Otto The Orange: New And Improved

As you know, a brand new Otto The Orange premiered Saturday during the Syracuse Orange's game against the West Virginia Mountaineers.

You might remember we got a first look at the design a few months back and it looks like Otto stayed pretty true to that look.

Here's some photos sent over by Julie Walas, Coach of the SU Otto Mascot team.

Just me, or did he lose some character in the face? Only improvement I personally see is he’s cleaner. And the back looks better.

The old Otto

smelled like a discarded hockey bag left in the trunk of a car in 110 degree weather. Hopefully, if nothing else, new Otto gets the FABreeze every once in a while.

Is it just me or does new Otto look like he had a stroke? Left side of the face looks a little droopy.

by cuse03 on Jan 29, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Now that you mention it, his left eye does look lower.

I do like the block S on the hat. I’m not a big block S fan, but if we have to have it, it might as well be on Otto.

hate the nike swoosh

i’m fine with all the funky basketball uniforms, but no nike logo messing with my mascot, please.

what other school mascot has corporate branding on it? while part of me thinks that might be kind of cool to have otto sporting the most recognizable and popular sports equipment company in the world, i feel dirty about a corporation representing itself in the manifestation of my alma mater.

Many schools outfitted by Nike...

have their mascots wearing jerseys with the Swoosh on them. It’s hardly a new thing.

I’m not a big fan of it, but in the end, not a big deal.

by That Guy Mel on Jan 29, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, a lot of mascots do

UGA:

Mike the Tiger:

Brutus Buckeye always has Nike socks on (even as he gets attacked by the Ohio mascot, who’s also all logo’d up)

The Sun Devil

USF Bull

Goldy

Aubie

Temple Owl

BYU Cougar

Sebastian

And that’s after a pretty quick Google image search, I’m sure you could find a crapload of others.

by cuse2012 on Jan 29, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

That Brutus Buckeye pic....

is hilarious! Not only is he getting fucked up, but he’s sweating, too. A Michigan fan would love that picture.

It's different

if the mascot is wearing the jersey of the team and the logo is just where it always is. (or where it always is on the socks etc.) But on Otto it seems too prominent and purposeful.

by 49982072 on Jan 29, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Totally not the same thing.

Those other mascots are all wearing the same jersey that the players wear, so if the school’s jersey has a logo, it’s on the mascot. But Otto’s hat is only worn by the baseball and softball team, if at all.

Other schools you pictured: brand logo on jersey; mascot wears jersey
Cuse: brand logo on mascot

To me, there is a huge difference.

by PoorSports on Jan 29, 2012 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Teams have dog sized uniforms?

by fatmofo55 on Jan 29, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

The Georgia mascot has his own jersey

It isn’t remotely close to the jerseys their team wears. And the OSU mascot pretty blatantly has his pants and sleeves rolled up to show the Nike logo in 4 different places.

And I don’t see the huge difference- the mascots are always either wearing a football jersey or a basketball jersey. You won’t see them without a logo on, and those jerseys are specially made for the mascots.

Do I like the Nike logo on the hat? No. But to act like we’re the only team that has become Nike’s corporate whore is a complete joke.

by cuse2012 on Jan 29, 2012 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

our mascot does not wear a jersey

neither do notre dame, stanford, florida state, usc just to name a few off the top of my head.

none of those have logos on them. no nike spear for fl st. no logo on the leprechaun vest. that is what kind of mascots i am compaing otto to.

this isn’t going to keep me up at night or make me feel any differently about syracuse, but otto has a huge nike swoosh on his hat, and no other team has as noticable a corpoorate logo on their mascot, regardles of where/how it appears.

by PoorSports on Jan 29, 2012 8:28 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Besides Stanford, all of those have actual people mascots with inexpensive costumes

The Ohio State mascot is a much better comparison, and he has Nike logos all over him without wearing a jersey. His pants and sleeves aren’t rolled up just for the hell of it. The Georgia Bulldog has his own shirt that isn’t a jersey, he has a Nike logo on it. This is the nature of college sports today, like it or not. It isn’t only Syracuse. Want to make a bet the next time UF or Oregon need new mascot costumes a Nike logo is slapped on it?

by cuse2012 on Jan 29, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair

take a look at the first photo after the jump. Anyone looking at Otto from…well, person level doesn’t see the Nike Logo. Now, obviously it will still be seen by most camera shots/people in the upper deck, and various other situations, but it could always be worse. They could have given him a swoosh for a mouth…

Agreed! With the jerseys, I assume that the approach Nike/UA and say “Hey, can you make us an extra sized jersey for our mascot?” Otto just has a Nike logo slapped on his costume, which I assume was not made by Nike, at all.

by Jeepers44 on Jan 29, 2012 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

We also don't have a baseball team

FYI. Doesn’t really change your point though.

by OrangeChris on Jan 29, 2012 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

He's ok

Totally agree the Nike logo should be removed—-and I’m not loving the dark blue arms. And I do miss the tongue. But I still hate him less than I thought I would.

by MrsOtto1313 on Jan 29, 2012 11:50 AM EST reply actions

its the placement of the swoosh

like, if it was a tiny one on the back of the hat, like where a nik swoosh would be on a nike hat, i’d be totally ok with it. now it looks like some bird crapped on his hat
.

I’m good with it except I think the hands should still be white.

My guess.

The actual Otto logo has blue hands and arms. Guess they were trying to match that. I like the new Otto. Much needed upgrade. Nike logo is way too big and in an odd spot but whatever. Old Otto was looking rough. Hopefully this one holds up well.

Go Orange!

by MBorkowski on Jan 29, 2012 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

White shows dirt

My thought is that the blue gloves will buy some time before the next costume must be made. Think of that when you high five Otto.

Oh thank gosh the hat is on straight!

I was worried about that… I also like the blue arms better, although do miss the white gloves. I’m a huge fan of the block “S” so seeing it on Otto is overdue IMO. Really not fussed with the Nike swoosh one way or the other. Kind of miss the tongue though. Overall a very nice upgrade!

I thought our mascot was an orange...

…but obviously it’s a pear. Oranges are round.

At least this new one is not a deflated pear.

by soupcan11 on Jan 29, 2012 3:03 PM EST reply actions

Thought he looks pear-shaped, too.

That 2nd picture..

is that big white box his unveiling, or something else?

Go Cuse!

by nymetsfan1226 on Jan 29, 2012 3:12 PM EST reply actions

The box said “Caution: Radioactive” or something along those lines and then Ottos busted out after a promo video about how he was created by Dr. Manhattan in some super-sciency labs or something.

Basically, our mascot is a super-weapon and HE WILL KILL YOU

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

No need for the change, just replace the old smelly one with a new one that looks the same. Its called tradition.

Nike logo creep aside

I thought they did a pretty good job of updating the costume. A lot cleaner and I think Otto comes off a bit more vibrant than before

Logo is so huge

It doesn’t even look like a Nike logo. Looks like a crescent.

by acurrier on Jan 30, 2012 1:06 AM EST reply actions

How does the person see out?

In the old Otto, there was a spot for the person wearing the outfit to see out of the hat. In this one, I can’t tell where the wearer gets their vision. Anyone know?

by acurrier on Jan 30, 2012 2:19 AM EST reply actions

Lost his personality

I like the S on the hat and Syracuse on his back but agree that his gloves/hands should still be white. I also think he’s lost some of his personality, I liked his toungue sticking out. Now he kinda gives me the Burger King King “static expression” creeps

by sportzbelle on Jan 30, 2012 9:25 AM EST reply actions

My issues

Old Otto had a tongue gave him character.

Need white gloves. Blue looks weird.

Syracuse on the back is a patch and the patch has a different shade of orange.

by KingOttoIII on Jan 30, 2012 10:01 AM EST reply actions

Oh and the Nike thing

Don’t mind it but put it on side of hat like real hats.

by KingOttoIII on Jan 30, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I’ve never seen a hat with a swoosh there. If you’re trying to make it look like a Nike hat, make it actually look like a Nike hat.

We need to scrap Otto and get a real mascot

Otto is improved, and the others are still better.

Syracuse should adopt the robin as its mascot!
