Maybe I'm just from a different Football cut, but I hate kicking the field goal inside the 10 yard line on 4th and anything on the first drive of the game(unless you are down 3-0). Maybe it is just years of watching SU settle for Fg's or maybe it is just seeing other teams spit in the face of old school wisdom and take the shot.
I had this discussion last night with my wife when SU kicked the FG, I yelled "go" and she said "take the points"(she is an LSU grad/Fan, so no ties to SU or the history)
Brings me back to my thinking, and someone maybe able to talk me off the cliff, but here we go. First, when was the last time a game ended 3-0, a long time so you are not winning the game on the first drive. Second, a touchdown is more than twice as valuable as the field goal so is it not worth the extra effort earlier in the game, since you will have time to make up the loss of 3 points if you don't make it. Third, you don't make it, the other team has to start out from the 5 or so, sets up a possible Safety op. or 3 and out and you get the ball back with amazing field position. Fourth the team drives 95 yards and scores the TD, still a one TD possession game either way. Fifth, other team scores a FG, TD still takes the lead and longer FG ties it. Sixth, the team mentality changes in the redzone, no more well we got points attitude, now it becomes we need to score a TD or we are giving the ball back. I could go deeper but you get the drift.
Look forward to seeing where everyone else stands on this question.
