Orange Football Recruiting 2012: "My God, its full of stars.."
So there we have it. Outside of any possible stragglers, we have completed our recruiting odyssey for the 2012 year. With it comes fresh hope and promise that these young men will continue to lead the program in the right direction under the watchful, Dove bar-loving eyes of Coach Marrone and staff. So how did we do as per the scouting services?

Well, not too bad as things go in my opinion.
We landed a a true 4 star recruit (Tight End Ron Thompson and previous recruit Ashton Broyld was upgraded after a great year at Milford) and adding a whole host of other 3 star players. The total count is:
4 Star:2
3 Star: 11
2 Star: 9
And the best way to see how we are trending is always to look at how we did last year. Of course, if we got 5-7 (or worse, God Forbid, we may not be able to expect we do as well next year on the recruiting trail.
Last year we had 24 recruits come in (we didnt get Tyree Smallwood, and A. Broyld is in this year's class)
4 Star:0
3 Star: 10
2 Star: 14
Over all, Id say things are looking up. This is the recruiting class I think we wanted to get us back on track.
Here is to a great year on the gridiron for the Orange!

I'll take it.
I think the JuCo guys are gonna be huge, along with Morgan and Thompson for making an impact this year. And I think Morris and Broyld will be stars down the road.
I won’t be satisfied until we land a big recruit like Jarron Jones though.

You read my mind.
I was thinking of making a post about how this year breaks down compared to last year, but you beat me to it. And you added a poll, which is always more fun!

The Poll widget is awesome!

Good recruiting class
But the guys we lost down the stretch take away something. Kind of like scoring the touchdown, but then missing the extra-point (we never do that, fortunately). Better than a field goal… but the three that got away really hurt. Also disappointed that we could not make a better dent on the Rutgers guys with Schiano leaving. The cupboard is pretty stocked down there, so it’s not like the new guy is inheriting a bad team. Hopefully, he will Kragthorpe.

While I understand that mentality
I disagree. Yes, we lost Owens, Glanton, and Whitehurst down the stretch, and that sucks. But we also added Josh Manley, Myles Gilliard, and a bunch of the solid JUCO DL’s. The belief that we suddenly tanked in the stretch run of recruiting is a bit short sighted, I think.

Why exactly wouldn't I vote
for the last option?
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
On my exams
There’s always a fun multiple choice question. I fashion my polls the same way?
Im pretty sure I got to the end of the choices and said…now whats my choice?
All respect to Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and all the prep sports hawks blogging from their mother's basement but...
Recruiting rankings mean almost jack shit to me. Good coaches make good players. Recruiting season to me is the time when relevant hoops talk is gleefully bounced by gap-toothed Southerners who think the sun rises and sets with SEC football.
I’ll be impressed when I see them on the field. All the stars indicate is potential that needs to be realized. I’d rather have 20 2-star recruits who all perform to the max of their ability than 10 4 stars who try to rest on their laurals.
It’s nice to see better recruiting ‘stats’, but i’m waiting to see if it translates to wins…

My take is recruiting is important but it's not interesting
Higher rated recruits are, in fact, much more likely to do well (though even five stars are a crapshot, which says more about ‘college athletics are played mostly by guys between 18 and 23’ than anything else). But I’m not going to get invested in a kid before he has meaningful playing time wearing Orange.
Having said that, I still voted for the ‘We still need a lot of improvement – too many 2 stars’ option. It’s better than last year, but still not good.
I agree.. somewhat
I think Alec Lemon and Van Chew were 2 stars and Marcus Sales was a 4 star. So they arent an exact science. But on the other hand Florida and Alabama and USC always get those 5 star players.. and its no coincidence that they always have the top teams in the country
The Post Standard reporting Marcus Sales will be back
hopefully, he is the deep threat we need while some of the other guys warm up more to the task. He can at least stretch the field for us at a minimum to give us more options down the field in the passing game!
Agree with this
Obviously we will never reach the level of Alabama/Florida/USC as far as recruiting goes. Being in the north east with substandard facilities will prevent us from bringing in even half the class that these schools bring in. However, we still missed out on high quality New York kids that we MUST start reeling in. If we were able to reel in a Jarron Jones or Chad Kelly, that would make me feel a TON better. Add 1 or 2 top NY kids on top of this class and I’d definitely be pleased

We need to get New Jersey back
Coach P let Rutgers up off the mat. Now we are the ones getting killed down there.

Agreed
More talent in Jersey then in New York, so i’d defintiely like to get that pipeline back. Anyone know if there are any local kids in NY who are blowing up highschool football? I know NSD was just yesterday, but i’m wondering who are the upstate stars SU should be looking at for next year. Anyone tapped into upstate new york highschool football?

I feel very strongly that Marrone will get there
The ACC move I dont think will be as big a factor for NE recruits, but I think getting in much better facilities than the high school ones we have now, and also a better track record will do wonders for starting to reel in those kids, or at least make them very seriously consider Syracuse. Some kids will always want to go to the SEC, or play in the south, or get away from home, so Doug and Co wont always be in control on LOI day, but Id like to see them choosing between coming to SU upstate, or going to the SEC as opposed to choosing between us, Akron or Bowling Green.
Don't underestimate performance
Hopefully in the next few years, we can consistently start making bowl games, ideally a BCS one. That gets you national exposure and allows the bright parts of the program to shine. Think about it: what did everyone talk about last year during the Pinstripe Bowl? Marrone’s history as a NYC guy, his loyalty, family values stuff, blah blah. What happens? In consecutive years we land high-profile NYC players (Reddish, Morgan). I guarantee you Morgan watched the Pinstripe Bowl last year and that affected his decision.
Then all you need is that one big name, ideally a QB, that decides to take the leap. Once you get one big name and he’s successful, you start reeling in big names from that area. Look at what Carmelo did for Philly baskeball – no coincidence that Scoop, Dion, etc all were in high school while Cuse was led by Melo.
Carmelo
was from Baltimore. Hak was from Philly.
