No. 2 Syracuse Orange (25-1) vs. No. 19 Louisville Cardinals (20-5) GameThread
Syracuse Orange at Louisville Cardinals, Feb 13, 2012 7:00 PM EST
Tied with No. 1 Kentucky for the best overall record in the nation, the Syracuse Orange hit the road tonight to clash with the Louisville Cardinals in a Big East Conference showdown.
As for the Cardinals, they've rebounded nicely after losing three of four conference games in January. After bowing to Marquette on the road (74-63) in the middle of the month, Louisville has logged six consecutive victories and is now 8-4 in conference play, which keeps it in the hunt for a top spot in the standings with the Big East Tournament just a few short weeks away. On Saturday, the team picked up a narrow 77-74 win over West Virginia in Morgantown, evening out the all-time series with the Mountaineers on the road at 3-3 in the process. Louisville has now won at least 20 games in 10 straight seasons, and head coach Rick Pitino has done it a total of 20 times during his illustrious career.
Not only do the Cardinals hold the overall lead in the series with Syracuse at 13-4, they've also been almost unbeatable at home in the relationship, posting seven wins in eight opportunities, not to mention winning seven straight matchups overall. The two teams are slated to close out the regular season against each other in early March.
Trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half on Saturday at West Virginia, the Cardinals turned up the defensive pressure after the break and held the hosts to just eight total field goals and escaped with the three- point win after Darryl Bryant missed a three-pointer at the end of regulation. Louisville had a balanced scoring attack that saw five players reach double figures, beginning with Kyle Kuric who tallied 17 points and knocked down a pair of crucial free throws in the final moments. Russ Smith pitched in with 16 points, Chris Smith and Wayne Blackshear 13 apiece and Peyton Siva finished with 10 points and five assists. Kuric, who had a huge game against Syracuse last season, leads four regulars in double figures with his 13.2 ppg, followed by Russ Smith (12.3 ppg), Chris Smith (10.5 ppg) and Gorgui Dieng (10.1 ppg), the latter also responsible for a team-best 9.2 rpg. Siva (8.5 ppg) has had his moments on offense, but it is his job to distribute the ball (131 assists) and also play tight defense (41 steals) and because of him and Russ Smith (55 steals), the Cardinals are averaging 9.4 thefts per game which ranks among the best in the nation.

Why does
no one discuss how bad the SEC is? Kentucky fans are acting like Kentucky is running through the Big Ten undefeated. Who has Florida beaten to deserve a ranking in the top 15? They lost to Rutgers.

Louisville is taking away
that foul line pass. They’re playing a 3-2. Cuse needs to work the ball into the corners and drive.
I miss the offense we had in the past years
Where we saw alot more pick and roll and had a big man that could take the ball. And beat his guy one on one and we consistently had a center that led the league in FG%. This half court offense is just passing it and hoping we somehow find an opening and if not they jump, decide not to shoot, get stuck in the air, and make an ugly pass.. then repeat.
F#$ing Patino and knowing how to teach his kids to beat the zone

Cuse
needs to overload the zone or go cross court. The Bigs have their guys sealed on all these plays.
Im so sick of the way refs call a game in todays basketball
They let them duke it out under the basket. But then even on that play where Siva got the foul. Im happy. But he was just going for the ball. Didnt really touch him that bad. Not compared to what they did to CJ under the basket. They dont call consistent games and its just hard to watch.

You keep chanting one more year, I thought college was four years
by PointBlankPeriodPeriod on Feb 13, 2012 7:30 PM EST reply actions
Thats just ridiculous
You know its not just a bunch of us fans complaining about the refs. 6-1 is awful. Its not like Lville is playing any different then they are. Just not being called. Hate Burr with a passion
If it were a little later in the game with a zone team getting 1 and the man team having 6
It could be believable. That Rutgers game last year was like that and even most RU fans said they were fair calls. Especially with the size differences. But with this game, there is ZERO difference on the amounts of contact on each end.
Damnit look
Both ESPN and Yahoo say that’s Joseph’s 2nd.
ESPN's box score
said KrisJo got his 2nd when it was just out of bounds on him. That’s why there was the confusion.

Disagree, Syracuse is getting better looks

If they called fouls oondrives
That was ugly
The refs were awful. Worst officiated game of the season, IMO. Refs are anticipating fouls.
Our offense was atrocious. Turnovers. Bad shots.
Their offense was atrocious for the most part. 10 minutes without a basket.
http://atlanticcoastconfidential.com/
Refs
This whole board is becoming one big rag on the refs. Want to know why the Cardinals shot so many more FTs? They went to the basket while Southerland and company are launching 23 footers. 33 percent of the Cuse shots are 3s. That’s terrible. If you go to the basket they call fouls. Period. There might have been two bad calls that half. Let’s be serious.
that
makes no sense. They don’t drive because they settle. not the other way around. What was Triche’s excuse for shooting a 25 footer one minute in?
Wide open.
Second shot he was clipped on the arm: no call. DVR is a frustrating thing.

taking a 25 footer
15 seconds into the shot clock is a bad shot in any form of basketball. I don’t care if Louisville had every defender in the paint.
Yeah, definitely drive in that case

Uh no
Not offensively. On defense yes, because if you have fouls you’re a little more careful, but guys don’t stop driving because fouls aren;t being called. That’s ludicrous. If that happens they won’t play. Flat out. Coaches don’t put up with that crap.
Agree w Krack
but credit Lville Dfense… they do play tough harrassing D. This is the stage of the season when our guys are working hard not to make mistakes and stay on Jimmy’s good side & stay in the game. Hope he begins to open up the rotation the remainder of the season. This has been a tough 4 game swing with not much time to prepare in between and the MCd’s have had to watch.
To be fair, in the last few games, I've been yelling at the top of my lungs for players to drive.
I haven’t caught a second of this game yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re doing the same this game.
That said, Big East refs do suck.
Let’s just call it both – we should be good enough to overcome the crappy refs, though.

But I dont think we are close to mentally tough enough to win a Title. Too many stupid plays. Too many plays with not enough effort. To many times letting a team back in when they are on the ropes. The killer instinct doesnt show up as much as it should for the number 2 team in the country.
Every game is a worst game for kjo....
He’s really not that good
KJo sat too long and got cold
That’s what happens when you get 4 fouls early in the second half.

Here it is.
Is this Joseph time? Let’s get into the lane. Please for the love of god don’t settle for a 3 unless it’s with dribble drive.
I know Triche has had a crap game
But I LOVE seeing him in at the end of the game over Scoop. Scoop played well at the end against Uconn. But that happens once every 10 games. I trust Triche way more.
Hooboy. Need a bucket.
I say ball screen with Dion, kick out Kjo or Triche for a mid range jumper if Waiters doesn’t get it. Or, flash CJ to that short corner.

WOW
that my friends is a gut check down 5, crowd goign nuts 3 minutes to go against a team you never beat. GREAT WIN.
You know, we played a crap game
But we beat a good team that we never beat in their house. It’s a good day, and it says a lot about this team. A win is a win is a win.
If you're going to be stupid, you're going to have to be tough
It's ugly
but we made it through Georgetown, UConn, and Louisville in 6 days
That too
Honestly, wouldn’t you have signed up for a 3-1 record for these last ten games?
When Higgins and Burr are reffing your games
It’s somehow possible
We've now beaten all 15 Big East foes in my 4 years here
Was only 13 of them 6 weeks ago. That much is nice. But I’m not taking anything from this game for either team. That wasn’t a game. AWFUL calls all around. There wasn’t one good one.
Missed 29 of 31 outside the paint? Really?

yup
to win on a night when you play a horrible offensive game is impressive. To win on the road and do it is what makes great teams. Fab Melo, you sir, can take a bow.
Cuse
one win or (Lville and USF loss) from clinching a double bye.
Well
if Cuse loses to Rutgers and South Florida then don’t deserve anything anyways.
to beat the #18
ranked team on their floor after they’ve won the past 7 meetings? That shows me how good they are. They overcame a horrendous shooting night to win. Impressed.
No i agree with that but 1 for 30 outside the paint scares me but you are right about the win overall
How about how we shot from outside Saturday?
These nights happen. Like I said, to blow that 8 point lead late against a team that has owned you, in their building, shows good mental toughness.
I’ll take the W. This was a very hard week, to step up and win this at the end was very nice. They have until Sunday, they’ll hear plenty about that shooting. But it’s a win.
They've played
two ridiculous bad offenseive games .Both on the road in a hostile environment. Yes the 3 point shooting is a huge concern, but the way they played down the stretch showed a lot. If they go 1 for 30 outside the paint in a sweet 16 game or later they will lose, but I find it an aberration myself.
Coached by
a probable HOF coach (as skeevy as he is). This was a good win. It’ll help us next month when we need tough wins. This team is tougher than almost any other team we’ve seen.
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
by PoetryInMoten on Feb 13, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions
How bad they are?
Pretty sure that wining an un-win able game speaks to how good they are. Show me another team that wins a game going 2 for 31 outside the paint.

also considering
they’ve only lost ONE game, and it was on the road, without arguably our best/most important player and was one of the worst refereed games Ive seen, it’s hard for me to say they are “bad.”
by GoBillsGoCuse on Feb 13, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions
I didn't check the Coaches Poll today
Is Burr getting any first place votes yet? I don’t think he’s lost all year
Plenty of teams have won national championships playing a couple games like this in the tourney
The key is having the ability to win them, whether you’re playing from behind, you blow a lead like we did, etc. It’s being able to say “we fucking suck tonight, but I want this win”. Can’t expect to win every night like this, but I think winning after blowing the late 8 point lead, on the road, shows some damn good mental toughness.
THAT'S what the great teams do
win the game DESPITE awful officiating.
And horrible outside shooting.
And over-the-backs.
And getting beat on the boards (again).
Against a top 25 team.
If you don’t think this is a championship-caliber team, I don’t know what to tell you.

Try telling UK fans that.
That barely beat a average Vandy team and we beat a solid Louisville team and they say we are the team that sucks…LOL love UK fans
by Jordan Selmer on Feb 13, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions
not to defend UK
but they looked a lot better in beating the ’Ville. of course, louisville was seriously banged up and playing in Rupp Still a HUGE win for the Orange. They are winning games and not playing well… Although it is about time they start playing better if they really are going to make a run in the big tourney.
Louisville also didn't have
Benahan when UK played them. Louisville is a much better team with this kid.
You know what, replace horrible with non-existent
that’d be a more accurate description of our outside shooting.
I'd take non-existent outside shooting
over the crap that we launched tonight. Southerland needs to lose the right to shoot 3’s. At least he hustled tonight on the offensive boards and made some great shots inside the arc/in the paint.

Cusee has a great team
up 8, down 3 and they never gave up

Joseph was TERRIBLE, Scoop wasn’t much better. And Southerland gave them some good minutes. I really hope he attacks the glass like that the rest of the year.
joseph gave away the ball out of bounds, then gets it back on a pass from dieng...that was huggggge

This game was very similar to West Virginia
sloppy ugly play, followed by some good defensive stretches…Dion missing clutch free throws at the end…barely escape with a win at the buzzer
So after this game
Dion is staying, and Fab is gone.
I hope Musburger isn't announcing the game against Rutgers Saturday
or else we’ll hear “honey badger” 50 times upon seeing that comment

After watching this game
I think it’s fair to say that with Fab, we would have won the Notre Dame game. BRING IT COOLEY.
Scoop makes a couple of those runners...
And maybe ONE GOD DAMN THREE GOES IN….
Syracuse leads the whole game and wins by 8 or so.
Good win though, Louisville is a very good team.
Honestly the fact that they made 4 more threes
had more foul shots and we still won, I’d say this might be a building block.
Like Boehiem said
these are the games that make you better
Well... 1.1 seconds wasn't going to work for Louisville
Pitino needs 15 seconds to work his magic.

Fab
Wasn’t his best game, but he went 37 minutes with only 2 fouls. Not getting that many fouls is awesome, and so is his fitness. Dude could barely go 5 straight minutes last year, now he’s going full speed for 37 minutes after the week we’ve just had (plus some late nights at Chuck’s). Good stuff.
