So I won't call this a "rare nonconference road game for Syracuse" because A) The Troy Nunes guys would definitely make fun of me and B) at this point, rare is the elite program that goes on the road all that often anyway. Besides, Syracuse already played San Diego State in San Diego -- albeit on a wind-lapped aircraft carrier, which was hardly a home game for the Aztecs.
There’s no obvious solution if Marrone leaves. Dig a little deeper though, and an intriguing candidate emerges. He’s actually the perfect man for the job. Here’s his resume. Who owns the resume? Disgraced former Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel, a dream candidate for the Orange if Marrone bolts for the NFL.
For the eighth time in the past nine years and the 21st time since the inception of the award in 1981, the Syracuse University football team is a recipient of the American Football Coaches Association Academic Achievement Honorable Mention Award. The Orange is one of 47 institutions that graduated 75 percent of more of their football student-athletes.
Judging by record and BCS standings alone the Orange appears headed back to the Pinstripe for the second time in three seasons, although if UConn defeats Cincinnati on Saturday the Orange may surpass the Bearcats in that department. It is a moot point anyway, as the non-BCS bowls are not obligated to use those standings when extending invitations. Here are several reasons SU could move up in the pecking order:
Michael Gbinije, the Syracuse University sophomore who transferred last spring from Duke, has agreed to share with Syracuse basketball fans what it's like to redshirt for a season.
"I think they’ll just try to make the game a little erratic, try to force turnovers," Carter-Williams said. "They’ll try to force us to turn the ball over and get easy lay-ups and to speed the game up a little bit because they know they’ll be going against the (SU) zone. I just have to make the right decisions, make the right play, don’t try to force anything. And then, just stay relaxed. They’re trying to speed me up."
The Orange men's basketball team has a busy week ahead of them, starting with a road trip to Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks. After that SU heads back home for three games in six days at the Dome. Michael Carter-Williams has been running the point efficiently so far this young season, tallying 33 assists in his last 3 games.
What’s with all hoopla surrounding SU’s candidacy for all these second- and third-tier bowl games? I don’t get it. For the serious football fan, what’s to get excited about?
"He's a do-it-all guard," Fair said. "He can shoot. He can score. He's the kind of player where if there's a last-second shot, they'd go to him."
Mike Waters, basketball writer for The Post-Standard, on Friday morning talked with Gomez & Dave of Syracuse radio station TK99 about the Syracuse Orange basketball team.
Razorback fans are pumped for tonight’s game. Check out the official "white out" shirt the school is giving away.
Overall, the Razorbacks do not shoot the ball well from behind the 3-point line (27.8-percent), which could be a problem against the Orange's patented 2-3 zone defense.
The Boston Celtics announced today that they have recalled forward Kris Joseph from their NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
Three men who accused fired Syracuse University coach Bernie Fine of child molesting were "highly credible," Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said this week following his department’s year-long investigation.
