is great
Because he actually watches games and comes up with his own analysis. Unlike Hubert Davis, who recycles old talking points and Digger, who thinks Thad Matta is manning the middle of the zone.

Even 3 pt shooting
while wildly inconsistent, Cuse is still 4th in the Big East in 3 pt %, and 3rd in 3 pt made baskets. I think if Cuse cuts the second/third chance points in half, they will make their lives, and our lives, much less stressful
Oh and SU is shooting 70% from the line this year
Middle of the road in the Big East, but certainly not a liability like it’s been in the past. Hubert is a clown.
WHO’S THEIR GO TO GUY??? THEY CAN’T SHOOT FREE THROWS!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA IM SO FUNNY!!!!!!!!

What was Syracuse, 9 for 11 last night from the line?
Free throws were the difference in this game—a Syracuse win! Dion and Scoop need to be better from the line, but Triche is nearly automatic, I think Melo is a much better foul shooter than his percentage (60s) would indicate, and CJ Fair and Kris Jospeh are solid FT shooters. This team has some problems but that, remarkably for a Syracuse team, really isn’t one of them!
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

Melo hit both of a 1 and 1
Late in the game and it could have been the clutchest FT shooting all year, especially for a big man. That was so impressive. Dion on the other hand..
During one of Melo's FTs
They said he made like 9 consecutive free throws and I screamed at the TV ‘DONT JINX HIM’ His next free throw rolled around the rim 3 times before going in.
Maybe Boeheim saw the breakdown of our defense Luke Winn did the other day.
If I remember correctly Waiters and Triche are our best defensive guard combo and in this type of game, defense was obviously going to win the game.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Two things stand out to me:
If Louisville hits their free throws, they win this game with about 5-7 points to spare. That will be the talking point about this game and it’s technically true.
Also true about this game: if we shoot even remotely close to our season average from outside the paint we win this game going away (although I guess Louisville can say the same thing). This may have been the ugliest shooting performance I’ve ever seen from SU. I’m kinda curious where it stands historically for the program honestly.

Everyone, both here and on CC, are playing the 'if' game too much
There were so many things both teams could have done, and so many bogus fouls and non-calls that doing that just doesn’t make any sense.
Why not?
I see nothing wrong with pointing out how much went wrong with this game compared to how SU (and UL for that matter) normally play. Considering it was a 1-point game I think it certainly was a game of “ifs”.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
I believe it was the ESPN recap
where they said this was the “second-worst” three-point shooting performance in “15 years”… so I’d imagine that they must have been 1-fer something worse sometime in the late 90s. But that doesn’t speak to the atrocious 2-pt shooting % either…

Yea, it wasn't just 3's that were bad.
It was everything that wasn’t right at the rim.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Difference is
that our zone makes teams typically shoot worse from 3 point range. Someone should look at what teams usually shoot and what they shoot against us. Whereas our 3 point shooting might have been affected a little by their defense, but 1-15 is more of bad shooting, b/c typically you’ll at least hit a couple no matter how good the D is.
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

Someone did look at that earlier this season I think and found it to be the case.
The zone can lull teams into shooting lots of 3s, but when the zone is active teams shoot below their average percentage-wise from 3. So teams might be hitting plenty 3s against us, but they also tend to take way too many against us and miss plenty more.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Southerland
I think JB needs to take some action here on his confidence. Ordinarily, you build up the confidence by saying to keep shooting. But after all this time, it is beyond a slump.
JB needs to tell Southerland that he would be smart to hold off on shooting threes until after he makes a few non-threes in each game. Get your shooting rhythm first. Do a shot fake and drive. The team would rather the hit a 10 foot shoot than clank a three-pointer. Plus, he will be in rebounding position if it misses short.

Big play by Southerland...
was a 3pointer he missed short from the left corner, but he hustled his ass off, got his own rebound and dunked it. That is the kind of play that keeps you on the floor even if you are cold shooting the ball. And hopefully will reinvigorate his confidence.
He plays more this year
because he does more than just 3 point shooting, unlike last year. He’s actually trying to rebound and play D, which has led to more PT.

He still needs to keep taking the open looks
and he will – that O rebound dunk off his miss was great to see though. He definitely has the range – the shots have to fall eventually.
My girlfriend and I saw Mike Hopkins
mouth to him “great play” or something along those lines in a timeout that came shortly after that. It definitely didn’t go unnoticed and the added hustle and defensive effort this year are definitely keeping him on the floor.
