No. 3 Syracuse Orange (21-1) vs. West Virginia Mountaineers (15-6) GameThread

West Virginia Mountaineers at Syracuse Orange, Jan 28, 2012 1:00 PM EST

Fresh off a road trip that served up their first loss of the season, the No. 3 Syracuse Orange return home to take out their aggression on the West Virginia Mountaineers at 1:00 p.m. ET.

By all accounts, Fab Melo will not be in the line-up for the Orange, which means Rakeem Christmas and Baye Moussa Keita will need to step it up in the paint. It also means you can expect to see many more sets that include C.J. Fair at the 4-spot alongside Kris Joseph and the guard trio of Scoop Jardine, Dion Waiters and Brandon Triche.

Kevin Jones will the No. 1 aggressor on West Virginia's side. He leads the Big East in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.0 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Senior Darryl "Truck" Bryant averages 17.4 points per game and is a deep-ball threat but has been in a major slump. Junior Dennis Kilicli is contributing 10.8 points per game as well to round of their top three scorers.

Syracuse leads the all-time series 33-16, has won the last four meetings and 15 of the last 18 going all the way back to 1998-99.

The game will be televised on ESPNU or you can watch it on ESPN3.com here.

Fun Fact while we watch this game

Ball State’s nickname used to be “Cardinal” just like Stanford, but was later changed to Cardinals due to confusion.

Whoops, did I say “fun” fact? Sorry about that.

Should that be a goaltend? Probably, but it isn’t like WV had plenty of gifts in that game. Plus they had plenty of time to make a game winning play and couldn’t. And if they count the goaltend, we have plenty of time to win it in regulation or OT. So no, it’s not we “shoulda lost”.

by DMF on Jan 28, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

I want to see it again.

I admit that my judgement may have been clouded by the large amount of adult beverages I had ( have) consumed but I thought for a second that Baye got the ball with his finger tips on, on the way up, before it hit the glass.

Plus West Virginia fans need to just chill out. They have a 6-9, 260 pound center that relies on a hook shot. That tells you all you need to know. West Virginia is always two players shy of being a good team. They are mediocre and need to learn to live with it. They played well. We played like shit. We won. That says a lot.

by NoXCUSE99 on Jan 28, 2012 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

To have more than enough time to do something with that matchup down low

And NOT exploit it is what WV fans should be mad at. Call out Huggins and Jones for coming out of a TO and calling what is probably the worst play in that scenario.

by cuse2012 on Jan 28, 2012 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, you had too many adult beverages

It was definitely a goaltend. It hit the backboard, then he tipped it, then it hit the corner of the rim, and then it came off. So it hit 3 things in rapid succession and, admittedly, it was tough to be sure at first glance. I actually don’t fault the refs for missing this but, if I was a WVU fan, I would fault the system for not being able to review it.

I would love WVU

In the ACC as well, unfortunately it will never happen. A lot of quality, historical rivalry games are gone for good. The Cuse WVU game, the backyard brawl may go as well, and we already lost the VT rivalry to the ACC.

by bennywvu on Jan 28, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

ND is the one school

with the academic cache to offset whatever WVU’s academic rankings are. If ND ever said… “Fine, we’ll join the ACC, but WVU comes with us,” then it will happen.

I'd love to keep playing WV

But those academics (or the lack thereof) are NEVER getting WVU into a conference like the Big Ten or ACC. They probably end up as nomads in unstable, sub-par conferences a-la TCU for a long, long time.

I don't think we are a top 15 team without Fab Melo

We are atrocious at three-point shooting and rebounding.

At this point, I am not sure I want Southerland to ever shoot one again. Just stick to December, kid.

by ezcuse on Jan 28, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

We're not a top 20 without him

I think you’re kidding yourself if you say that Cuse has looked any better than ‘average’ in the last 3 games without him. Now part of that may just be coicidence but his threat on D changes the others teams offense significantly. If he is out the rest of the year I’d say we’re not really favorites in much

by W.A.Wilson on Jan 28, 2012 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Amazingly

We miss him on offense more than defense. Never thought I would say that.

Not having the pick and roll with Scoop hurts everyone’s game. That two-man game seems to open things up for everyone.

Now… if we had the ability to shoot more than 20% from 3-point range OR rebound even competently, we’d have looked a lot better in the ND game and today. But these two trends seem to be fact rather than anomaly.

by ezcuse on Jan 28, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

The rebounding yes, but I think we’re a better three point team than we’ve shown lately. KJo and Southie especially seem to have lost any three point touch.

Never thought I'd be talking about mssing fab on offense either

Who cares?

Elite schools do not apologize for their wins. If Syracuse ever wants to be elite, we need to stop caring when ESPN criticizes us or some loser on Yahoo says mean things about us after a win.

Guess what? If that non-call was made in a Penn State-Nebraska or Boston College-Georgia Tech game it would be news. The refs just cannot miss a call like that.

But just like WVU fans need to let it go, Syracuse fans need to own the win without caring what stranger babble about on some uber-message board..

by pegs on Jan 28, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

The best comment I have ever heard...

is whomever said that officiating is almost always much better when you do not have a stake in the outcome of the game.

Good teams overcome the officiating errors that are inevitable in every game. It is not less offensive to me when this board whines about the officials, than it is West Virginia fans complaining out the non-call.

Very rarely will a game go by without each team getting screwed a handful of times. WVU had one bad non-call, but got to benefit from absurd foul calls on Keita and Christmas.

by ezcuse on Jan 28, 2012 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

When did Southie ever have it?

I am still waiting for this 3-point “specialist” to do something other than clank them.

I am fine with the way the rest of his game is developing. Converting around the basket. Playing some good D. Needs to work on rebounding, but who doesn’t? At least he is in there trying. And he has a decent mid-range game.

Just nothing from 3-point range. Might as well be a turnover when he lights it up.

http://atlanticcoastconfidential.com/

by ezcuse on Jan 28, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Not a specialist

That’s just commentators being dumb…but going into this game he was shooting 35.7% from three this year so he hasn’t been bad by any means. I don’t mind him shooting them he’s just going through a cold streak right now.

by JB44ever on Jan 28, 2012 6:20 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I think the refs did WVU a favor by blowing that call

WVU got a chance to win at the buzzer instead of lose at it since there would’ve been 9 sec. left.

by jcase0 on Jan 28, 2012 3:38 PM EST reply actions

I don't know that they did them a favor, per se

but WVU still had a chance. And it kept Cuse from getting the last possession of the game with 9 sec to go.

I don’t really understand why Keita bothered passing it to a tightly covered KrisJo there? Just hold the ball with all your might! If you need to, call a TO.

Honestly the Officiating wasn't bad.

There were a few bad calls for each side. The 5th foul on Christmas was pretty lame, and the goaltending was a definite miss. But calls at the end of the game get played up so much.

by fatmofo55 on Jan 28, 2012 3:46 PM EST reply actions

I was thinking the refs really blew it

Usually the calls go against SU. But then I realized, the BE hates WV more than Syracuse. In the end, you can whine and cry about every call and end up with the same score. Same with the call against Scoop in the tourney last year. Trolling message boards instead of burning couches is funny though.

by orangetundra on Jan 28, 2012 3:58 PM EST reply actions

God damn Mounties have gotten whiny

Could that have been a goaltend? Sure, but it could also go the other way. Is that the only bad call in the game? F*ck no, and PLENTY went your way. If they called that a goaltend, we’d have plenty of time to make a game winning play. Since they didn’t you had plenty of time to make a play, and you couldn’t. Instead, your Big East POY completely disappeared down the stretch in a crucial game. LOL. Sorry, but you didn’t lose the game on that. Not one bit.

Have they always been so bitchy? After that football game where they lost by what, 3 touchdowns, back in the fall they pretty much blamed it on reffing.

But I guess when they get an education in Morgantown you can’t expect intelligence from them.

22-1.

JB screwed the pooch in the final minutes

I’m a huge Jimmy fan and usually defend him ( I think the zone is the BEST defense in college hoops for many reasons). But not to have Scoop in late, in a close game, when Scoop has been playing great ball in BE play, is just dumb. Plus, its not like Dion has been lighting it up lately.

by nymetsfan1226 on Jan 28, 2012 5:17 PM EST reply actions

How is it they "should've won"?

Has everyone forgotten math? If they call it, then MAYBE the game only gets to OT.

by cuse2012 on Jan 28, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt Boeheim said that

Unless he is studying the same West Virginia math that put Fab on the bench. 61 plus 2 is usually not 64. 9 seconds, the ball and 2 (or 3) timeouts. Get over it already.

But, the officiating is really bad in college basketball. Has been that way for 3 or 4 years, but seems to not ever improve. Remember the BE tourney with St. John’s? Somebody needs to do something about that. Plus, they should be able to review goal tending to at least determine if a player takes it off the glass. Reviews in college basketball are completely worthless since you can’t even use it on the obvious crap but can use it to determine a player’s intention when throwing an elbow.

by orangetundra on Jan 28, 2012 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, it was a bad call

It was clearly goaltending with 12 seconds left but West Virginia did have a great chance to still win the game. If they had hit the 3 pointer at the buzzer,it would’ve been Syracuse screwed by a call that went in their favor since they would’ve been denied a chance to win the game in the last 10 seconds. Would ESPN be going as crazy if it had worked out that way? (ESPN would call it poetic justice even though Syracuse is not to blame) Would we all be complaining here about a bad call that actually went in our favor?

by kd bart on Jan 28, 2012 5:24 PM EST reply actions

Then the story would've been about how we had a chance to stop it and didn't

But, of course, since it went there way, we won’t talk about how they had chances to win/tie and didn’t.

I’m not sure if it’ll be enough to boost them into the tourney…they’re going to need to keep doing this the rest of the year.

What is even more awesome is that we’re about to be virtually 2 games up on everyone else again (tiebreaker over Marquette).

Ashton Gibbs has been freed up of having to try to be a PG (something that he is not) and can just shoot the ball (something he does great).

by cuse2012 on Jan 28, 2012 6:12 PM EST reply actions

While it was clearly a goal tend

I can see how the refs missed it. He put the ball up very soft off the glass. It didn’t appear to change direction much which is how, I assume, they tell if the ball hit glass or not.

Also, it wouldn’t surprise me if Boeheim told Huggins he should have won. When one team outrebounds another 36-20, you absolutely should win. I don’t think it has to do with the call.

by Mike I. on Jan 28, 2012 6:19 PM EST reply actions

Digger going on and on about the call costing the WVA the game

without bringing up:

A) It would’ve only tied the game
B) There still would’ve been 10 seconds left in the game and Syracuse would’ve had the ball with multiple timeouts and a chance to win.
C) WVU got the ball back with 6 seconds left on the sideline by their basket after a Syracuse out of bounds call off of the rebound and had an excellent shot to win the game at the buzzer.

Yes, it was a bad call but WVA was given more than an adequate chance to win or at least tie the game in the last 6 seconds. It’s not like they were completely denied an opportunity. In fact, if they’d hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer, the bad call would’ve worked out for their benefit.

Watching the Arizona/Washington game

Last play of the first half, Arizona player slams home the ball on a play where the ball is clearly still above the hoop in the cylinder when he touches it but no one calls it and they count the two for Arizona. So if Arizona ends up winning by 1 or 2 does ESPN make as big a stink about it?
