As The Big East Turns: West Virginia Out The Door, Boise Stepping Through Early?
And so, all eyes are on the West Virginia Mountaineers and whether or not they find a way to wrangle out of the Big East in 2012. Do that and the pieces start falling into place.
According to the Charleston (WV) Daily Mail, it's a done deal.
A formal announcement could be made as early as Friday. That is also when the Big 12 is set to release its 2012 conference football schedule, media outlets reported Thursday.
The Big East will make about $20 million from the resolution, with WVU paying $11 million.
It had been thought that WVU would have to find a replacement for themselves as part of the deal but that apparently isn't an issue now.
That said, it was reported Thursday that Boise State has been in touch with the WAC about possibly stowing its non-football sports there if it needs to make a break for the Big East ahead of schedule.
Of course, if the Big East can't replace WVU, that begs a ton of questions, namely how will the Syracuse Orange and Pittsburgh Panthers react? Will they stick around for 2012? Will they make a move to lock in a departure in 2013?
One thing's for sure, neither school will hesitate to leave if given the opportunity. Regardless of what ESPN's Heather Dinich thinks.
This is purely a guess, but I'll predict the ACC welcomes Pitt and Syracuse in 2013 -- especially if WVU gets its way in 2012. Even if West Virginia leaves this fall, I think Pitt and Syracuse would feel bound by a moral obligation not to bolt without fulfilling at least part of the Big East's required 27-month notification period.
BHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

how does that $20 million get divvied up?
If SU and Pitt don’t get their share of the $20 million, I’d sue immediately for release in 2013, say that based on WVU the buyout should only be $10 million, and then credit the 3 or so million they should have gotten from WVU out of that.
Bing, bang boom – $7 million to walk out the door and join the ACC in 2013.
Agreed.
If SU gets no money from that there should be some serious thought put into suing. We already have been disallowed from voting on goins-on, but are expected to sit around for 3 years. Pitt and SU would have a case on their hands.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
Also if we're down to $14 million for SU-PITT combined, ACC should be able to throw in half, bringing us down to just $3.5 million
if we passed the hat around the dome, at 30k fans, that’s just $116.66 per person.
we can call it $116.66 to freedom!
Breach of Contract
If Syracuse and Pitt were not consulted on this agreement they have a pretty clear case for breach of contract as they were not consulted on somthing that will impact scheduling and revinue and the “detrimental loss of a rival”. The big east breached the contract with its members and thus Pitt and Syracuse should be able to leave for 2012 and not even pay the initial exit fee. forget passing the hat.
The Dome should pass the hat tonight.
I’ll personally throw in $50
The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.
I'd wait until tomorrow
When there are 30,000+ there.
Great idea.

Oh, look at me! I'm making people happy. I'm the magical man from. Happyland in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Laaane! Oh, by the way, I was being sarcastic.
I don't know about SU
And judging by this I would say they don’t feel any moral obligation to the Big East. But I’m almost positive Steve Pederson is readying the torches and pitchforks for his march to Providence

And as for the 27 month wait
Haven’t we already fulfilled part of it? I mean, it’ll be 10 months in July when we leave.

Dinich is right, but not about the Moral Obligation
No “moral obligation” is keeping Syracuse in the Big East next year. Convenience and economics, however, are.
The Big XII NEEDED West Virginia to join next academic year in order to maintain their 10-team round-robin schedule for their TV partners. With a huge TV negotiation set to begin this summer, Neinas and Co. had to have their house in order. That’s why the conference passing the collection plate to the tune of One Million per school to make this happen.
Similarly, the Big East now NEEDS Boise to prevent itself from becoming a mockery of the joke it’s already become. Home-and-home games to fill out the conference schedule? I wouldn’t be at all suprised if the Big East endorses those nine million-dollar checks directly over to the MWC to get Boise in the fold a year early.
The ACC, however, is just fine. They have a atheltic schedule that works for them as presently constituted, and have already agreed to an extention of the ESPN deal that will give each school a small per-year bump on revenue. They don’t need ‘Cuse or Pitt next year. There’s no need to go out of the way and spend extra money to make this move happen sooner than it needs to.
But I do agree that we’ll be on the move in 2013, one year earlier than the original 27-month waiting period would have held us to. With six schools signed up to join the conference by that year, Cuse and Pitt would be teams 12 and 13. Unless the Big East wants 12 teams to try to hold a championship game in 2013, which they won’t be able to do again until 2015 when Navy joins, 13 teams is a bit unweildy (just ask the SEC and Missouri.) Also, the financial penalty will be much less severe for moving next year than trying to bolt now. With the original buy-out set at $5M, and WV paying out $20, with some of that probably moving on to help another school come in early, I can’t imagine either ’Cuse or Pitt will be on the hook for more than $7.5M, maybe $10M topps.
Of all the crap writing at ESPN
that may be the single dumbest line I’ve ever read. There’s no way in the world this woman is qualified to write a blog about college sports.
One thing I learned in business and politics
When all is quiet is when you wonder what’s really going on. SU and Pitt (mostly) haven’t really passed along any information from “unnamed sources.” Both schools weren’t allowed to participate in the TCU departure, the WVU legal issues, and the addition of new schools.
Notice that the ACC hasn’t published their 2012-13 schedules yet.
Notice how SU and Pitt haven’t said much about WVU (but probably called in some congrats). BTW, I’m bummed that a long history of football with WVU is gone.
Somethings happening. We’ll see.
Go Cuse. Go Utes. Go Kings (hockey version). Go Panthers (hockey version). Go Marlins. Go Dodgers. I despise the NFL and NBA, so don't bore me.
the short straw
I bet it stinks as a sportswriter at espn to get notified that you drew the short straw and must blog about the big east. remember the fool they had covering it last year? and they never picked someone from the northeast, it was always someone from the western fringe of the conference, someone devoid of historical reference or familiarity with the conference. Really, we should pity these poor saps.
Orange you glad it's not football season?
