KrisJo and his handle ... or lack thereof
What is up with Kris lately? Is he trying to show off a skill set for the NBA (that he doesn't have)?
He has several times in the last couple games looked like he was trying to set up a crossover move and he loses the handle. It isn't pretty. There is no doubt he can put it on the floor and go to the rim, but like a lot of forwards he is best with one or two bounces and then an explosion to the basket. Handling the ball on the perimeter, with both hands no less, is not his thing.
Heck, even for guards the days of a lot of over dribbling are over. The other players are too good unless you are an elite ball handler.
KrisJo's over dribbling, Dion's jumpshot, and Keita's hands of stone .... all problems it would be good to try and fix before March.

Or
ALWAYS driving right, even if hes driving at 5 defenders, STILL GOING RIGHT.
Today
is probably not the day to discuss this since he bailed the Cuse out yesterday. That 3 point play (driving to the hoop, mind you) and subsequent rebound putback late in the game has totally gotten lost with all this goaltending nonsense. The fact he didn’t touch the ball at all on the last possession and Waiters shot a ridiculously fade away is mind boggling.
I have no issue with Joseph putting the ball on the deck. He’s going to lose the handle once in a while (he is 6’7) and in 2 of the last 4 games he had zero TO’s.
I have no problem with him putting it on the deck either
He’s not going to look like a PG, but he’s capable.
My bigger issue is that he doesn’t seem to have a strong feel for contact. He draws too many charges and not enough fouls. He also frequently gets in traffic draws some minor contact that prevents him from hitting his shot, but also fails to get a call.
I really feel like the difficulty he has finishing off drives is what keeps him from being a 20+ point threat each night, and taking over. I can’t count the number of games where it looks like he’s getting hot, hits a few shots, then puts the ball on the deck, picks up a charge, then the next time he takes it too easy, gets pushed around, misses a shot without getting the call and he’s out of his game offensively for the next 3-4 minutes.
That
I definitely agree with. Once he gets in the lane his decision making is below average. If he added a jump stop to his game, I don’t kno, two years ago, he would be unstoppable. I totally agree on the contact thing too.
Sorta agree
I feel like Joseph thinks about what he is going to do in advance – regardless of the defense. If he decides he’s going to drive right, and spin to his left, hes going to do it, even if the original move left the defender in the dust.
Honestly though
I trust Josephs dribble more then I trust Keita to catch the ball.
Kris Joseph
might be a poor man’s Damone Brown/D.Nichols/Todd Burgan?
With that said, I do like him… good, smart kid who shows flashes of “awesomeness”.

A rich man's perhaps
K Jo is better than all three of those players. All three of those guys played on generally less talented teams, yet K Jo outperforms them all statistically. If he were on teams with them, he would be the star, putting up 20 points.
We win and are a top team because he doesn’t need to put up 20 a night. He doesn’t have the game of a go-to player, he has to potential but its appearing that he simply isn’t going to shape into that. Regardless, he remains what is probably that most talented role player in the history of the Orange, and when he plays his game, he is a matchup nightmare that can exploit weaknesses on any team, even Kentucky and Ohio St.
I respectfully disagree...
“All three of those guys played on generally less talented teams, yet K Jo outperforms them all statistically”
Burgan (who I wasn’t a huge fan of, statistically better than KJo, not even close) also went to a Final 4- I doubt KJo would be putting up 20 with Wallace, Otis Hill, Jason Cipolla, and Janulius on the team…
Brown played in the NBA for 5 years-had a really good one year here
Nichols-I’ll give you, KJo is better than him
Also, can a 2 year starter be considered a “role player”? If that’s the case, they’re all role players…
CJ Fair is our role player of the decade.
I do agree that he is the guy on our team that other teams key on and consider our biggest threat. Believe me, I love KrisJo and what he brings to the team but I don’t think he is any better than Damone Brown or Todd Burgan. I guess he reminds me a lot of the kid who transferred here from Illinois… Ryan Blackwell.

Here is a comparison of their Sr and Jr seasons
My case for this being a better overall team than those is more based on SU being pretty consistently in the top 5 or 10 the last 3 years.
Our NCAA seeds for instance:
2012: we’ve been ranked top 5 the whole season
2011: 3 seed
2010: 1 seed
2009: 3 seed
Damone Brown’s Jr&Sr. years
2001: 5 seed
2000: 4 seed
Todd Burgan’s Jr.&Sr. years
1998: 5th Seed
1997: NIT
KJo’s stats are very similar to the other two, and through their Jr. years I think KJo definitely has the better stats. He’s regressed this year, but that is b/c he plays fewer minutes than the other two did, and has not been a focal point.
That 1996 team was Burgan’s sophmore year. The better comparison is his senior year with Janulius as a SR, Ovcina as a JR, and So. Blackwell/Etan Thomas putting up 12/11ppg against Burgan’s 17ppg. Remember the John Wallace we remember was the 1996 John Wallace, the other three years he was good, but not a game changer.
The 2001 Brown team was Brown and Griffin as Srs, Shumpert as a Jr., and Deshaun Williams putting up 12ppg against Brown’s 16.
These guys certainly played around some great SU players, but the freshman and sophmore versions of those players. Or were with SU greats when they were freshman/sophmore role players.
I think KJo on the Burgan or Brown Senior teams puts up 20 a game and those SU teams finish with similar records at similar NCAA seeding.
I would rather he
drive to the basket than shoot 3 point shots.
have wanted him iso'd on the block for years
saw it a little last game. probably because of our lack of post guys.
part damage control but i also thought he could do some work down there.
That's not a bad idea
But more of a mid-post catch rather than the low block. That way he can turn, face and go either way to the rim.
