The Fab Melo News Update Apocalypse
Fab Melo is currently not playing basketball for the Syracuse Orange, no one is telling us exactly why and when he'll play again and everyone is freaking the F out.
As one of those freaking out, you probably know all of this already.
We've seen the Orange win without Fab but it wasn't pretty. And we know from the last two games that they are a better team with Melo than without. I don't know if it's on the same level as losing Arinze Onuaku a few years back, but it might end up being a critical loss if we can't get him back soon...or ever.
So, what do we know?
While SU has not and cannot come out and say it, we can all be reasonably sure it's an academic issue. I think we're past squabbling over that at this point.
If that is the case, it's kinda silly to blame any academic advisor. Fab isn't exactly taking Pre-Med classes here. He has to hold up his end of the bargain.
Sources told Donna Ditota on Wednesday that it could "be a while" before those academic issues are resolved. With a game this Saturday against the West Virginia Mountaineers, that's not good.
Fab himself is keeping a low profile, emerging every few days on Twitter to say something extremely vague.
Rumors are swirling about appeals and multiple classes and a whole lot more. Right now, since no one official or journalism-y has come out and confirmed any of it, there's no point in assuming any or all of it is totally true. Remember, there was a 12 hours period where the point-shaving rumor sounded pretty legit last year (oddly-enough around this same time).
At the end of the day, all we can do is speculate until we know for sure. And that's bound to get us into trouble sooner or later...

Not to spread gasoline on the fire, but...
I heard from a reliable source, Fab isn’t allowed to play until he trims the Faux-Hawk. It rubs Boeheim the wrong way. Unfortunately, much like Sampson, the bigger and weirder looking his Faux-Hawk is, the more Brazilian Swag Fab possesses.

I actually blamed myself for the ND loss
I got my haircut earlier that day. Then SU lost and the Niners lost the next day.
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip
I am freaking the F out!
I am also kinda freaking the F out that I’m freaking the F out because three months ago, I didn’t even care if Fab returned to the team. Why, Fab, WHY?!?
Some positivity
West Virginia just got destroyed by St. John’s. So, we might not have to worry about much for that particular game.
However, we need Fab to come back. Please.
WVU
is much much better than they played in that game. KenPom had them at #22 (and they were robbed of being in the polls) before that game. They dropped 10 spots in KenPom’s poll after the loss, but I still wouldn’t brush them off like that; this could be a tough game.
This is for certain
Fab must be eligible to play under NCAA guidelines, because if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be allowed to practice. I had a friend on the lacrosse team who was academically ineligible and he couldn’t practice with the team. It is either a cheating situation (I don’t think it is because he would be academically ineligible) or it’s an SU/JB situation, which means Fab may have skipped a bunch of classes. No one has gone on the record saying anything, so who knows for certain? Fab’s tweet to Andy Katz about everyone liking a movie with a good ending makes it seem that this is a short term situation. My guess is that he won’t play this week, but might be back for St. John’s. He may have failed to turn in a paper leading to an incomplete in a class, and he had to complete the paper and get a passing grade on it in order to be able to travel and play with the team. That isn’t an academic adviser’s fault. While they help the kids, they can’t write papers for them. I used to study with one, primarily because she had access to the athletic department’s test file, which is unmatched at SU. I’m still freaking the F out until I see Fab back in #51 dominating the paint. He’s the difference between One Shining Moment and another Orange free Final Four. Baye is a career backup who would’ve been redshirted this year had DaShonte Riley not transferred. He’s not, nor will he ever be, strong enough to control the low post. We can only hope that Rakeem keeps developing quickly and KrisJo starts hitting more threes and Dion gets out of the funk he’s been in for the past week.
Is he still practicing?
And if so, is he there as a really big, warm body or are they working him with the main rotation? If they are still running stuff with him, that is a good sign they think he is coming back. If he is just kind of out there, not doing anything productive, that is a sign they don’t think he is coming back but don’t want to kick him off the team.
Those bad feelings just get stronger everyday. I think the main question in almost every hypothetical situation is: Does anyone know Fab’s thoughts about going pro this year? Because if he has NBA on his mind, he probably isn’t going to do much to fix the situation. If he always planned to come back for a junior season, you have to believe he is working hard to finish this one.
Being this is Thursday, I doubt there is a 25% chance he will play Saturday. That 25% is really just Boeheim keeping quiet to make W Vir guess.
If he didn't play again this year, I don't think he'd head to the NBA
Still has too much to prove

Misleading Caption Is Misleading
I thought it was the news apocalypse, that he was ruled out for the year.
Haha so did I
My heart dropped when I read the headline
If he just gets back in time for Georgetown
I’ll be very happy.
If we lose to WV at home or St. John’s, it means we played so badly I’m not sure Fab could have helped us anyway.
i know for a fact what is going on but dont know what will happen
Someone who works at SU and is privileged to this info, has told me there is an investigation going on dealing with a cheating ring in one of his classes, and therefore his final was deemed invalid, they will make him retake the final and depending on what the investigation turns up he should be ok. What may take “awhile” is the investigation, therefor they cannot play him because if something turns up SU would have to forfeit all games he played in. This process could also be done before wvu game or next or awhile this is what is uncertain. From what I am hearing they dont believe melo was not involved in anything but he still has to pass that test and until the investigation is over they are keeping him out as a precaution.
Is this Mark Schwarz?
I’m just kidding, I hope your right

Forfeit
Why would SU have to forfeit games he was in after the fact. If the NCAA rules him eligible they won’t go back and take away games. That makes no sense. You can’t play an academically ineligible player under any circumstance. The NCAA clearinghouse will let you know well before that happens. This happens all the time.

This is an SU situation and it looks obvious.
Well if it was deemed he cheated during the first semester,
it would mean he was ineligible for the first semester.
See: Derek Rose at Memphis.
It was ruled he cheated on a test, and the whole season (in which they went 30-1 or whatever) was dumped.

Not exactly true
Rose’s SAT was invalidated by the SAT people a year after the 2008 final four. . Because of the that it made it seem like he didn’t take the SAT hence the vacated wins. All I’m saying is that SU wouldn’t have to forfeit games this season for Fab. Maybe down the road something would happen, but that Rose situation is a rare rare case.

Fab Melo appeal denied. Out vs West Virginia (Sat) & St. Johns next week. One last appeal effort tomorrow. Hearing not looking good.

I dont know is he is the most reliable source. or maybe hes the most reliable source. i have no clue at this point…
Cuse fan in ACC country.
Might be the most reliable
Because it could literally cost him the most money, and compared to ESPN he has journalistic credibility.
This is insane
Are we now to believe a bookie from Detroit has more info than the Post Standard, DO, and every Syracuse outlet? What the hell is going on up there? Anyone up there want to do some reporting?
Yeah
He claims to have broke the original suspension before everyone, so he might have some credibility here. The cheating ring theory is getting a lot of run, but still seems a bit out there. I guess someone has to make a decision because playing without Fab is bad enough. Not knowing what team you will have for March may be worse.

i heard, supposedly he had all of December to do a 6-page essay for a class and he didn’t do it all.
Paper
I heard it was for art class. It was supposed to discuss the difference between gray and platinum.

True Road Games, a six-page essay by Fab Melo
He bought into the media’s tired reporting, and realized he didn’t have enough to write about for six pages. Ha!

Someone posted yesterday that someone tweeted that she saw Fab Melo at Chipotle.
Do you STILL want him to come back?
More rumors and scuttlebutt
I’ll just wait until we have a resolution – and in the meantime, hope Rak Christmas becomes ready for prime time. We’re gonna need him.

The timing of the ineligibilty makes me think something's weird.
If Fab had failed a test, blew off a paper, or skipped a bunch of classes, they would have known about it in late December. I mean when football players don’t make the grades, they get suspended from their bowl game. Therefore, it naturally follows that Fab would have been suspended for the Seton Hall game or even Tulane if he was ineligible for the traditional reasons.
That’s why the cheating ring, invalidated test, etc. makes sense to me because he would have been eligible until the incomplete grade was entered last week. I just hope he wasn’t involved.

Who the heck knows?
It sucks, that’s for sure, but until we see something definitive, there’s no use in getting panties bunched. I’ve mentally prepared myself for life without him and clinging to the hope that Rak turned into a beast after his Cinci game.
I Heard...
Fab flunked geography. He thought Syracuse & New York City were the same place. He cited the basketball media as his sources.
Nothing Is Fool proof if you have the right fools.
Fab Melo
I don’t blam the education dept because its not their care other than getting the kid registered for class.
BUT, being that he is Brazillian (doesn’t speak good english or understand english as quickly) and that he is a scholorship athlete I have to holf someone responsible such as the Coach and his advisors, or he should have had a battle buddy like an Assistant Coach checking his grades and his progress weekly for concerns or tutoring…
I am assuming that this issue is on a larger scope and doesn’t just deal with him unless he cheated and was caught and there is an investigation on for that. Otherwise this must cover an entire class and therefore if found out he was involved with something, better to not play him than lose those games to forfeits…
Him practicing tells me there is an investigation that is unfounded at the moment but could be serious.
