The Difference Between HCDM and his predecessors

The primary difference between HCDM and his predecessors is the willingness to change. If you recall, Coach P was highly loyal (scary loyal) to his assistants and philosophies. G-Rob was just clueless. I guess he was loyal to that. In contrast, HCDM has fired assistants.

Now it looks like he is ready to embrace the more interesting style of offense that myself and a few others (Kotite4ever) have been dying for. http://blog.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2012/02/syracuse_university_football_c_38.html

Marrone has studied offenses run by teams such as Toledo and Kansas State that have given the Orange defense trouble and believes one answer lies in designed quarterback runs.

“That is where a lot of the big plays are coming from,” he said. “You have to defend the quarterback runs as well as the quarterback passing. That’s something I think we want to do, is get our quarterback more involved in our running game, because now you can create more misdirection, you can create more gap assignment on the defense, and now you can also handle the rush a little better.”

I love it. You don't need McNabb to use the QB as a running weapon. The FCS schools have given our defense trouble with it. If it moves the ball, who cares what it is called...

Two other items about the latest article that realy piqued my interest

Marrone has determined to ditch all distractions such as goodwill bus tours and signing day receptions for season ticket-holders and concentrate strictly on coaching the team.

Marrone will coach SU’s special teams himself

Very interesting. Answers some questions I had at least.

Yeah

I don’t mind him coaching special teams, really. If Frank Beamer can do it…

This article also seems to suggest

Marrone is a learning computer, possibly sent from the future. Im not sure.

He's got QBs waiting in the wings that are

perfect for that

and I think this year wether he likes the idea or not

Some of them are going to get some snaps. Hes got to start warming up Nassibs replacement at this point, especially is Nassib regresses or cant move the offense forward with his plan.

Agreed

I remain bummed it didn’t happen last year.

Backup QBs are dropping like flies

We will have to see if Hunt remains with the team, and Im pretty sure Johnny Miller is gone.

It seems like it will be Broyld vs Kinder this year for the backup spot, Im pretty sure Loeb’s last year of eligibility is this year as well? I know this is his senior year, but he didnt play his freshman year, but Ive never heard if he redshirted.

by Pinker on Feb 12, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

It listed last year as his junior year on SUAthletics.com

so this would be his Senior year. However, he may be a redshirt, as it lists his freshman year as DNP.

Loeb is a year behind Nassib as far as eligibility remaining. He would have a red shirt year available after Nassib is gone if granted – afaik, but pretty certain.

Well said, I agree

A scheme that involves the QB running is such a weapon, and Marrone willingness to adapt is refreshing. I confess I’m primarily a Michigan football fan, so I’ve seen this plenty the last few years. Play action passing is so much more effective when all it takes is a stutter step forward by the quarterback to draw the safeties in. Not every mobile quarterback is Denard Robinson, but they don’t have to be. Effective mobile QB operations have been run with all kinds of players (looking at you, Tate Forcier) – confident HCDM can get it right.

It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

by Girardi Party on Feb 13, 2012 12:39 AM EST reply actions

That's the thing

It’s not like Toledo, Colgate, Northwestern, and Kansas State had McNabb. So, instead of duplicating what Michigan has been doing offensively (or did under Rich Rod), it makes a lot of sense to try to do what these other schools did with more ordinary athletes.

I couldn't be more excited about this running with the QB more!

And agree with most of what everyone has said that you don’ t need D. Robinson to run what it sounds like HCDM wants. On that note I absolutely don’t think Nassib will excel in that type of QB play. Which is fine, I don’t think it is his skill set. SU has some players that can run that type of offense. Hunt will be back and is my pick for getting a good look at being the QB this year. Great stuff ezcuse, thanks for posting.

Correct me if I'm wrong but....

….wasn’t Nassib the guy they brought into to run the ball when Paulus was playing that one year? Never quite understood his fear of the line of scrimmage.

at the time

he was probably our best runner

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

Im all for starting a QB that can run

and if you look at the guys we have brought in, its been obvious that was the plan. I just dont want to see us doing it at the expense of a passing game. If we get a reputation for that kind of system it becomes very hard to get decent WRs because they want to catch, not block. Ask VT. (unless we pull a NE and line TEs up wide with a little slot WR to keep the LBs from cheating up, that might work). Basically, Id take 1 decent one dimensional QB and a Mike Williams type WR over a one dimensional running QB, because its run-pass vs run-run. The second option is much easier to defend. Hopefully this is why he has been holding these guys back instead of pulling a Coach P and throwing Joe Fields in there on day one… hes trying to develop them first.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

not really a fan of anyone running the ball, QB or otherwise

history notwithstanding, we play in a dome and most of our non-conference games are in places that will not have terrible weather in college football season. I’d love to see a crazy Mike Leach-esque pass-wacky offense.

He's just figuring this out?

The zone-read option has been killing it in college football for like the last 5 years.

Look at who he has brought in

Hes done great things with Nassib who was an after thought QB from a lame duck class. But HIS guys are Kinder, Hunt, and AB

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

and Miller don't forget MILLER!!!! hahahaha! Funny there hasn't been a peep about him since his arrest.

Miller was pretty highly thought of before his should injury. Could have been a good one for CUSE. IF……. ps. I agree with ya ryanwk628 it has been clear to me what HCDM “wanted” from the QB position I think he just had to/wanted to wait until one of “his” QBs was ready.
