Before the Media stuff gets started

With basketball on the very near horizon, I have an interesting thought that I have been tossing around my relatively empty head this summer. We are all painfully aware at how national sports media loves to blast Cuse hoops. I find this weird with the amount of Newhouse grads dominating many of the biggest sport related news outlets. After chewing on my bitterness for the lack of positive attention Syracuse gets, I concluded that any attention is better than nothing. The more the name is heard, good or bad, the more it helps. Unless mentioning ex assistant coaches, no publicity is bad publicity. I was satisfied with my conclusion.......

Then I watched as top recruit after top recruit kept the Orange in the running for commitment. It was down to us, or a Calipari one and done for the top recruit in the nation last year. ya ya Georgetown...please. At first I figured it was the recent stay near the top mixed with frequent name drops on SC. But surely these top 30 players had heard about our tragic zone right? They know they won't play right? C'mon our ancient, crotchety head coach can't even figure out how to start his best player. no? So why would we still be there. Of course Hopkins plays a huge role that can't be overlooked, but he's been around for years and this recruiting success has been fairly recent.

So why? After muttering reasons to myself every morning over my hash and eggs I struck a brilliant thought. Brilliant by my standards of course. Maybe the negative spin that the media gives SU isn't so negative at all. Look at last year's biggest narrative. "Syracuse has no go to guy".

Maybe that isn't such an insult. Say I'm the 25th biggest prospect in all the land. Any team would have me, I could call a school and say hey, I want in and boom, offer on the table (simplified of course). I keep hearing that one of the top 20 schools in my lifetime needs a superstar. The role is available. Dougy G told me so, Bob Knight told me so. They even told me that both Duke and UNC are complete teams that need nothing. They told me no boy or man could fill Anthony Davis's shoes. But those Orange...all they need is the next Carmelo, that guy with the massive contract and a whole team to his very own in New York City of all places. That could just be the place for me, the teams star, big man on campus, a chance at the final 4 and the team with last year's number 4 draft pick.

Maybe I'm totally loony. Maybe I have thought about this too much, or maybe, just maybe. The negative things we hear over and over aren't so bad. Heck, maybe it's the loyal fan base/ grads in the media pulling some super subliminal advertising.

Would love to hear your conspiracy theory too. Now I'm gonna go put on my tin foil hat and throw out my Iphone.
