Scheduling Pod

Being a Syracuse fan and local in the Temple area I noticed something interesting about a scheduling pod that 5 schools seem to have set up. Syracuse, Temple, Detroit, Canisus and Alcorn State all play each other. It is essentially a mini league. Syracuse and Temple get all home games with their match at a neutral location. The other 3 teams each get one home game and three road games. I'm wondering if this was done as some type of RPI manipulation or somehow gets the Gotham Classic to count as a tournament or something along those lines.
