No. 2 Syracuse Orange (25-1) vs. No. 19 Louisville Cardinals (20-5) GameThread

Syracuse Orange at Louisville Cardinals, Feb 13, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Tied with No. 1 Kentucky for the best overall record in the nation, the Syracuse Orange hit the road tonight to clash with the Louisville Cardinals in a Big East Conference showdown.

As for the Cardinals, they've rebounded nicely after losing three of four conference games in January. After bowing to Marquette on the road (74-63) in the middle of the month, Louisville has logged six consecutive victories and is now 8-4 in conference play, which keeps it in the hunt for a top spot in the standings with the Big East Tournament just a few short weeks away. On Saturday, the team picked up a narrow 77-74 win over West Virginia in Morgantown, evening out the all-time series with the Mountaineers on the road at 3-3 in the process. Louisville has now won at least 20 games in 10 straight seasons, and head coach Rick Pitino has done it a total of 20 times during his illustrious career.

Not only do the Cardinals hold the overall lead in the series with Syracuse at 13-4, they've also been almost unbeatable at home in the relationship, posting seven wins in eight opportunities, not to mention winning seven straight matchups overall. The two teams are slated to close out the regular season against each other in early March.

Trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half on Saturday at West Virginia, the Cardinals turned up the defensive pressure after the break and held the hosts to just eight total field goals and escaped with the three- point win after Darryl Bryant missed a three-pointer at the end of regulation. Louisville had a balanced scoring attack that saw five players reach double figures, beginning with Kyle Kuric who tallied 17 points and knocked down a pair of crucial free throws in the final moments. Russ Smith pitched in with 16 points, Chris Smith and Wayne Blackshear 13 apiece and Peyton Siva finished with 10 points and five assists. Kuric, who had a huge game against Syracuse last season, leads four regulars in double figures with his 13.2 ppg, followed by Russ Smith (12.3 ppg), Chris Smith (10.5 ppg) and Gorgui Dieng (10.1 ppg), the latter also responsible for a team-best 9.2 rpg. Siva (8.5 ppg) has had his moments on offense, but it is his job to distribute the ball (131 assists) and also play tight defense (41 steals) and because of him and Russ Smith (55 steals), the Cardinals are averaging 9.4 thefts per game which ranks among the best in the nation.

I miss the offense we had in the past years

Where we saw alot more pick and roll and had a big man that could take the ball. And beat his guy one on one and we consistently had a center that led the league in FG%. This half court offense is just passing it and hoping we somehow find an opening and if not they jump, decide not to shoot, get stuck in the air, and make an ugly pass.. then repeat.

If it were a little later in the game with a zone team getting 1 and the man team having 6

It could be believable. That Rutgers game last year was like that and even most RU fans said they were fair calls. Especially with the size differences. But with this game, there is ZERO difference on the amounts of contact on each end.

Our offense was atrocious. Turnovers. Bad shots.

Their offense was atrocious for the most part. 10 minutes without a basket.

Refs

This whole board is becoming one big rag on the refs. Want to know why the Cardinals shot so many more FTs? They went to the basket while Southerland and company are launching 23 footers. 33 percent of the Cuse shots are 3s. That’s terrible. If you go to the basket they call fouls. Period. There might have been two bad calls that half. Let’s be serious.

by clibs1 on Feb 13, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

How about how we shot from outside Saturday?

These nights happen. Like I said, to blow that 8 point lead late against a team that has owned you, in their building, shows good mental toughness.

I’ll take the W. This was a very hard week, to step up and win this at the end was very nice. They have until Sunday, they’ll hear plenty about that shooting. But it’s a win.

by cuse2012 on Feb 13, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

They've played

two ridiculous bad offenseive games .Both on the road in a hostile environment. Yes the 3 point shooting is a huge concern, but the way they played down the stretch showed a lot. If they go 1 for 30 outside the paint in a sweet 16 game or later they will lose, but I find it an aberration myself.

by krackatoan on Feb 13, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Plenty of teams have won national championships playing a couple games like this in the tourney

The key is having the ability to win them, whether you’re playing from behind, you blow a lead like we did, etc. It’s being able to say “we fucking suck tonight, but I want this win”. Can’t expect to win every night like this, but I think winning after blowing the late 8 point lead, on the road, shows some damn good mental toughness.

So after this game

Dion is staying, and Fab is gone.

I hope Musburger isn't announcing the game against Rutgers Saturday

or else we’ll hear “honey badger” 50 times upon seeing that comment

* Sunday

And the Sunday afternoon ESPN announcer is typically Bob Wischusen.

Go Cuse!
....And Georgetown still sucks!

After watching this game

I think it’s fair to say that with Fab, we would have won the Notre Dame game. BRING IT COOLEY.

Scoop makes a couple of those runners...

And maybe ONE GOD DAMN THREE GOES IN….

Syracuse leads the whole game and wins by 8 or so.

Good win though, Louisville is a very good team.

Honestly the fact that they made 4 more threes

had more foul shots and we still won, I’d say this might be a building block.

Fab

Wasn’t his best game, but he went 37 minutes with only 2 fouls. Not getting that many fouls is awesome, and so is his fitness. Dude could barely go 5 straight minutes last year, now he’s going full speed for 37 minutes after the week we’ve just had (plus some late nights at Chuck’s). Good stuff.
