Now that the 2012 regular season is in the books, anyone who's an SU Football fan has a had a coulda-shoulda-woulda moment or two. You know, like how we SHOULDA beaten Rutgers if...and if Brandon Reddish takes that pick-six we COULDA beaten Cincy...and if we manage to win either of those two games we WOULDA been outright BE champs headed to Sugar Bowl instead of UL...and so it goes. Now that's out of my system, I can get past the thought of "What if the 2012 team had the 2010 defense?" Or the inverse, what if the 2010 team were coupled with the 2012 offense? How many games would they have won vs their respective schedules?
Honestly, with as close as every game was in 2012 add in a top-10 defense like the 2010 squad had, isn't a perfect 12-0 doesn't sound that crazy. Heck, I'd say it's even reasonable. Now a perfect record alone may not have landed us in a title game this year or in 2010, but it certainly gets us into the discussion.
Obviously, it the dynamics of an undefeated season are different than either the 2010 or 2012 seasons played out. This also assumes the presence of a special teams unit that at least does its job well more often than not (and doesn't include anyone that may or may not be named Ritchy Dene). But it can't be ingnored that just two seasons ago, we had one of the best defenses in the country, period. And this year, we've had one of the most productive offenses in SU history. Couldn't it be assumed that eventually, if not even immenently (within the next 5 years or so), we get the best of both worlds and put together a dream season? Even more, with the creation of a playoff it wouldn't require an undefeated record, which could open the door for a lot of teams. In that scenario could easily see an ACC Champ making a run at a title game in the near future. Why not us?
I'm not predicting this to happen. College football is unpredictable by it's very nature. Just last year if you mentioned Ryan Nassib as a possible 1st day (if not 1st round) draft pick, you'd probably have gotten yourself laughed out of every sports bar in America. Maybe the time is right to start dreaming big.
In the meantime, lets kick some WVU ass and hope DG can figure a way to get $cott $hafer from taking anymore interview$. GO ORANGE.
