2012-2013 Hoops Schedule

We've all talked ad nausea about how we think the Big East is going to spite us (and Pitt) next year in regards to the football schedule. But we haven't mentioned the potential basketball schedule. For us, attendance wise, hoops is our money maker. The fans come out in droves. We represent well and when ESPN (or CBS) shows the dome filled with 30K + fans, it's a huge recruiting tool.

My question to you, fellow Nunesers, what's to stop the Big East schedule gods from giving us a less than favorable hoops schedule as well?

Here is one example of how I see us being screwed a bit. First, a note on the Home and Homes. Since West Virginia is out, there would be four H-H match-ups next year instead of three., assuming the Big East sticks with 18 conference games.

Home Away

Providence H-H Providence

South Florida H-H South Florida

DePaul H-H DePaul

Pittsburgh H-H Pittsburgh

St John's Georgetown

Rutgers Villanova

Seton Hall UConn

Cincinnati Notre Dame

Marquette Louisiville

Obviously, this is an extreme schedule, but it is certainly feasible. We would get home and homes with the 3 "Bottom Feeders" (I understand USF is having a great season, but really....) plus fellow defector Pitt. All 3 NYC area schools would come to us, so we wouldn't be able to have an appearance in the NYC area. Road games at GTown, Nova, UConn, ND and Louisville - all games that could garner a 30K + attendance mark. And home games with Cincy and Marquette - Would anyone really get up for those games?

Now again, this is an extreme schedule. But would any of you be shocked if something similar to this is released next summer? I sure has hell wouldn't.

Please STOP the insanity

You miss the fundamental scheduling concept. In the BIg East, preseason the coaches are polled and the league is separated into competitive groups. The H/H are determined by playing 2 in your group and another; with some eye on team/TV preferences (rivalries). This season UConn, SU, Marquette, and GTown were voted by coaches in the top 4… So we got H/H with 2 of these. This concept is not perfect, but theres a process which includes people in the know to attempt to make schedules balanced & competitive; albeit there is some “parity” provoking features blended in… weaker teams will not get 2 H/H series with the top teams in the league, but teams of their perceived competitive balance. Thats the gist I believe. I also do believe that ESPN poured gasoline on the ashes of college athletics this fall, and that the media loves to diss Jim Boeheim because he was coaching 20 win seasons before many were born; BUT there is no “right wing conspiracy” against SU Hoops. Lets enjoy one of our best seasons ever and root to see the Orange in New Orleans. We’ve been there before.

i dont understand the "away" column?

i thought syracuse only plays home games?

in all seriousness, i am not worried about the schedule. syracuse is too much of a draw for the NYC area schools so I assume they want to play us

Should be interesting

How they handle 15 teams with WV gone. Even if they convince Boise for football, that does nothing for hoops. That means every week some team only plays 1 game. Plus, you don’t get that easy 4 team grouping. I say the schedule will be a huge mess, though they should just drop UConn since they are not tourney eligible (joke).

As another point, SU traditionally ends up with home and home against 2 really good (top 25) teams in the BE scheme. I think this is part of the non-conf soft scheduling. This year should have been a gauntlet with UConn and Louisville twice. Just didn’t work out that way.

Remember...

…ESPN and CBS plays a role in the home and home match-ups as well. So I don’t think you guys can get overly screwed. I do think Cuse and Pitt will get screwed a little bit. Like when BC got it’s STJ game moved out of the Garden in the last season.

What if...

The Big East invites St. Bonaventure or Niagara for a one year basketball only membership to make it 16 teams. Or the Big East drops DePaul for one year, (double secret probabtion) to make it 14 teams.

The problem with the BE trying to hose Orange basketball

Is that we’re one of the primary revenue drivers for the conference. They can send the football team to Boise without hurting Big East revenues much, but giving us dull match-ups for home & homes and making sure we have no conference games in NYC / Philly / DC would only hurt the Big East on TV.

well we're safe then

because the Big Est management would never do something stupid and self defeating…

I don't think the double games

will be as bad as above. But you likely won’t get the venues you want. Probably St. John’s at the Dome and maybe the Hall there too. Double games with Louisville and Pitt, then maybe a DePaul or South Florida. Where you play doesn’e hurt TV. So if TV has an interest in STJ / Cuse at the Garden, it will have the same interest in the Dome. I don’t think it will be too bad for you guys. It will be the last year in the league though so you may get home and home with G’Town just because ESPN would love that.

This has no logic to it,

But I do think the BE will screw us where it can. Even if we play SJU/SHU/Rut in the Dome, it will be all over the NYC tv markets. Schedules are made according to projected finish so like teams can play h/h. That’s why we play UConn/UL twice. They were supposed to be most like us. Otherwise the shedules will continue.

i would play depaul, south florida, providence...

…and a still very potentially down pitt team 2x every year if possible. Should win at least 7 of 8.

Winning recruits best. If we’re ranked 1-3 in the nation, people will come.

Agree that Fab very well might be leaving. Patrick Ewing-like NBA jump shooting the other day??

Not sure i agree with whomever suggested redshirting Keita. Also think Waiters might go but don’t think he should.

Where's Memphis?

Everything I’ve seen about it states they’ll be in for all sports next year.

We’ll also get a home and home with Rutgers next year. Just because they want to send us to Jersey as punishment.

Memphis is 2013-2014 academic year

CUSA has a minimum 1-year wait unless the FedEx guy wants to eat all fees from being sued, ala WVU.

Wouldn't a schedule like this

Defeat the purpose of effing us over? Sure, we wouldn’t get the revenues and audience for big games, but a schedule designed like the one above would hand us the league title.

By giving us big games on national television at home and away, we’re tested every week and there’s a better likelihood we lose more games. The league will control what they can, and what they can (and will) hand us are another round of home-and-homes with UConn, L’ville in all likelihood.
